Good Afternoon!

This morning we began by exploring our Touch and Feel baby animal cards.  We said the name of the animal on our card, felt the different textures of their fur and made the sound each animal makes.

We then headed into the kitchen to engage in building with loose parts-wooden rocks and color people.  We were busy stacking our rocks to make a rock tower and standing our people on top of our stack.

IMG_1543(4)IMG_1546(4)IMG_1549(3)IMG_1557(4)IMG_1566(3)

We then headed over to make our own unique music with a variety of musical instruments.

Good Afternoon!

We pulled out the tape measure this morning to get a gist of how tall members of PREK1 are! We compared the heights and tried to see if there was a peer that was the same height. We loved getting to explore the tape measure!

K.M.1: Make direct comparisons of the length, capacity, weight, and temperature of objects, and recognize which object is shorter, longer, taller, lighter, heavier, warmer, cooler, or holds more.

We were disappointed that we couldn’t go outside this morning on account of rain.  We decided to make the rainy weather feel more fun by created rain paintings!  We used an eye dropper to make “rain drops” on our paper.  We imagined it was a window and the drops were dripping down.  We tipped our paper to make our raindrops run down the paper.  Paige got so excited about her painting that she exclaimed “I just love this…I don’t know what to do with myself…I’m just so proud of this!”.  It was heart warming to see her so excited about her artwork!

We enjoyed some imaginative water play this morning as well.  Arthur and Ryan worked together to problem solve.  They wanted to find a way to pick up the water.  They looked at what they had, tried different things, and through trial and error, reached a solution.  They found that the puff balls worked like sponges and they could collect water by soaking them and squeezing the water into their bowl.  What a wonderful example of authentic learning, building creative problem solving and critical thinking skills through play!

PREK2: We have been making comparisons this week.  We have noticed heavy and light and small/medium/large.  Today we read “The Big Guy Took My Ball”.  We talked about the different size comparisons in the story.  At the end, we thought of something that seemed really big to us.

Good Afternoon!

We used unifix cubes to help us with sign in this morning. Each PREK1 group member came to sign in where they identified their pattern, counted how many cubes were in their pattern and answered a specific question such as, “Can you find a pattern that is longer/shorter than yours?”.

K.M.1: Make direct comparisons of the length, capacity, weight, and temperature of objects, and recognize which object is shorter, longer, taller, lighter, heavier, warmer, cooler, or holds more.

This morning we experimented by painting with small, medium, and large brushes in the art center.  We even tried binding ten small paintbrushes together to make a large one.  It made different marks and was fun to try.  We had several “fires”, “thunder storms”, and “rainbows” coming out of the art center this morning.

PREK2: During group today we read the story “I Want My Truck”.  At the end of the story, we tried to recall where the boy had looked for his truck.  We also had a spontaneous group discussion about things we lost.  We learned that friends had lost “a stuffy pumpkin that we found again at Target”, “a police car”, “a favorite silly shirt”, and “a kitty cat marker cap”.  It was all quite tragic though it sounds like several of the items ended up being found Smile.

Good afternoon!

Our friends engaged in a variety of activities this morning. We looked at the “Hop on Pop” board book, explored the stuffed animals and worked on our color matching skills with the pop-up people.

IMG_1489(4)IMG_1494(4)IMG_1510(3)

We then made our way into the kitchen to paint with brushes at the art easel. We painted with pastel colors and watched as they mixed together on our papers.

IMG_1499(3)IMG_1497(3)IMG_1501(4)IMG_1504(3)

We then headed outside to enjoy another warm and sunny morning. Our friends played in the sandbox, went down the slide, rode the teeter-totter with a friend and engaged with an airplane.

Good Afternoon!

Comparison words on are tap this week for our PREK1 group. Today for sign in, we compared three different fruits depending on their weight. Children were asked to identify the heaviest fruit and write their name under it. Children are comparing things all the time without every realizing it! Smile

K.M.1: Make direct comparisons of the length, capacity, weight, and temperature of objects, and recognize which object is shorter, longer, taller, lighter, heavier, warmer, cooler, or holds more.

These kids love snow…..so so much!  We were all happy to play in the snow all morning.  We made snow balls, ran through the snow, slid down the hill and even made a snowman, until we were exhausted and ready for lunch!

IMG_3258(6)IMG_3257(5)IMG_3254(5)

IMG_3292(5)IMG_3306(5)IMG_3279(5)

Inside we explored measurement in an open ended way, with plenty of hands-on activities!  We used a scale to weigh heavy and light objects.  Some of us were able to balance the scale.  We also enjoyed a water table filled with cups of different sizes and shapes to explore volume in a developmentally appropriate way.  For this age, that means hands-on open exploration of real materials!

 IMG_3196(5)IMG_3213(4)

IMG_3226(4)IMG_3189(2)IMG_3210(5)

PREK2: During group we read the story “Triangle”.  We paid attention to the shapes triangle past through as we read.  At the end we added a triangle to the small, medium, or big category just like we saw in the story.

Good (snowy) afternoon!

We began our morning with books in the Habi-trail area. Our friends brought out plastic blocks and used their imaginative play skills to pretend that they were boats. Miss Bekah read several of our favorite books to us.

IMG_1384(4)IMG_1385(4)IMG_1386(4)IMG_1388(3)IMG_1389(4)IMG_1393(3)

We then made our way to the kitchen for a loose parts sensory activity on our light table. Our bin had translucent sensory beads, translucent large shape buttons, translucent sensory cylinders, ball scoops and a shovel. We scooped up the mixture with our shovel or scoop and poured it back into the bin. We also dug in the mixture with our hands to find the buttons and worked on identifying the shape.

IMG_1397(4)IMG_1395(4)IMG_1402(4)IMG_1412(4)IMG_1413(4)

A friend brought in a children’s magazine with a T-rex dance for us to follow along to. The song is “I’m a Little T-Rex,” to the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot.” We’ve included photos of the song so that you can try it at home with your little one.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we marched and tapped our rhythm sticks to Ants Go Marching.

IMG_1338(3)IMG_1341(4)

We then headed into the kitchen to paint with dot markers.  Instead of sitting in chairs we stood at the table working our gross motor muscles as we painted.  We marched, hopped, turned around and then made a dot and wiggled our hips while filling our papers full of colorful dots.

IMG_1348(4)IMG_1350(4)IMG_1353(4)IMG_1354(3)IMG_1355(4)

We then brought down or drums to make a beat.  We listened to Its Raining, It’s Pouring and made a pitter patter sound like rain drops with our pointer fingers.  We also made a fast, loud beat for the thunder part of the song.

Good afternoon!

This morning several friends were interested in making lists.  We suggested the option of using a clipboard to gather information around the classroom and create a class list.  The kids decided to ask about food.  Some chose to ask what everyone’s favorite foods were in the class.  Others chose to ask which of three fruits was their favorite and tally the results.  Overall, the kids had a great time practicing counting, writing, tallying, and gathering information in the form of play!
