It’s been a happy, busy day at Wee Friends!

IMG 7621 IMG 7624 IMG 7626

We have a new camera and are still making computer program adjustments so that we can include photos of our daily activities! Thanks for being patient with us as we work out the kinks….

Many different interests were being explored in our classroom today. A few older friends have expressed interest in airplanes and other flying machines. To support their play, we created a pilot’s briefcase filled with a variety of airplanes and jets, a pilot’s journal with various colored pencils, a few library books about airplanes/flight and a felt board airplane matching game. Friends matched like airplanes and like numbers, 1-4.

Many of our friends are still exploring the lives of bears! Today, we incorporated a new cave: remember last winter when we made a life sized mitten (king sized bed sheet sewn together!) to play in as we read Jan Brett’s The Mitten? We pulled it out today and pretended it was a cave. Melinda gathered props and created a puppet play of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Friends listened intently and applauded when it was over!

Paulina led friends outdoors to plant seeds and pick tomatoes. She brought with her trays with white paper and red markers. After harvesting MORE TOMATOES!!! friends gathered on the deck to write about their experiences.

One of our toddlers is very interested in crickets. We all gathered in the music area to listen to/dance to/sing to and have conversations about crickets chirping in the night (soundtrack). Paulina read The Very Quiet Cricket by Eric Carle. We discovered how crickets chirp and we rubbed our hands together and created a cricket chorus! The book has two repetitive sentences and an older friend shouted out these lines when it was time.IMG 7652

For lunch we served WF cucumbers, corn-on-the-cob (thank you Alexandra G.!), bananas and whole wheat pasta with chicken.

Have a great day!

WWF, A great beginning to a new week!

Our morning began with a walk around the neighborhood. The children were excellent about identifying several dogs, and a cat. Some of our younger WWF’s were great about making the animal sounds as well. Upon our return, we took full advantage of the gorgeous morning. Some of us did a sensory experiment with rocks. The children felt them to see if they were smooth or rough, and we also incorporated learning light and heavy. After looking at some of our pictures from past WWF activities, we began having some conversation about our friend’s Maite and Caelan. We brought out our art trays, markers, and paper. We will send some pictures to them. Finn told us how much he misses them. We also did our donut shop game, and read a book on shapes and one on transportation. Dumping and filling seemed to be a favorite activity in the sandbox today. Some of the older children were working on counting the number of scoops it took to fill up certain objects. Watering the garden and picking some green beans was also part of our morning agenda.

We welcomed friends to school today with a continuation of our ‘exploracion de rokas’! We filled two tubs with warm water and added small glass stones to one and medium sized rocks to the other. With spoons, spatulas, and small/medium/large containers, friends poured, sorted, splashed and picked up the various rocks. We identified different colors of glass stones and added environmental music of a splashing stream to enhance discovery and a sense of calm!

A small group of friends explored the beautiful illustrations and interesting sounds of Boucle d’or by Pere Castor- a French adaptation of Goldilocks and the Three Bears! Thank you, Amy C.! Page after page represented illustrations of groups of three. We counted the objects within those groups and asked “which size is this?” Afterwards, we studied how the number three looks and moved to the art table to experiment with the lines and curves of ‘3’. One friend translated her understanding of the number and the concept of size by drawing three lines and calling them “Daddy, Mommy and Baby”. Another friend drew three letter ‘x”s and applied the same relationships to his drawing.

When a friend expressed that she wanted to be a bear in her cave, a small group of friends moved to housekeeping and we played the instrumental track “Grizzly Bear Cubs With Their Mom After a Storm”. Our cubs created caves and hibernated in the cold winter. When spring came, we added our splashing stream music and caught salmon in the stream, with a fishing pole! Our play-based exploration of the bears enabled us to collaborate as a group: when a friend would contribute an explanation of what she was doing, the rest of the group had the opportunity to listen/watch and follow an ever shifting leader. One friend became the protector of all the girl cubs. He chose to stay on shore (out of the stream) but followed our every move, explaining his actions as he went along. In this type of educational play, each friend ‘belongs’ and has the freedom to find his/her voice in the context of our storytelling. Our play ended with a fish fry and a long bear sleep under the imagined stars.

Our camera was on the blitz today so we aren’t able to tell you today’s story through photos! We’ll be back up next week.

Today’s lunch was WF roasted zucchini, whole wheat torillas with melted cheese and cantelope.

We hope you enjoy your family time this weekend!

WWF, Planes, trains and the magic carpet!

The children really enjoyed experimenting with our ball and stick-like magnets. A few of them decided they could make ice cream cones! A discussion took place on what flavor they would each have. We talked about long and short as well. Water play with rocks kept the interest of some in the kitchen, learning which can be heavy, and which were lighter in weight. Others played in our bin of fall leaves. They enjoyed the texture of these, and demonstrated their fine motor skills while scooping, and using their dust pans and brushes to sweep them up.

016

What a beautiful morning to water the plants and harvest the garden. It was also a great day for a walk. It has been wonderful to hear the different discussions the children initiate and that we can elaborate on. Each of their gross motor skills are improving daily as they are mastering climbing our log cabin, running around the yard, and peddling the bikes. Many of them are exhibiting becoming great climbers up our log steps to the slides. A morning highlight appeared to be the children sitting on some collapsible card board boxes. It is amazing how something so simple can really get young minds thinking. They became passengers on a train, an airplane, and a magic carpet. How creative!

Our WWF’s dined on whole wheat cheese-filled tortillas, mixed vegetables, and fresh cantaloupe.

Enjoy the weekend with your beautiful children.

WF Daily Exploration Thursday Aug. 25

What a lovely creative flow Wee Friends experienced this morning!380

Friends gathered in the reading area to listen to Goldilocks by Janice Russell. We focused on and discussed the concepts of small, medium and large. Friends looked around the classroom and gathered together chairs that represented these three sizes. We gathered enough chairs for each friend to sit on and then introduced the game “Musical Chair”s. After a few rounds we identified who was in a large, medium or small chair. 269

To further explore the idea of small/medium/large, we added sound by plunking out, on the piano, large sounding low notes, medium sounding notes and bright sweet sounding high notes. Paulina took out her recorder set and played the sopranino, alto and tenor recorders. As she played, she taught friends the Spanish words: pequeno, mediano and grande.

278

Friends closed their eyes and identified which sound they were hearing.281

Two small groups emerged out of this exploration: one moved to the art table to paste small/medium/large squares onto construction paper and the other to the reading area to cut and create with felt. One friend made a bear mask, another a fairy tale with a fallen tree and a third, a two dimensional, multi material (felt and thread) work of art. 293 305 308

Our garden has produced so many tomatoes that we’ve decided to make a Wee Friends Marinara! Friends began the multi step process today by picking the stems off the tomatoes and putting them in to a large bowl. They each took a turn sprinkling the tomatoes with salt and pouring a bit of olive oil over them. With very clean hands, they mixed them up.312

320

340 Outside, Paulina placed various sized rocks (Spanish=rocas) in a bowl of water. Friends enjoyed exploring the textures, temperatures and weight of the stones. Later, during journal time, friends continued their rock study, writing and drawing images and impressions of their exploration.

427For lunch we served slices of turkey with WF potatoes (mashed!) and apple slices.

Enjoy your day!

WWF test their memories!

We started our day with our “Fire truck” song. Elizabeth instantly put on one of our firemen hats with her purse! Finn also grabbed a hat, and the pink tutu. Mr. Jason played his guitar for us. The children used our new rainbow ribbons to his beautiful music. We also welcomed Eleanor, and her dad, John. They visited for a few hours today, as she will be joining us after Labor Day. She recently turned two.

012

The children played some matching games. We used five different cards. One was a crab. Finn told us about being on the beach, and how a crab snapped his toe! Another one was of a conch shell. We talked about different types of shells, and how some are big, others are small. The apple tree was easily identified. The dragon fly and mushroom were a little more difficult. After discussing all of them, the children were all given one of the cards to match to the one we had placed on the floor. They did a great job, so it was time to step it up a notch. We talked about the “Memory Game,” and brought it down off the shelf. This is one bright group of children. They identified each card before we placed it face down on the floor, and they grasped this concept with no difficulty. We will add an additional card each day.

065

Miss Tami and Amy took a group of the smaller children on a walk. Marty stayed with our infants, while the older children played in our rice bin outside with Miss Lisa. This seems to be a great sensory bin for them. Our rice bin is full of funnels, tubes and shovels, and small tin buckets. We have discussed empty and full, large and small amounts, and have counted scoops of rice into the tins. Upon the return of the smaller WeeWee’s, Miss Lisa took Finn, Marta, and Elizabeth on a walk. We identified different cars, shapes, and colors.

The children came in for lunch, and we all sang our gathering song. They loved their whole wheat bagels with cheese, a delicious avacado and raisin salad, and peas. After lunch the children listened to a few songs and books before transitions to nap time.

Later today we will take some of our cars outside and race them down our slides. Creative minds will be a flow on our outdoor painting easels.

Enjoy the day~

WF Daily Explorations 8-24-11, Journaling!

WF 055

Today’s blog is my day to share a passion of mine…teaching children to read through journal writing. Traditionally, reading is taught by asking children to memorize letters and attach sounds to these letters. Then, children are asked to read by “sounding” out the words. I have found this to be backwards and fraught with frustration and failure for both the kids and adults. My great success in teaching reading has been through journaling with children. Wee Friends teaches children to write first, then read. When children write first, learning to read becomes a beautiful journey that is exciting and rewarding for everyone involved.

Wee Friends makes journaling a regular and important part of our curriculum because:

WF 061

Children have an opportunity to express thoughts, feelings, and words onto paper for others to see and read.

WF 060

Children learn to value writing, and to respect the writing of others.
We often go into our journal time following a small group story time. We talk about the authors role in the story and connect how the children are “telling” their own story. Children talk with us about what they have written and they share with each other their stories. They learn that everyone’s picture has value.

WF 058

Children have REAL and RELEVANT opportunities to learn the conventions of print such as; each letter has a sound (or many sounds) and words are made up of these individual sounds combined; print goes from left to right; and print goes from the top to the bottom of a page.

We can show a child the letter B a hundred times and it won’t stick. However, if the child is excited about a story that was read about a bear, came to the table and journaled about a bear, wanted to write about their bear, the letter B now has meaning. It is at that “teachable moment” a Wee Friend teacher is ready to supply the information that the child’s brain is hungry and ready to receive. This emotional connection will guarantee that the letter B is now learned.

WF 059

Children can experiment with letters, letter sounds, and inventive spelling in a safe way. When children are asked to de-code words (read) prematurely, they are regularly wrong. When they do kids spelling, they are in control and they experience success. They can read what they wrote and they build literacy confidence.

The journey of learning to read starts with the first scribble when children are just toddlers. Children then move to drawing with purpose (circles to drawing people and objects). They then start to understand that writing can be dictated to “tell” their story. Finally, children become ready to start their own kids spelling and begin to sound the words to tell their story them self. It is the Wee Friends teacher’s role to walk with them through this journey and help them when they are ready to learn to write their name, to record their dictated words, to help them start kids spelling when they are ready, and all the zillion steps in between!

WF 057

Writing gives children time to practice the fine motor control that will help them become better writers.

Yesterday’s blog gave several examples of ways that children develop fine motor skills other than writing. Often they need lots of other fine motor experiences to build the strength to write easily and with purpose. But, we foster a positive journaling culture that children want to be a part of. This means they get lots of time drawing and building the right fine motor muscles!

Have a great day,

Tami

WWF Go to the car wash

The children have had a very productive morning. They started the day with our donut shop game, then we read a book about airplanes and cars. The discussion broadened as we talked about washing our bodies as they get dirty, and how we do the same with cars. The kitchen sink was filled with bubbles, and it was time to get busy washing our play cars. The children seemed to really enjoy it. Some of the children ventured on a walk. They have had a lot of fun identifying some of the cars of their fellow Wee Wee’s coming down the street or in the neighborhood for drop off, some of them stopping to join our group.

051

The children enjoyed dumping and filling buckets in our big rice bin this morning. They seemed to have really enjoyed this sensory activity. Some enjoyed just sitting in it, while others did not care at all for the texture of it. Trays with construction paper, tape, shapes and other fun objects was also a great art outdoor activity.

062

After our delicious lunch of ham, bean and vegetable soup served with whole wheat bread and bananas, we listened to some books and music on CD. This is a great way to calm and relax the children prior to nap time.

This afternoon we will do some outdoor chalk drawings and talk more about cars and the different components of it. The children are enjoying our new magnets which are circles, and bar like objects in all different colors. They are learning to discover how they connect, learning colors, and creating all different shapes with them. Some of them have been working on number and color sequencing with them as well.

069

We can assure you that today you will only be receiving one blog from us! I guess it is fair to say that sometimes “two are better than none,” as was the case yesterday!

Thanks for all you do! Take a moment to think about the smile of your little one when you are feeling exhausted by day’s end, and how love really is a smile even when you are tired! Enjoy the day!

WWF Daily Explorations, Tuesday 8.23.11

004

014

Today WWF began the day exploring high and low musical sounds. They listened, moved and sung to a different a range of recorders (tenor, alto, soprano and sopranino recorders). Using streamers they moved making large strokes and bouncy short strokes according to the music.

022026

With a fully staffed house (all four of are here this week), teachers continue working on getting our new babies adjusted to the new environment. Holding, carrying, singing, bouncing, rocking, strolling and having lots of one on one time with them!

023031

Having the extra teachers this week has allowed all other WWF continue their daily explorations as well.

033

Have great day!
