Good Afternoon!

We used the tornado siren alert this morning as an opportunity to practice our tornado drill procedure. We gathered all of our friends in the reading area to talk about tornados. Children shared stories, asked questions, and prepared for the siren. As we were waiting, we talked about what we were going to do once we heard the siren. Friends carefully went down the basement steps one at a time before finally congregating in the basement where we took a headcount.

Some children exhibit fear during fire and tornado drills. Even though it’s not ‘real’, we always tell our friends that it’s best to be prepared JUST IN CASE. If feasible, it’s always a great idea to talk about what you would do as a family in case of a fire or tornado. This way, children become more comfortable talking about it. Routines are a great thing, especially when we’re dealing with something a little scary!

K/PREK1 read a book titled, ‘Friends’ which talked about the characteristics of being a good friend. We chatted about the topic for a bit before switching gears to counting. Each friend got a laminated piece of paper with their name on it. As they observed their paper, we talked about the numbers that they saw. Together, we counted from 10 to 100 by 10’s. After, each friend had the chance to count to 100 by 10’s without any help before rolling up their mat. Several older friends counted by 10’s successfully so the next extension will be switching focus to counting by 5’s!

K.NS.1: Count to at least 100 by ones and tens.

PREK2 used eggs to connect a number to the correct number of dots. Each friend got a half of an egg that had dots on it. They used their one to one correspondence skills to count the dots. Each friend found the matching number and connected the egg together.

Children took turns at the art table where they created an egg of some sort. The materials that we used were glitter, feathers, sand, mulch, and paint. Each friend had the choice to make any animal egg. With the help of a teacher, the animal egg they chose was explored via the internet. The animal eggs that we created ranged from platypus to frog to chicken.

“Too often we give children answers to remember rather than problems to solve.”
