Good Afternoon!

Yesterday in K/PREK1 group, we read a story titled ‘Be Kind’ which is a part of our MACK curriculum book collection. Towards the end of the story, there’s a picture of a service member coming home with an American flag draped over his back and shoulders. Several friends inquired about this and why the picture was illustrated this way.

Various questions and statements were made:

“What’s that blanket that he has on his back?”

“Is that Indiana’s flag too?”

“What are other flags for other places?”

…and when I pulled up the American flag and explained why there were 50 stars and 13 strips, many friends asked, “What’s a colony?”

SO:

Today, we answered those questions. First, we talked about what a colony is. We used the map of the United States as a reference and noticed that all of the colonies were together, along the Atlantic Ocean. Many friends thought it was unfair that Indiana wasn’t included Smile.

Then, we identified just a few flags from other countries. Grady was able to identify the flag from France and Canada, stating, “My grandparents live in Canada!”

You never know what can come from a new and exciting story!
