Good Afternoon!

We read the second part of the Miss Nelson book today in K/PREK1: Miss Nelson Is Back!

When we got to the art table, children got out their journals and drew a picture. Our journal experience consists of a few parts: drawing a picture, writing their name/sticker/date stamp, and finally writing a description about their drawing.

We scaffold this time depending on the developmental level of each child. To start, teachers write down children’s descriptions which gives us a great opportunity to have authentic conversations about letters. When friends can identify letters, they start writing their own descriptions with the help of a teacher. And finally when they’re starting to hear sounds, they ‘kid spell’ which is where they write out words based solely on the sounds that they hear. Kid spelling at this age may look like ‘montan’ for mountain or ‘dg’ for dog.

Children usually have an easier time hearing consonants while those tricky vowels take practice!

K.RF.4.3: Recognize the long and short sounds for the five major vowels.

In PREK2 group, friends chose one question on the leaf and had to answer it. A few friends wrote the letters by themselves while Miss Kim dotted the letters for other friends.

Our science area was busy earlier this morning as children looked at their favorite science books. They love learning about various animals, community helpers such as firefighters, and Earth/solar system.
