Good Afternoon!

We continued working with numbers for our PREK1 group sign in. Each group member came to sign in where they were asked to find their name, flip over their card, and count the number of items that were drawn on their card. Then, they had to determine if that number was less than 10 or more than 10. They taped their card into the correct group.

Later on in PREK1 group, we focused on the second text genre: poetry. Arthur saw the book, ‘A Light In The Attic’ and he immediately shared, “I think we’re going to read poetry today!”. We added the title and text genre to our chart that we’re completing throughout this week as we continue to explore different text genres.

K.NS.9: Use correctly the words for comparison, including: one and many; none, some and all; more and less; most and least; and equal to, more than, and less than.

K.RL.3.1: Recognize familiar narrative text genres (e.g. fiction, nonfiction, fairytales, poems).

This morning a friend came into class asking if we could put together the giant alphabet floor puzzle.  Several kids worked to assemble the puzzle as a group.  One of our kids took on the job of reading off our letter sheet so friends would know which letter in the alphabet came next.  It became a great project to practice communication, cooperation and group planning, all child driven.  After the puzzle was done, the group spontaneously came up with a game taking turns to jump to their name letters.  Amazing!

Kids were so engaged with the floor puzzle, that we thought we would offer an activity in the art center to build upon that interest.  Kids were offered the opportunity to make their own alphabet puzzle.  Kids who wanted to do this used stamps to create the alphabet on a large piece of card stock.  Next, they used scissors to cut the puzzle into letter pieces.  Some kids enjoyed inviting a friend to put the puzzle toKgether with them.  Others made envelopes to store their puzzles in.  As younger friends showed interest, we modified the activity to fit their developmental needs.  Younger kids used the stamps and card stock to create a “name puzzle”.

When children play with letters whether they’re doing a large foam floor puzzle or working with stamps to spell their name, they are able to soak in and retain the information as children learn best through play!
