Good Afternoon!
We kicked off our week by diving into a few of our FAB’s for the week. For our PREK1 sign in, children came up the board where we started working with the phrases ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’. We’ll start implementing those phrases into our understanding of mathematical equations and what each means. Children looked at two different groups, used their one to one correspondence skills to count each group, and then figure out which group was greater than the other group.
Later on in PREK1 group, we talked about the important things a book needs to make it complete! We explored the words character, setting, and event and how each of these add to stories. We read our story, wrote it on our chart, and worked at identifying the characters, setting, and events in our story! When we started talking about events, we began to look at it in three sections: beginning of the story, middle of the story, and end of the story. Throughout the week, we’ll continue to add each book we read to our chart.
K.NS.7: Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group.
K.RL.2.3: Identify important elements of the text (e.g. characters, setting, or events).
This morning, we offered a sorting/counting activity at the round table. Kids found different ways to sort objects on each tray. Since every tray was different, kids enjoyed “trading” trays to try all of them. Older friends counted how many objects they sorted into each group, then looked for the corresponding number. One friend was able to count 19 and select the 1 and 9 to represent what he had counted.
It was a diverse day in the art center as each child had a unique idea for an individual project. Kids asked for materials and helped brainstorming solutions for what they wanted to make. We had some paper animals, a hair bow, a butterfly with antenna and a “one to one ratio taping activity” all happening at the same time. Everyone was able to work on projects tailored to their own individual needs, ideas and skills.
