Good Afternoon!
Our PREK1 sign in journal revolved around our morning project: our beans! Kiddos came to the board where they identified the two things that their bean will need to grow: water and sunlight!
Later on in group, we read ‘Stellaluna’ which focused on two kinds of animals: bats and birds. We talked about the things that they need to survive. We highlighted two things, food and shelter, which were both prominent in the book.
Since we have been talking about plants and animals, we decided it was a great time for a bean observation science project. Everyone who wanted to plant a bean and watch it grow, added two beans to a clear plastic bag. We added a wet paper towel since we remembered that one thing a plant needs is water to grow. As we taped our beans up to the window, we remembered that another thing plants need to grow is light. Older friends made a bean journal so they could record their observations as the bean grows. We learned that “observing” the bean means we are paying attention and noticing. If we make an observational drawing of the bean we are only drawing what we see right now. We also do this when we write about it. Some kids wrote about how the bean looked, “the bean is the shape of an oval”. Others wrote about where the bean was in its growth process. One friends wrote,“now its just a bean”. As long as kids were writing about what they observed, it went into the journal.
PREK2: During group, we learned about plant growth. We read a book called “Grow It”. We came up to the board to decide which part of the bean growing into a plant happened “first, next and last.”
