Good Afternoon!
We worked weather into our conversations about plants this morning as children wrote their name under the season where trees start to bud and flowers start to bloom for our PREK1 sign in! We are currently seeing this outside. This led friends to share what happens to trees and plants in other seasons like winter for example!
Science: K.4.2 Observe plant and animals, describing how they are alike and how they are different.
This morning we created a pond habitat in our tuff tray since we have been observing tadpoles. When we were ready to add the animals we got to decide if the animal lived on land, in the water or could live in either environment. We added some real leaves to our pond environment for play. One plant we added is often called a “Velcro weed”. It is a native plant that comes up in early spring and the kids had a great time sticking it to their clothes.
Later, one of our older friends decided to expand on this project and create charts to categorize animals by their attributes (this was totally child driven). As she made her headings, she asked “what is the name of animals that lay eggs?”. After a bit of research, we found the scientific name for the attribute “Oviparous”. We talked about how the word “Ovi” is Latin for egg. What an amazing question for someone who is only five years old! These are the kinds of child driven lessons we aim for at Wee Friends because they foster a love of learning!
PREK2: Today we read the book “Turtle Splash”. After the story, we thought of one animal that lived in the water to add to our group board.
We hope you enjoy a few more pictures from our day.
