Good Afternoon!
**Reminder: Wee Friends is closed Monday, June 22nd through Friday, July 3rd. We’ll reopen on Monday, July 6th.
This week, we started talking about maps and globes. Today, we focused on cities specifically for our PREK1 sign in. Each group member wrote their name under the city that they live in. This immediately heightened interest as children saw the map, asking where various states are that are of interest to them! Hannah asked what the large state was at the bottom of the map to which I replied, “Texas!”. She instantly smiled and said, “That’s the biggest state we have!”. We pointed out various states such as Florida, Wisconsin, Kansas, and Massachusetts.
Social Studies: K.3.2 Identify maps and globes as ways of representing Earth and understand differences between a map/globe.
This morning, a friend was building with magnetic tiles on the building rug. He noticed that if he put a magnet inside his sock, the magnet on the outside stuck to it. We decided to set up a way to further explore this idea at the round table. Kids tried using magnets to attract other magnets through different types of materials. Kids tried fabric, paper, plastic and wood. They found they could even get the magnets to attract through multiple layers of materials. One friend said, “I can use the magnets to sew all of the pieces together!” as he figured out how to make a long chain of scarves. This is an example of how kid’s natural inclination to tinker and explore can drive curriculum, creating great hands-on learning opportunities for everyone!
Kids also continued to explore their interest in pipes, connectors, pumps, gravity and water movement throughout the indoor and outdoor classroom!
