Good Afternoon!

For our PREK1 sign in, we focused on travel and how we prefer to get around. A lot of our friends are traveling to Europe or overseas this summer so we specifically talked about how we need to travel across the Atlantic ocean because driving is not an option! However, we also talked about the various ways we can travel within the United States including by train, car, and airplane!

We played off of our interest surrounding continents and new places by reading our world book for group time, Here and There, as requested by Arthur! We chose to read about nature and how it looks different on different continents and different countries. We learned about animals that occupy specific places and habitats. We used a map of the world to help identify where a few of these places are.

Today, we offered a maps activity table since the older kids have been talking about maps during group.  Several kids have been traveling out of the country or have plans to, so many of our kids have been interested in where these places are on the map.  We offered a stencil activity where kids could stencil the continents with colored pencil.  Several kids decided to make a “world maps” book.  They took time to write the names of each continent and then create a cover with a title.

Kids could try a playdough world map activity as well, using playdough to look at the world map and create their own.  Kids began to recognize the shape of certain continents as they tried the various activities.  Arthur shared that South America was the shape of a tornado.

We offered a continent puzzle activity as well which younger kids were able to do.  They looked at the shapes of the continents and found the matching piece to fit.

Hannah took this project even further…both figuratively and literally into outer space.  She wanted to draw the planet Earth with the continents as it would look from space.  Next, she made a chart including Earth and Mars. She took her chart around the class and asked friends to choose which planet they liked best.  She commented ,“Boy, people sure do like Earth a lot!”.  This is exactly the type of evolution we love to see in class projects.  It shows us kids are using their own creativity and critical thinking skills to think for themselves.  They are able to make connections and build on what they have learned all on their own..
