Good Afternoon!

This morning, we offered an open-ended building project at the art center.  Kids were given several large boxes and a range of smaller cardboard pieces to create something with.  The kids got to work right away.  They did a great job of naturally pairing into teams working together.  They preferred to work together rather than alone which was nice to see.  We had one older/younger friend team which worked extremely well together.  We are so impressed by our older kids ability to work on projects cooperatively and independently! The kids built airplanes which later became tents.  One friend built a car which later became a refrigerator :).  Kids played with their creations all morning, and then took them outside to continue playing with them!  Some kids even ate wee sprouts inside of them Smile .  During projects like this, kids are using sustained attention, creative problem solving and critical thinking skills.  They build language, communication and cooperative skills as they work together to solve problems.  These valuable experiences build higher-thinking abilities and social/emotional development that will last a life time.
