The two kindergartens went outside this morning to get some fresh air, work on their sign in activity, and practice some reading using our BOB books! For their sign in, they were asked to write or draw a rule that we have outside that we have to follow. The two rules that they came up with were no running at the bottom of the yard because of the babies while the other rule was don’t throw sand in the faces of friends—both very important rules!

Student S and Student A worked their way through a different BOB book. We start using BOB books when children show us they may be ready to read! The BOB books offer a very simple reading experience, focusing on specific sounds for each group of books. Once a child has been able to master a book, they’ll move onto the next!

Social Studies: K. 2.3 Give examples of classroom and school rules and explain how each help us.

Our older friends are often given jobs such as cleaning up specific spaces before we head outside or running an errand over to the infant/toddler classroom. We also ask that our older friends help their younger peers when they need help getting their shoes on or serving them a wee sprout. We love the multi age classroom because our older children are given more responsibilities and have high expectations to be a key member of a well functioning class!

Social Studies: K.2.1 Give examples of people who are community helpers (inside the classroom and outside the classroom) and describe how they help us.

We offered a macaroni tray this morning for kids to explore. These kinds of open-ended activates are designed to encourage kids imagination, cooperative play and social emotional skills as they figure out the give and take of group play. They are also developing their fine motor skills and an early understanding of volume as they spoon/pour into a variety of cup sizes. Kids can learn so much from simple open-ended exploratory play.

Older kids shared that they have been enjoying making charts in their kindergarten curriculum. They wanted to make charts at the art center today. We talked about how to use a ruler to create charts and grids. Next, we decided what information we wanted to chart. One friend chose to create team names and find out which was the class favorite. Another friend drew pictures of Halloween characters and found out which character the class liked the best. Both ideas were great example of kids applying what they learn and exploring through play. This is when those new ideas really solidify.

Another great thing that happens when older kids explore their learning in this way is the younger kids often watch and learn from them as they did today.
