We got caught up on kindergarten sign in’s this morning where we focused on a few different FAB’s. Monday’s sign in focused on identifying and writing uppercase letters as well as lowercase letters. Tuesday’s sign in asked children to sort words based on the number of syllables! Both Student A and Student S felt comfortable with the clapping method so they clapped out nine different words, counted the syllables in each word, and taped the word into the correct group. Wednesday’s sign in focused on arrays. Each child had four arrays where they counted the items using their one to one correspondence skills and taped the cards from smallest to largest.

K.NS.5: Count up to 20 objects arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle. Count up to 10 objects in a scattered configuration.

K.RF.3.2: Orally segment words into syllables.

K.RF.2.4: Identify and name all of the uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

For our PREK1 group, we read ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. We pulled several different food words for our sorting activity. Each group member got two words and a few even tried to sound out the words! They sorted the words into the correct syllables category.

A friend was very excited about his idea to make a dragon in the art center today. One of our younger friends was welcomed to help. The boys worked on building this dragon all morning. They used some long strips of painted paper to make the legs and tail. Collaborative art projects like this have many benefits in a multi-age program: one being that kids can be inspired to take more creative risks when seeing peers doing so, especially older peers. Older friends get a chance to play the role of a leader and teacher. Working together in this way also brings new perspectives. Seeing how classmates make decisions broadens the group’s problem solving and visual spacial reasoning. Such great things are happening during projects like this.

Any time we notice kids having the drive to paint their hands at the easel, we try to offer a sensory or finger painting activity to satisfy the need for it. Several kids enjoyed finger painting at the art table this morning!

Older kids found lots of ways to integrate their kid-spelling and writing skills into their play. Some kids made charts, others made books, all child driven and carried out independently.
