Good Afternoon!

We started week 2 of our kindergarten FAB cycle! This week, we’re diving into shapes. Our two kindergarteners were given four shapes to search for in our classroom. They each found a circle, square, rectangle, and triangle. We had a conversation where we talked about the differences between squares and rectangles. When they found an item in the classroom, they came back to their binders and wrote what they found.

In PREK1 group, we read ‘Thidwick, the Big Hearted Moose’ which was a great introduction to rhyming words which we’ll focus on this week!

K.4.1: Identify and describe geometric objects: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, diamond, trapezoid, hexagon, octagon, parallelogram, sphere, and cube.

Our PREK1 friends came to the board where they found their name card and we read the directions on their card. They were asked to write their name in a specific shape.

Kids explored an open ended sensory activity designed to encourage learning about measurement.  We looked at our measuring cups and a teacher pointed out the 1/4 and 3/4 cup.  We tried filling the 1/4 cup with cornmeal 3 times and found that it filled the 3/4 cup perfectly.  We tried the same with 1/3 filled two times with oats filled the 2/3 cup.  This is a great hands-on visual way for kids to start understanding fractions.  They have already been interested in measurement since Ms. Ashley makes muffins on most Wednesdays.  Kids enjoyed continuing to explore these concepts through play working in pairs.  There were some great opportunities for social emotional math as we practiced dividing materials “in half” so each friend had the same amount.

Other kids spent the morning using a variety of building materials and creating “group think” building projects.  There were multi-room houses, cars and boats.  Kids have been doing an excellent job of working as a team to solve problems and think creatively together!  This is excellent for complex higher level thinking, like creative problem solving and executive planning.  Doing this as a group only multiplies the neuropathways kids are forming and advances their social emotional growth!

Below is an article that encompasses the importance of building and what children gain from having ample building opportunities! It’s one of those articles that makes the reader say, “Wow. So there’s so much more going on here than just building with blocks!” Smile.

PREK2: During group today we practiced Yoga and deep breathing.  We read the story “Triangle”.  Next, kids came up to the board and were asked to place their name under the triangle or under the square.  Kids had to find the right shape, then put their names underneath.
