Good Afternoon!

Our kindergarteners made themselves comfortable in the reading area as we explored making more complex shapes using simple two dimensional shapes. Each kindergartener was given several different cards that used magnatile shapes to create more complex shapes. They used triangles and squares to make these shapes. They used six triangles to make a hexagon, three triangles to make a trapezoid, and two squares to make a rectangle.

Then, they were asked to draw in their binder one new shape that they created with the magnatiles. Student S decided to draw her trapezoid where she used three triangles. This one stuck out to her because she couldn’t quite figure out how to place the three triangles and when she figured it out, she was quite excited!

K.G.4: Compose simple geometric shapes to form larger shapes (e.g. create a rectangle composed of two triangles).

This week, we’re talking about the role that authors and illustrators play in creating a book! We’ll be documenting each day the book that we read in group as well as the author and illustrator of that book. We talked about the importance of how the words and pictures have to match on each page in order to be able to tell the story correctly!

K.RL.3.2: Define the role of the author and illustrator of a story in telling the story.

Our PREK1 sign in group came to the board where they were asked to write their name under the shape with four sides. A few friends counted the sides both the square and triangle. We talked about the differences between ‘sides’ and ‘vertices’ which we’ll also discuss throughout the week.

K.G.2: Compare shapes using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, and parts (e.g. number of sides, length of sides, and vertices).

Today, we used some fresh picked apples (which were generously donated) to make applesauce.  Kids enjoyed watching the process and helping prepare the apples.  Kids learned how to dice apples themselves using a kid safe plastic knife.  They are excited to try the apple sauce at snack time!
