Good Afternoon!

Our two kindergarteners worked on sorting weather related pictures into the correct season. This week, we’ve been working on sorting like items together. After they were done sorting, they drew their favorite weather or season in their binders and explained why. Student S shared her favorite season was spring because that’s when bunnies come out of hibernation She even wrote ‘Spring of 2026’ above her drawing. Student A shared his favorite season was fall and subsequentially drew a pumpkin!

Later on in PREK1 group, we tackled the second text genre of the week: nonfiction! We read two short nonfiction books from our science area collection where we learned about our planet Earth as well as the job of a construction worker! Immediately when we were done, friends were eager to share that the two books we read were nonfiction because it was about real facts. They asked about the author and illustrator of each book. The book about construction workers had an author but didn’t have an illustrator because there weren’t illustrations, just real life pictures!

K.DA.1: Identify, sort, and classify objects by size, number, or other attributes. Identify objects that do not belong to a particular group and explain the reasoning used.

K.RL.3.1: Recognize familiar narrative text genres (e.g. fiction, nonfiction, fairytales, poems).

Our three PREK1 kiddos came to the board where they were asked to find their name. Once they were able to locate their name, we read their four words. They looked for similarities of the words and determined which word didn’t belong to the group.

We offered a painting activity using wire scrubbers as a way to create new and interesting marks. These activities help kids think outside the box about what materials can be used for. They create flexibility in thinking and creative problem solving skills.

Kids explored a sorting activity at the round table which encouraged sorting by size or color. This activity was open-ended however, so many kids created imaginative play around the materials too, which we always encourage.
