Some of our older friends have been spending time each day sharing interesting facts they have learned about animals. Yesterday, I suggested a project where they could create a board where kids would illustrate and write animal facts they knew. Then, they’d present their knowledge to the class as a small “report”. Initially, this was intended only for our two oldest kids, but some younger kids showed interest as well. Older kids wrote out facts about each animals, where younger kids drew pictures of different animals or added the names. Here are some of the facts that kids added to their boards: “Jellyfish lived before dinosaurs; otters hold hands when they sleep; penguins give rocks to each other; caterpillars transform; humans are the only animals that blush; and (getting into some eastern philosophical metaphors) snakes can bite their own tails. Some kids REALLY enjoyed the teaching aspect of the project, letting kids raise their hands and asking questions and quizzing kids on what they learned.

Our two kindergarteners came to the reading area where we hunkered down to complete our fifth sign in of the week! Today’s focus was identifying the item that doesn’t belong in a group and explain why. Both kindergarteners had five groups of words, all surrounding a specific topic for each group. For example, one group of words read: ‘banana, strawberry, apple, marker’. They identified ‘marker’ as the word that didn’t fit and shared it was because the rest of the words were kinds of fruit!

K.DA.1: Identify, sort, and classify objects by size, number, or other attributes. Identify objects that do not belong to a particular group and explain the reasoning used.

Our two PREK1 friends came to sign in where they wrote their name under the definition of nonfiction stories. Throughout the week, we’ve read a different story from a new genre. Today, we focused on poetry. We read ‘The Book of Animal Poetry’ from National Geographic. It has over 200 poems and it surrounds a topic that we all enjoy learning about: animals! It is highly discounted right now on Amazon if you feel inclined to get it for your house! I’ll post the link below:
