Good Afternoon!

We continued to fill in our chart during PREK1 group and after reading ‘The Sandwich Swap’, friends were eager to talk about the book. There are two main characters in the book with a few secondary characters. There is quite the climax of an event in the story: a food fight! We always enjoy reading this part when we get to it. At the end, the school holds a potluck with food from all different countries. Children immediately noticed the flags of various countries and this prompted a friend to draw two flags that he knows from watching the World Cup this summer! We love when children bring their prior knowledge from home into the classroom!

K.RL.2.3: Identify important elements of the text (e.g. characters, settings, or events).

Our journals keep evolving: the details and ability to kid spell are amazing! Older friends are working with and identifying blends. A few friends are also starting to write their last name on their journal entry.

This morning, younger friends were particularly interested in a sensory/imaginative play activity exploring dry oats, apples, bowls, spoons and measuring cups.  Kids loved making pretend apple cakes, apple muffins and apple sauce.  They collected oatmeal and pretended to measure their ingredients as they filled their bowls.  Kids enjoyed creating play schemas with one another, often sharing space and utensils cooperatively.  What great social emotional skills these kids are developing as they play!

Older kids got interested in building three dimensional creations using recycled materials.  This activity was child driven, starting with one friend asking for materials to build a robot.  Another friend decided to make a “box of donuts” and another made a “treasure box”.  It’s exciting to see kids able to form complex plans and execute them three dimensionally!  This takes a great deal of higher level thinking like creative problem solving and executive planning, then pairing that with fine motor skills.  So much happens in the brain as kids imagine and build these kinds of creative projects.

PREK2: We worked on some new yoga poses during group this morning that challenged our bodies with balance, deep breathing and coordination.  We also came up to the board after our story to find the first letter of our name, then put our name sticker next to it.
