Good Afternoon–

Our PREK1 friends came to the board where we started talking about comparison words. We sorted three fruits based on weight. Children wrote their name under ‘watermelon’ as that was the heaviest fruit on the board.

In PREK1/K group, we read ‘Henry and Mudge In Puddle Trouble’. It’s a short chapter book that we’ve never read before so before we started, we looked at the cover and guessed which character was what. As we came upon an important event, we guessed what would happen next! Kids LOVED doing this and were anxious to see if they were correct.

K.M.1: Make direct comparisons of the length, capacity, weight, and temperature of objects, and recognize which object is shorter, longer, taller, lighter, heavier, warmer, cooler, or holds more.

K.RL.2.4: Make predictions about what will happen in a story.

This morning, we continued to explore color mixing.  On Friday, there were several kids still interested in this activity, but since other friends had mixed colors so long, not everyone had a turn.  We always encourage kids to stay with activities until they have fully explored the interest.  This is where deep and meaningful learning takes place because kids have had enough time experimenting to begin forming predictions and asking questions.  Sometimes this means that only a few kids will have a turn on a given day.  When this happens, we try to offer the activity as long as needed for all of those interested to get a chance to fully engage with it.

We had a wonderful discussion outside beginning with a friend sharing that he knew about the three states of matter. This lead to a discussion about different planets in our solar system and the different conditions that exist on those distant worlds.  Several friends joined the discussion.  One friend added that she knew the biggest volcano is on Mars.  We talked about volcanic activity on different planets after that.  Such meaningful learning can arise completely naturally when given the time and space.
