Happy Friday!

We used a nonfiction book from the science area to help us with our sign in this morning. We read the book, ‘Underground Homes’, which talked about the various animals that live underground. When we were done, both kindergarteners chose two animals to write or draw that live underground and provide one fact they learned in the story. Did you know Komodo dragons are one of the largest animals to live underground? They can grow up to be ten feet long and eat pigs and deer!

In the art center, kids experimented with a variety of painting materials.  They tried using sponges, a loofa, and a mop to make different kinds of marks outside of what they are used to.  This kind of activity encourages the brain to think differently, use creative problem solving and expand ideas.  Kids took very different approaches.  Some created controlled patterns while others used big expressive marks.  This variety of solutions often comes of “process art” where kids have a great deal of freedom to explore creatively.  It is a developmentally rich approach to art in early childhood.
