Good Afternoon!

Our two kindergarteners came to sign in this afternoon where we sorted books based on alphabetical order. A group of six books were given to them and we had to identify the authors last name and document it on our letter sheet. Starting with the first letter of the alphabet, we sorted the six books the way a librarian would. They wrote the title of all six books. As we sorted them, we tried to recall what happens in each book!

K.1.19: Learn and apply knowledge of alphabetical order (first letter) when using a classroom or school library/media center.

During K/PREK1 group, we read ‘The Kissing Hand’ by Audrey Penn. We noticed that the author’s last name starts with a ‘P’ and a child immediately shared that a librarian would put the book in the P section. We’ve been continuing to talk about alphabetical order in group throughout the week.

When we finished our story, children were given their number card where kids took turns counting by 10’s to 100 if they wanted to. Most friends attempted on their own and a few wanted help from the group.

K.NS.1: Count to at least 100 by ones and tens.

PREK1 kiddos came to sign in where they were asked to find their name and array. Instead of counting the items in their array, children were asked to either look at the array to see if they could see how many items by simply looking or by adding the top and bottom row. Since each array had matching rows, most children chose to add!

K.NS.6: Recognize sets of 1 to 10 objects in patterned arrangements and tell how many without counting.

At the round table, we offered a counting activity.  We offered three different trays that encouraged sorting, counting and categorizing objects.  Some kids laid out the numbers 1-8, then added that number of shells or gems to each box.  One friend put shells that looked alike together in each box, counted how many there were, then added numbers.  There were many ways to practice sorting, counting and number recognition in this activity.

A child initiated activity emerged outside when a couple of kids asked if they could trace the leaves they found.  We offered materials to help.  They also tried leaf rubbing with the leaves they collected.
