Happy Friday!

We wrapped up our week talking about authors and illustrators and how they work together. I took an illustration out of the story for our PREK1 sign in, ‘I Don’t Want To Take A Bath!’. We read the book later on in group. Throughout the story, Little Tiger visited several animal friends to try to get away from taking a bath. Throughout his adventure, he gets even more dirty! We talked about how each illustration matches the authors words. Once we understood this, we looked at the illustration to see if we could see what the authors words might say!

K.RL.4.1: Describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we worked on a group letter puzzle.  There has been a lot of interest in puzzles and in writing so we figured we would work on letter sounds and puzzles all at once!  Our teacher gave us a clue, making the letter’s sound.  Then we worked together to find both the letter and the square it fit inside.  We saw some great team work in our kids as they pieced together the alphabet puzzle.

Good Afternoon!

We continued talking about shapes for our PREK1 sign in today! Each group member came to the board where we walked through a series of steps.

First, children searched the board for their name. They identified the corresponding shape and then counted the sides of their shape. On a plate was a group of different numbers. They searched and found the correct number and taped their number inside of their shape. Eliza was surprised to learn that there were zero sides on a circle.

K.G.2: Compare shapes using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, and parts (e.g. number of sides, length of sides, and vertices).

Later on in group, we read a book titled, ‘The Way I Feel’ from our MACK collection. Throughout the story, the author and illustrator demonstrated how they work together to share the words AND the corresponding illustration. Each page had a specific feeling with a facial expression on a character. On a few pages, we looked at the characters facial expression to see if we could guess the emotion on that page!

We talked about different situations in our life that makes us feel a certain way. Our friends with siblings shared that sometimes they feel jealous when their other sibling is getting attention from their parents and they’re not—so relatable and true!

MACK WEEK 3: Children will learn to recognize and name emotions in themselves and others.

K.RL.4.1: Describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear.

There has been interest in collecting and playing with leaves outside lately, so we thought it would be a great time to do this leaf printing art project.  Kids chose their favorite leaf shapes.  They painted their leaves and then pressed them onto their paper to make prints of the leaves.  Some kids experimented with painting blocks of different shades of green on the same leaf or painting compound leaves in different shades.  This made for some interesting prints!

Another interest that popped up for the morning was solving puzzles.  Some kids have been able to put together our most difficult pattern play puzzle.  Several kids got interested in trying more difficult puzzles and challenging themselves.  We saw some great team work as kids helped each other with struggles or gave each other pointers.

Good Afternoon!

**Wee Friends Families—we have a large group of younger children who are interested in wooden puzzles (6-12 piece puzzles). If you have any that your children have outgrown, we would love any donations that you may have! Thank you!

Our PREK1 group came to the sign in board where they worked at locating a four sided shape. Once they found a four sided shape, they circled the shape, identified the shape, and wrote their name! There were a few shapes mixed in that had either zero or three sides, sparking up a conversation about how shapes have a specific number of sides.

Later on in group, we read ‘The Boy With Big, Big Feelings’. We talked about our own feelings as well as identifying feelings in others. We completed an exercise where we closed our eyes, did some deep breathing, and thought about our day (who we played with, what activities we did, etc). After we took a minute to rethink about our morning, everyone opened their eyes. I asked friends to keep their voices quiet but to raise their hand when this certain emotion applied to their morning. For example, I asked, “Raise your hand if you felt sad at any point this morning?” (a few friends raised their hand). Then, I asked, “Raise your hand if you felt angry at any point this morning?”—we continued on with a few other feelings but we talked about how we often feel many emotions in a given time so our friends can feel the same emotions too!

K.G.2: Compare shapes using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, and parts (e.g. number of sides, length of sides, and vertices).

MACK WEEK 3: Children will learn to recognize and name emotions in themselves and others.

IMG_0166IMG_0161IMG_0172

We have been playing with different ways to use shapes as well as putting them together to make new shapes.  Today at our welcome activity, we offered three different shape trays for kids to explore openly.  They made many discoveries through this exploration.  Some friends found that they could use a large half circle from the circle tray to roll the round wooden pieces down.  Others found they could balance the pieces to create tall towers, or as one friends made “pineapple ice cream cones”.  Others found colored pieces on their trays and chose to sort them by color.  It was great to see all the creative ways kids chose to use the shapes.

IMG_0159IMG_0148IMG_0149IMG_0151

At the art center, writing work continued.  Some kids wrote the names of their family members on cards they chose from the materials box.  Others made books and practiced sounding out stories to write down.  All these little projects allowed for deep child led learning experiences in the area of language and writing.

Happy Monday!

We kicked off our week by talking about how smaller shapes can make larger shapes! Our PREK1 friends came up to the sign in board where they looked at a new shape that was formed by using two squares. Children immediately identified the new shape as a rectangle.

K.G.4: Compose simple geometric shapes to form larger shapes (e.g. create a rectangle composed of two triangles).

IMG_0101IMG_0100IMG_0104

This morning, kids worked on a welcome activity using shapes to create letters.  Friends practiced using small shapes to make larger shapes, matching/identifying shapes and identifying letters.  Many kids chose the first letter of their name to fill in with the pattern blocks.
