Good Afternoon!

Our FAB’s kicked off this week! FAB stands for Framework for Academic Balance—essentially our Wee Friends version of state standards. These are aimed for our kindergarteners but we also implement these standards at a foundational level for our older preschoolers, when applicable.

Today in PREK1 group, we read ‘My Body’. We talked about similarities we have in our physical appearance such as we all have hair! We also dove into the specific differences such as hair color and whether we have straight or curly hair. When we were done reading, we talked about our family size. Each group member had a chance to count the number of family members that live in their household. We totaled the family members and marked it on our chart. This allowed friends to see what other peers have the same family size!

Social Studies: K.3.6 Identify and compare similarities and differences in families, classmates, neighbors and neighborhoods, and ethnic and cultural groups.

This morning we practiced sorting by color at our welcome activity.  We found all the right places for the colored beads.  We practiced color names and counting as well.  Some of us got so excited about sorting that it became a full body experience :).

In the art center we continued working on our water color leaf and flower paintings.  We created beautiful arrangements on out paper and added color.  We are excited to see what our paintings look like when they dry!

Good Afternoon!

One of our morning activities, was painting.  We used red, blue, and yellow tempera paint with different sizes of sponge circle brushes.  One friend added yellow to their red that was already on their paper and created a new color.

Good Afternoon!

We enjoyed working on an art activity in the art center this morning.  Friends looked through a tray of leaves and flowers collected from our outdoor space.  Kids arranged their natural objects on their paper and then used an eye dropper to add watercolor around the leaves and flowers.  As the paint dries, we will be able to see the outlines of the leaves and flowers in the paintings.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we worked on making pegboard shapes with rubber bands.  Older friends found they could make many shapes within shapes.  Arthur found that he had made hexagons, trapezoids, triangles and a square all in one overlapping shape.  Younger friends used their fine motor skills to place the pegs into the board and add rubber bands over the pegs.  We always aim for all developmental needs to be met by our multi-age activities.

Good Afternoon!

Today we celebrated a friends 1st birthday.  We enjoyed celebrating with you.  Thank you for the delicious snack.

We also welcomed our new baby,  Rose to the Wee Wee classroom.  We are happy to  have you and your family part of our classroom.  They have been part of the Wee Friends family for several years, and her big brother Albert just left to go to a new school.

This morning, we spent a lot of time in Housekeeping! Friends pretended to eat meals together, and take care of their baby dolls. A couple friends even walked their baby dolls around the classroom while singing, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star to them.

IMG_9901IMG_9962IMG_9925IMG_9909IMG_9908

Then, Miss Bekah put out some loose parts-wooden shapes and animals for us to explore! A couple of our friends stacked their shapes, while others explored the variety of shapes and animals on their trays.

IMG_9947IMG_9949IMG_9950IMG_9953

We had an inside morning due to all the rain we had.  A child brought the shakers and maracas basket down, and began exploring all the different sounds of them.   At some point, almost every friend had shakers and were playing them together around the basket, some friends even switching shakers amongst themselves.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we engaged with the shape houses.  We worked on identifying the names of the different shapes and Miss Bekah said the name for us if we needed help.  We also worked at putting them in the correct place in the roof of the house.

IMG_9818IMG_9816

We then engaged with the musical instruments.  We shook the bells to hear the sounds they made and then tapped the bars of the xylophone with the mallet to hear the sounds and make our own unique music.

IMG_9822IMG_9811IMG_9825IMG_9827IMG_9824

We then headed outside and rode together with a friend on the teeter totter, engaged with the dinosaurs and feeling the texture of the sand with our hands, drawing with chalk on the cement and our friend Cece was working on her walking skills today.

Good Afternoon!

Our oldest kids have been on a writing and illustrating streak!  We are seeing at least one new book from each of them every day.  Today we had a book called “Ten Little Blueberries” and one called “The Day the Dogs Came Home”.  Our little writers have been learning about authors and illustrators through this activity.  They have been practicing kid spelling, learning about sentence structure, narrative and bringing to life ideas using creative problem solving and executive planning.  All this learning seamlessly transpires from emergent curriculum.

IMG_8052IMG_8050

During our welcome activity we explored water movement and fine motor development.  We used pipes, funnels, tongs, tweezers and pompoms in our large water tray.  A couple of friends noticed they had some pompoms stuck in the pipes.  It presented the perfect opportunity for some creative problem solving.  The kids were offered a few tools they could use to figure out how to get the pompoms out.  It’s always better to allow kids to solve as many problems themselves as possible.  This helps them build their problem solving skills as well as their self esteem.

IMG_8042IMG_8040IMG_8056

We also exercised fine motor development at the light table as friends hung small rings on the branches of a little tree.
