Happy October!

This morning, we pulled out the rainbows and boats! Some children rocked themselves back and forth while others sat in the colorful boats and listened to “Row Row Row Your Boat.” Our babies also enjoyed the morning, watching all the activities and being helped by their friends.

Later, we brought out our Mix and Match Magnetic Animals! Friends showed the various animal parts they found to Miss Audrey, and made all sorts of different animal combinations.

When we went outside, many of our friends spent time in the sand box today, filling up trucks or making holes in the sand. Other friends went down the slide.

Good Afternoon!

We used the book ‘Tacky In Trouble’ today for our PREK1 sign in. Children were able to identify the other main character besides Tacky: the elephant!

Later on in group, we read the story while we paid close attention to the details of the story. When we were done reading it, we all worked together to add to our chart and boy, did our group recall the story in great detail! One friend added a specific event just to be reminded by another peer that there was an important event that happened right before! We filled in our chart and were happy to see that September is over! We flipped our calendar to the month of October! Smile

We are so proud of all the progress our journal kids are making.  Our older kids are doing a great job with letter sounds and kid spelling.  Our younger kids are getting the hang of how to talk about their drawings and creating more deliberate journal entries.

In the art center we used the materials that kids were interested in yesterday.  Today we used the materials to experiment with and make art.  Kids expressed that they were interested in openly exploring the paint squeeze bottles and the squeegee, so we created art with them all morning.  This activity proved to be great for keeping attention.  Some friends stayed for 20-30 minutes to paint.

Good afternoon!

Hannah asked, “What are we going to be signing in about today? I think it should be about a book..”.

She read my mind! We used ‘Froggy’s Lemonade Stand’ to help us identify the setting. Children chose from three different settings and wrote their name under the correct setting of the book.

Later on in PREK1 group, we read the book and made sure to pay attention to the characters, setting, and various specific events that occurred in the story. We’ve been using the words beginning, middle and end when talking about events in a story.

One friend added that a character in the story was the lemonade stand. This allowed us to have a  meaningful conversation about characters and the things we look for in characters. We talked about how the lemonade stand was an important aspect of the story but it wasn’t a character because it didn’t talk or speak in the story.

Today, we used a painting activity to practice retaining information and then following a loose set of directions in order.  The project was intended to build focused attention, memory and verbalization.

I explained the entire process at the beginning of the project.  The kids would see how many steps they could remember. I explained that first, they would make small dots all over their paper using the squeeze bottles. Next, they would use the squeegee to pull the paint across the paper, then they would choose some leaves and paint them, using the tray of red paint and brushes. Lastly, they would print the leaves on the painting.  I checked in at each step to see what each child could remember asking, “What is next?”.  Of course, younger kids needed some help remembering what to do, but often could remember a couple of steps.  There were some of our older friends that could remember every step, and verbalize all of the things they would be doing.

Though we were using paint to draw interest in practicing following a step by step process, this wasn’t really an “art” project.  I feel it’s important to specify that  our “art” projects are about open free expression and experimentation with very little instruction if any.

PREK2:  Today in group we read the story “The Creature of Habit”.  We are learning about parts of a story like characters and settings.  At the end of group, we picked which was our favorite Character, the very big or very small creature.  We added our name to the board under the character we picked.

Good Afternoon!

We kicked off the week by using one of our favorite books called ‘Save It’ to help us sign in. Using the cover to assist us, children signed in under who they thought the main character would be.

Later on in PREK1 group, we read ‘Save It’. We talked about three important things that you need to create a book or story: characters, setting, and events. Each day this week, we’ll read a different book for group and add these three things to our chart after we read the book. Children to quick to start conversing about the characters and the order of events that took place in the book. One friend even added, “There can be more than one setting in a book!”.

Today we practiced sorting and counting at our welcome activity.  Younger kids sorted their buttons by color and then tried counting a few of their sorted buttons.  Older friends sorted and then searched for the number they got in the number cards.  Some kids placed a number card next to each of their groups of sorted buttons to represent how many they had in the group.

In the art center, several kids became interested in one of our drawing books.  The books showed a variety of ways the kids could used their hands to make drawings.  Many of the kids worked were very motivated to reproduce every detail of the pictures displayed in the book.  This interest develops skills in the area of fine motor and attention to detail.  At the easel, one friend was interested in using the paint to create patterns.  It’s fun to see math skills merged into artwork!

Happy Friday!

We ended our week by talking about our favorite books for our PREK1 sign in activity. One of our friends shared that her favorite books are Magic Treehouse books while Hannah shared that her favorite book is a nonfiction book called ‘Sh’ma’ which is a Jewish prayer that they read before bedtime. As we shared our favorite book, we categorized it into the correct text genre. I enjoyed hearing all of the unique and interesting books that children read at home as well as their favorite books to read at school!

A color mixing activity took place at the art table this morning. Three trays were made available with different combinations of colors. Each tray made a different secondary color. Kids loved using the eye droppers to slowly but surely combine two primary colors to make a secondary color!

Good morning!

Our PREK1 friends came to the sign in board where we identified the third text genre of the week: nonfiction! Children looked at two fall books: ‘Colorful Leaves’ and ‘Amazing Apples’. They signed their name under ‘nonfiction’. Later, we read both of the books during group. We were amazed to learn that there are more than 7.000 kinds of apples! Several friends were eager to share that they’ve already been apple picking and one friend even shared that she got special donuts when her family went to pick apples! Fall is the best time!

We’ve been tackling the four main text genres this week and we’ve loved hearing children use these text genres in conversation. Hannah came in this morning and shared that she had already read one fiction and one nonfiction book this morning! She shared a few reasons as to why the fiction book she read was indeed fiction!

K.RL.3.1: Recognize familiar narrative text genres (e.g. fiction, nonfiction, fairytales, poems).

This morning we offered a sorting activity.  Each tray had a variety of examples of triangles, circles, squares or rectangles.  Kids tried sorting all of the like-objects.  Next, we offered for kids to use all of the objects and sort by shape or color. Here are some examples of how the kids sorted their shapes.

IMG_0769IMG_0799IMG_0759

IMG_0776IMG_0777IMG_0801

After the initial activity, we put the objects in the middle for kids to sort and think creatively with.  Hannah created an interesting mosaic, making two’s pattern of like-shapes that she stacked.  Arthur noticed the numbers on the tiles that were also offered.  He began to count how many of each like-object he had sorted and then laid the corresponding number next to each collection.  In case you are wondering, the 8 went with the triangles, not the three.  He got all of them lined up correctly!
