Happy Friday!

K/PREK1 read a story titled ‘The Tale of Two Beasts’ which has two main characters and they each get to tell their side of the story which is completely different! We talked about the narrator of each story as there were two different versions of the same story.

Afterwards, we looked at the three circle that were drawn on the chalkboard. I read the words, ‘banana’, ‘blueberry’, and ‘grape’. Friends immediately started shouting words like ‘apple’ or ‘watermelon’. We quickly discovered that only fruits go into this circle. A friend said ‘rice’ and I asked if that fit. Several friends said, “No! That’s not a fruit”. So after talking about it, we decided to put it outside of the circle. We did the same thing with the next two circles as we talked about the relationship of the words in each circle.

K.RV.2.2: Identify and sort pictures of objects into categories (e.g., colors, shapes, opposites).

PREK2 used their prior knowledge about shapes to answer the question, “What shape isn’t part of this group?”. Children counted the sides of each shape and determined that the yellow square did not fit because the rest of the shapes were all a type of triangle!

“Did you know that the right brain develops first? It does so by the time children are 3-4 years of age. The left brain, on the other hand, doesn’t fully come online until children are approximately seven years old; hence the first seven years being recognized as such a critical period in child development.”

Wee Friends teachers were given a few articles to read last and I’ve made a few copies and put them on the island of an article that I found quite interesting! It talks about the left and right side of the brain and what expectations are appropriate for developing children around this age. The author, Vince Gowmon, says “The push for academia on children is a symptom of a society that is left brain dominant, or forgetful of the wonderful playground that is the right brain.”

I found this information especially interesting as I was connecting the information in the article compared to what we expect of children at Wee Friends on a daily basis. Children in PREK2 and K/PREK1 journal groups are at varying ability levels when it comes to ‘writing’ or ‘kid spelling’ or even ‘letter identification’. What we expect for each child is widely different and how we approach we learning situation with each child is unique.

Feel free to grab a copy of the article titled, ‘The Right Brain Develops First- Why Play is the Foundation for Academic Learning’ which is on the island Smile.

Daniel asked Miss Marty if we could play with the letters activity this morning, and Evie wanted to join in the fun as well. We looked for the letter D, and the letter E for the first letter in their names. Unfortunately, we didn’t find any D’s but we did find a letter M for Daniel’s Mommy, Manga (his grandma) and Mar-Mar. Evie was happy that we did find the letter E for Evie! We worked on the other letters that we found as well, and sounded them out! It was a great time Smile

Good Afternoon!

K/PREK1 celebrated National Cat Day a day late by reading ‘Cat, You Better Come Home’. After we were done, we revisited the sentences on the chalkboard from yesterday. Together, we identified three different types of end punctuation: period, question mark, and exclamation point.

Our last activity to end group consisted of a number activity that allowed for varying levels of development to participate. Up on the chalkboard, I put the number words. I held up the number ‘7’ which everyone was able to identify. Our older friends who have letter knowledge looked for the number word that started with an ‘s’ because ‘seven’ starts with an ‘s’. We talked about the letter sounds we were hearing and seeing as we went through each number word and matching number. As we matched the number word to it’s number, we taped them next to one another.

K.NS.2: Write whole numbers from 0 to 20 and recognize number words from 0 to 10.

DSCN3825DSCN3831

After PREK2 read their story, they participated in an activity where one to one correspondence skills were used as well as number identification knowledge. Miss Kim drew pictures on the board and each child was given a number card with a number and the corresponding number word. Together, they counted the number of items in each picture and figured out who had that number card. Children came up to the board and matched their number card to the correct picture!

Maxwell grabbed the sand numbers this morning and practiced his number identification by using crayons and pencils as he completed rubbings of specific numbers.

Good Afternoon!

“A child’s life is like a piece of paper on which every person leaves a mark.” ~pinterest.com

I’m very sorry there was no blog yesterday as we were experiencing technical difficulties.

Today we utilized our hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills while painting glue onto a piece of construction paper. We then placed colorful shapes onto the glue areas of the paper. We also talked about the different shapes that we had and the colors of those shapes. Please check the bamboo boards for your child’s. They all turned out great!  Smile

Happy Monday!

*Just a reminder—we’ll have our annual Halloween parade around the block on Wednesday starting at 4:00. We’re looking forward to it!

**Wee Friends will be closed for the following breaks:

Thanksgiving break is Thursday, November 22nd and Friday, November 23rd.

Christmas break is Monday, December 24th through Friday, January 4th.

___________________________________________________________________________

K/PREK1 pulled out a favorite Dr. Seuss story: “Mr. Brown Can Moo. Can You”, is one of our favorites because it’s very interactive and allows the children to become involved too. As we were reading, Maxwell said, “Hey! What’s that?”. He was referring to the question mark that was on the page so we talked about different punctuation that we saw. Afterwards, we read several different sentences and categorized them based on the ending punctuation. We described the period sentences as making a statement, the question mark sentences as asking a question, and the exclamation point sentences as saying something excitedly or a little louder than usual.

K.W.6.2b: Punctuation—Recognizing and naming end punctuation.

DSCN3765DSCN3766

In PREK2, children looked at three different items: snowflake, ice cube, and snow. Together, they talked about how these three items were all alike. Each friend had the opportunity to sign in under their answer!
