Good Afternoon!

Anna requested the unifix cubes this morning after breakfast. Anna and Lucy each took a unifix tray and filled it up using a variety of colorful cubes.

Maddie and Lulu used the trays to create a pattern by sorting colors. Lulu solved a problem aloud: “I need nine yellow cubes and I already have seven. So, that means I need two more yellow cubes!”

Various friends used the pattern books too! A pattern was started and it was our job to finish it.

When the swimmers were off perfecting their back strokes, Miss Rebekah made zucchini muffins with everyone else! We used a rather large zucchini that we picked from the garden—the muffins were a big hit!

Emma brought in mussels that she found near Detroit over the weekend! Miss Melinda pulled out the computer to research mussels with our friends. Emma’s mom sanitized the mussels so we were able to use our sense of touch to explore the mussels.

Good Afternoon!

This week, we’re focusing on the following FAB’s:

K.W.2.1: Write most uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet, correctly shaping and spacing.

K.W.2.1: Identify and produce rhyming words.

K.G.3: Model shapes in the world by composing shapes from objects and drawing shapes.

K.4.1: Identify and describe geometric objects: circle, triangle, square, triangle, diamond, trapezoid, hexagon, octagon, parallelogram, sphere, and cube. (2006 standard)

In large group, we read ‘Happy Birthday, Tacky!”. Throughout the story, we found three words that we wrote on the chalkboard. After, we came up with as many rhyming words that we could think of for each word. We talked about how these are ‘word families’ because they are similar! Lulu commented, “We came up with the most rhyming words for cake!”

This morning, the older group went to the farm for the first time this season! We started off the day by taking a walk back to the cornfields which was about a two mile walk—phew!

When we got back to the farm, we fed the turkeys using some wild flowers. We found out that turkeys have fuzzy ears so that it prohibits bugs from getting in their ears! They sure do like to peck! Smile

Brooms were brought out so we could do our weekly cleaning before heading to the pond to look at some creatures that were caught! We saw a few snapping turtles, a frog, and some minnows.

Before getting back to Wee Friends, we grabbed some of Miss Charlotte’s eggs to bring back to school. We were very careful carrying them!

Back at Wee Friends, children used dominos to make designs!

The gross motor area is our favorite spot in the classroom to be on rainy mornings! Working on gross motor skills helps a child gain strength and confidence in their body. Developing these skills helps a child’s ability to do more complex skills in future activities.

Good Afternoon!

The welcome activity involved pegs and peg boards. Several children sat down to interact with the activity in various ways. Lucy created a pattern specific to colors while Lulu filled up both yellow foam boards. Once they were filled, she counted each row that had ten pegs. After, she started counting by 10’s and came to the conclusion that there were 50 pegs in all.

K.NS.4: Perform one-to-one correspondence tasks.

K.NS.5: Count up to 20 objects arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle. Count up to 10 objects in a scattered configuration.

Teamwork: the combined action of a group of people, especially when effective and efficient.

The letter matching box was put on the circle table this morning and many children flocked to it. Our kindergarten friends and older preschoolers practiced identifying every letter, uppercase and lowercase. A couple younger friends were very interested in the activity so they worked on identifying letters that they were familiar with (letters in their name, etc.).

K.RF.2.4: Identify and name all uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

In large group, we read ‘Elmer and the Kangaroo’. Throughout the story, we paid attention to the animals in the story. Afterwards, we listed the animals and figured out how many syllables were in each animal word.

Looking at the list, we figured out that there were no animals with one or four syllables while most of the animal words had two syllables.

K.RF.3.2: Orally segment words into syllables.

Good Afternoon!

Lulu and Maddie helped me finish the syllable cards that we used in an activity this morning! Each child had five clip cards at a time. After looking at the picture on the card, we used two techniques (chin and clap) to figure out how many syllables were in each word. Lucy had a picture of a fish so using both techniques, she put her clothespin on the number ‘1’ to show that fish has one syllable.

The art table was transformed into an ice cream shop as children matched the ice cream top (uppercase letter) to the cone (lowercase letter). Afterwards, we were so interested in the ice cream cones that we started creating our own!

K.RF.2.4: Identify and name all uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

In large group, we read ‘There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly’. We made an animal line of which animals the old lady ate. We talked about how each animal that came next was bigger than the one before. Friends decided that this was DEFINTELY a made up story Smile. A few children noted that if we WANTED to, we could eat a fly and a spider but nothing else!

Even though the weather was a little dreary, we made the best of our Thursday!

Good Afternoon!

The welcome activity focused on using our one-to-one correspondence skills. There were several flower cards available. Using the counters, children put the correct number of counters on each flower depending on the number that was shown. For example, a flower that had the number 4 (representing four petals) would have 4 counters on it!

K.NS.4: Perform one-to-one correspondence tasks.

In kindergarten today:

Our kindergarteners plus a few older preschoolers grabbed trays and met at the circle table. Each child participating had their own bag of spoons. White spoons were the lowercase spoons while the clear spoons were the uppercase spoons. The goal was to match the lowercase spoon to its matching uppercase spoon.

There were many techniques that came about. Lulu and Max worked together for a while. They put the spoons across the entire tray and just started searching for matches. Lucy separated the clear spoons and white spoons before starting the matching process.

DSCN6539DSCN6540

Lulu commented, “Once you start finding matches, it gets easier!” Maddie and Lulu completed this activity several times and after the first time, they both stated, “I want to do this all by myself this time!”…and they did!

During the process, we came up with words that started with specific letters. For example, Lulu found the letter ‘L’. As a group, we brainstormed words that start with the letter ‘L’. Lucy, Lulu, lion, and lollipop were just a few that were thought of!

Lulu also noticed that a few of the letters looked EXACTLY the same on the uppercase and lowercase spoons. “These p’s look the same!” We talked about a few letters that look exactly the same in the uppercase and lowercase form (just a little bigger in size). We came up with the following list: C/c, O/o, P/p, S/s, V/v, W/w, X/x, and Z/z.

K.RF.2.4: Identify and name all uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
