Happy Friday!

**Reminder: For those enrolled in swim lessons, please have your child’s swim suit here by Tuesday at the latest! Thank you!

A pink gerbera daisy was put in the center of the art table for a still life observation/art session.

First, we looked at the flower and smelled it as well as identified the different parts of the flower. Friends noted that we couldn’t see the roots!

Afterwards, a variety of utensils including markers, crayons, and colored pencils were put on the lazy susan for children to use. Each child had a different view of the plant; there were no drawings there were alike.

Jackson and Lucy painted their wood creation from yesterday. Picking the water colors is always such an important decision!

DSCN8999DSCN9002

We needed a new banner for the front area of the house so our kindergarteners got to work! They each took half of the paper and drew what spring meant to them.

DSCN9021DSCN9036

Thank goodness for an outside space that lets us run! We came outside and were able to release energy that we had all morning. Our energy turned into..superhero play! Each child that was involved had a different super power that helped the group. Lucy’s super power was turning everything into a rainbow; perfectly matching her new jacket.

Good Afternoon!

Today, we celebrated TWO birthdays!

Jackson turned SIX today! Since he and Lucy share a birthday, Jackson’s going to bring in a special treat to share tomorrow. We hope you had a fabulous birthday, Jackson.

DSCN4949

Lucy turned FOUR today! She was quite happy to FINALLY get that right of passage: real nails at the work bench. This is what turning four means at Wee Friends.

DSCN4951DSCN4913

In large group, we focused on the biggest plant there is: a tree! Today, we specifically talked about apple trees. It takes about seven years for an apple seed to become a full grown tree! We learned about apple trees in all four seasons and what each looks like. Friends shared that they liked the apple tree best in the fall because they can pick apples!

Today we spent a big amount of our outside time in the rock circle, playing in the dirt and working on our climbing skills! Our friends had a great time getting their hands dirty!

We started our morning jumping as high as we could!

Friends waiting for their turn on the trampoline pulled down pianos and shakers to play with together.

Friends ran right to the slides when we went outside. They have just as much fun climbing up the rocks as they do going down the slide!

DSCN0417DSCN0426

The teeter totters were also popular. Emma sat on one end and called for friends to come join her.

Good Afternoon!

In large group, we read a book that focused on BEARS; polar, black, and brown!

We started off our conversation by identifying that a bear is an animal and what that means. Our group learned several things about bears, specifically:

1. Once a ‘cub’ is three years old, they leave their mommy and go off on their own! We came to the conclusion that even though we’re three or older, we are NOT ready to leave our mommy.

2. Bears eat salmon, about fifteen a day!

3. Brown bears can climb tree and sleep on thick branches high up in a tree; they feel safe there.

Tomorrow, we’re going to talk about a special type of plant: a tree!

In large group, we continued our exploration into plants and animals. Today, we focused on spiders. Our knowledge of spiders grew exponentially. For example, did you know that spiders can have 8 eyes, 6 eyes, 4 eyes, or 2 eyes? It just depends on the type of spider.

Today Miss Melinda took some of the older friends on a nature walk. They walked around the block to observe the flowers and plants that are in bloom.

Good Afternoon!

This week in large group, we’ll be concentrating on the similarities and differences between plants and animals. Today’s focus was on the sunflower. First, we read a story focused specifically on sunflowers before making a list of things we learned about this certain plant.

A few comparisons we found:

Plants (sunflowers) are stationary UNLIKE animals.

Plants and animals BOTH need food/water to survive.

Tomorrow, we will buff up our knowledge about spiders. Using this list, we’re going to compare the two!

Science: K.4.2 Observe plants and animals, describing how they are alike and how they are different.

Jackson expressed the desire to maintain the grass plants that are currently in the science area. So, Jackson grabbed a few friends and passed out scissors. Each child got a pair of scissors to cut the grass because the blades sure took off over the weekend!

DSCN4608DSCN4609

Our plant theme continued outside as a few of our boys asked if they could start to weed the garden! They got to work in a few of the plant beds. Jackson made sure to show everyone how to pull out a weed, making sure to get the ROOTS too!

DSCN4614DSCN4615

The animal theme started up as a group of children surrounded a spot by the slide: it was a BEETLE! The fascination and excitement from one little beetle is huge!
