Good Afternoon!

For PREK1 sign in, children were asked to come to the sign in board where we talked about how the author and illustrator of a story work together so that the author’s words and illustrator’s pictures match. I gave children two illustrations from the book and they told me what was happening. Then, I read two different paragraphs from the book and they had to match the words to the correct illustration.

K.RL.4.1: Describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear.

After reading, ‘The Invisible Boy’ in PREK1 group, each child got a laminated card and a set of shape blocks. They used the shape blocks to build a new shape. For example, Nesta was given one hexagon and three small triangles. She had to use those four shapes to make a larger triangle.

K.G.4: Compose simple geometric shapes to form larger shapes (e.g. create a rectangle composed of two triangles).

We continued work on our group shape painting that we have been making as a process over a couple of days.  We are using classroom objects that we use every day.  We are seeing them in new ways as we use them as stamps and focus on the shapes they are made of.  We started with a layer of circles yesterday.  Today we created squares, rectangles and triangles.  We used trio blocks, bristle blocks and Legos which we usually use for building and might not normally recognize as a sum of shapes.  We noticed how the trio blocks made rectangles, but within that shape we could see circles and squares.  The Legos made circles within rectangles and even the triangular bristle blocks were made up of tiny circles.  It was a an exercise in finding shapes within shapes, thinking creatively about the use of objects and observation.

IMG_4775IMG_4773IMG_4771IMG_4765

We worked on other activities throughout the classroom using shapes.  Amelia particularly like a shape matching activity.  She enjoyed coloring the shapes herself and then matching the buttons to the correct shapes.  At the light table we used squares to see what imaginative configurations we could come up with using them.  There was a magic house that could talk when its square doors and window were opened.  We had a trick shape mixed in and friends had to guess why triangles would be part of a square activity.  Many of us found that it was because two triangles make a square!

PREK2 Group: read the story “Cool Down Calm Down” and picked one calming strategy they would choose to try.

Good Afternoon!

This morning was full of music and movement.  We danced with our dancing scarves to a song called, Put Your Finger in the Air by Greg and Steve.  Miss Bekah then got the rhythm sticks out and we tapped them as we marched around the front circle to Ants Go Marching.  We then did the motions to Listen and Move by Greg and Steve and listened for the sound that went with the specific movement.

IMG_9804IMG_9806IMG_9826IMG_9837IMG_9833IMG_9815

We then were busy creating our own musical sounds on the pianos and xylophones.

Good Afternoon!

Children scurried up to sign in where they found their name attached to a card. They flipped the card over and were given a shape they had to build using smaller shapes. For example, William was given six small green triangles and he had to use them to build a hexagon.

During PREK1 group, we read ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ and documented the titled, author, and illustrator on our chart.

K.RL.3.2: Define the role of the author and illustrator of a story in telling the story.

K.G.4: Compose simple geometric shapes to form larger shapes (e.g. create a rectangle composed of two triangles).

A group art project was started at the art table using circles and paint! Children took turns adding to the group painting. A variety of jars, cups, and tubes were made available that all left different sized circle marks on the paper which turned into a beautiful collective art piece. Throughout the week, we’ll continue to add to our collective piece of art by working with different shapes. We’re excited to see what shape is next!

IMG_4682IMG_4688IMG_4692IMG_4693

We brought out the light table to use this morning and children instantly flocked to it. A collection of various sized triangles were made available and immediately, children started creating things using simple shapes. Hannah created an image of her mom using only triangles! A few younger kids sorted the shapes based on size while also sorting by color.

Good Afternoon!

PREK1 friends started off their week by identifying a shape that they chose from the bottom of the easel. Once they identified the shape for their sign in activity, they counted the number of sides of their shape and taped it into the correct group!

K.G.2: Compare shapes using informal language to describe their similarities, different, and parts (e.g. number of sides, length of sides, and vertices).

IMG_4569IMG_4571IMG_4574IMG_4580

We continued the shape theme into PREK1 group where we focused on two characteristics of shapes: number of sides and number of vertices. I taped the shape up onto our chart and children worked together at identifying the shape. Then, we counted the number of sides and vertices together. Quickly, children noticed that the number of sides and number of vertices for each shape were the same!

We read ‘The Grouchy Ladybug’ for group today. One of our FAB focuses this week deals with understanding the roles of authors and illustrators of books. We started a chart during group that we’ll use all week where we identify the title, author, and illustrator of the book.

We recreated Friday’s sensory activity hunting for stones in ooblick.  This activity was challenging because it took experimentation to figure out how to get the stones out.  If one pulled too fast, the substance turned solid and the task was impossible.  The kids had to figure out a slow patient strategy.  Only then did the substance offer its water from, and the stones could be brought to the surface (A great life metaphor at the same time:)  There were several friends interested in trying that hadn’t gotten a chance since everyone seemed to stay with the project for a long time.  No problem!  We were happy to keep it going into day two.  Everyone who wanted to try got a chance…and some who had a turn came back for round two:)

IMG_4549IMG_4555IMG_4551IMG_4602IMG_4556

PREK2: Today during group we learned the rhyme “Two little Blackbirds”.  We tried to recall it, as we acted it out with our hands.  We read the story “Ten Dots”.  At the end of the story we tried to remember one thing that the dots made.

Happy Friday!

We began our morning building with the big plastic blocks.  We stacked them together to stand in them and be tall.  We then lined them up to make a train.

IMG_9674IMG_9680

We then headed into the kitchen to engage in a loose parts activity with pom-poms, dominos, a bowl, cup, spoon and tongs.  We worked our fine motor skills to pick our pom-poms up with our tongs and our scooping skills to pick them up with a spoon.  Charlotte and Eleanor explored using the wooden people, wooden cups and pegs while the older friends were engaged in their activity.

IMG_9685IMG_9687IMG_9690IMG_9692IMG_9698IMG_9697

We then enjoyed listening to Miss Bekah read us many books, engaged in the activities on the Zany Zoo Activity box, and worked on our tracing skills on the tracing boards.

Good Afternoon!

PREK1 kiddos came to sign in where they had to choose a card from the bottom of the board. They looked at the picture to identify it and then we worked together to find the rhyming match! They took tape and taped their puzzle piece to complete the rhyming match then signed their name next to it.

K.RF.3.1: Identify and produce rhyming words.

IMG_4356IMG_4360IMG_4363IMG_4369

After reading ‘I’m The Best’ in PREK1 group, we played a rhyming word memory game! It challenged us to remember where specific cards were but everyone ended up getting at least one match!

K.RF.3.1: Identify and produce rhyming words.

Today a friend came to school with an interest in making bridges.  We set up a welcome activity around this interest.  Everyone worked as a team to create a bridge that went all the way around the round table…as suggested by several friends!  We used paper cups and tongue depressors to created our very long bridge.  Some friends made roads under the bridge as well.  Many enjoyed some imaginative play with the bridge creations using cars, busses and trains.

IMG_4340IMG_4338IMG_4354IMG_4375IMG_4343IMG_4342

PREK2:  Today during group time we practiced a “deep breathing imaginative story” called “Hot chocolate breath”.  The story has us act out making hot chocolate using our imaginations and while doing so, practicing deep breathing.  We read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and recalled one thing the caterpillar ate at the end of the story.
