WWF, “Falling” for a great day!

It has been a great day here at WWF. This morning some of us went on our daily nature walk. We felt the texture of the beautiful fall leaves, examined the beautiful colors, and discussed some of the different shapes. Ozzie enjoyed rubbing a leaf along side his face, and then Eleanor, Marta, Elizabeth and Olivia joined in.

Sloane, Ozzie, Marta, Elizabeth and Olivia are really enjoying riding and pushing our Blue Dogs down the hill. Some have overcome any fears of the thrill and speed, while a few still have some reservations. Many of them are now pairing up to go down the slide holding hands! We are counting to three, and “ready, set, go!” The end result sure brings some smiles to our WWF! It was also a great morning to sit outside and read some fall books. Marta was our official “page turner,” and did a great job!

Our breakfast this morning was fresh fruit and whole wheat toast. Our lunch consisted of ham on whole wheat tortillas, sweet potatoes, and pears.

We look forward to a wonderful afternoon!

WF Farm, Wednesday 9.21.11

To set the mood for this blog, I must share this picture that I couldn’t resist taking this morning…

Now that we are all feeling friendly, I will share some of the highlights from our unbelievably educational and fun farm trip today:

We held chickens.  For the past few trips, Annie and Jane have been unsure about how close they wanted to get to the chickens.  Today they both held one!  Their bravery and confidence also inspired our younger girls, Arleigh and Alma to have a turn holding them too.

The children mixed the grain and fed the chickens.  Owen was able to manage the smaller bucket alone, but it took Ada, Macy and Owen with some help at the back to get the big bucket of corn into the feeding dish.

Next we fed the goats.  Alma was very uncertain about letting the goat eat grain off of her hand.  First we held her hand over our hand, and she allowed them to eat.  Very soon though, she gained confidence and shouted, “I fed the goat all by myself!”  Her expression below says it all!

Kai noticed that one of the goats did not come over to eat.  This young goat was laying over by the fence, which is not typical behavior for a goat when food of any kind is near.  We shared this information with Charlotte and our farm trip took a whole new path.  The kids were able to share in the diagnosis, care and treatment of this goat. We also went out into the field and caught all of the other goats so they all could have a preventative dose of medicine.

Feeding Luna, the young cow, was the next thing we did.  Luna wasn’t sure what she thought about us.  She can be a bit shy.  However, Ada, since her first farm trip weeks ago has been determined to “hold a cow”.  She talked soothingly to Luna and offered her grain.  Luna quickly learned that the WF group had lots of love and yummy food and she blessed us with lots of her time.

We took a short walk to finish our trip.  In this short walk, we found a small frog and took turns examining him (his body was sparkly!) and holding him (he was feisty).  I laughed so hard I had tears when the little bitty frog jumped from Owen’s hand onto his shirt.  His expression was priceless!  But, after a moment to recover, you can see below that he was happy to have the frog there.

Finally, we did some milk week explorations.  Milkweed is the favorite food of Monarch butterflys and caterpillars.  We looked at the milk drip from the plant and looked at some of the dried milkweed seeds.  We also examined the milk weed beetles.

Have a great afternoon!

It’s already Wednesday!? Yes! time flies for our busy Wee Wees. This morning we took our usual walks and played outside. What a gorgeous fall day!

Ozzie was amused by the noises he could do while walking up and down our hill outside. He practiced this several times and invited teachers and friends to join him! so we did!

017

We had some time to paint and had a new artist joining the club. It was Pnei’el’s first time at the easel, and she was very intrigued by the effects of her strokes on the paper.

023

025

She has also been working hard at her newest most fun skill. WALKING!

031

PK is working on pulling himself up. He often scoots up to our feet and finds our legs to pull up and stand. He is also learning to move his body forward and get on his hands and feet in preparation for crawling.

034

Clara is working on following objects and people with eyes, for long periods as well as in eye-hand coordination. Her dimples go from here to next week! We love her continuous smile!

039

For the last couple of weeks we have noticed how Marta and Elizabeth have been interested in seating down to scan books and notebooks independently from their teachers. To follow this interest, this week we started offering their own journals and time to sit and explore pre-writing skills. While this age is too early for official journaling, we hope we are supporting the very begining of this skills and encourage them to build this wonderful habit into their lives.

WF “Extra” Daily Exploration, Tuesday 9-20-11

We had such a great science afternoon that I am writing a quick second blog so you can see and talk with your kids tonight about the cool things that happened.

081

Outside, Owen found a huge preying mantis. The preying mantis allowed me to hold him for just a minute and then we examined him for quite awhile on a bucket. In the picture, I’d like to believe that he was surrendering to his admirers, but it’s more likely he was saying “Back Off!”.

Now we have to wonder if the preying mantis is one of our babies from the “Preying Mantis Fiasco” of 2009. We had gotten a sac of preying mantis eggs in fall 2008. The egg sac lived in science room in a jar until late May 2009 when I needed the jar for another science find. Thinking the egg sac was a dud, I put him on the kitchen window sill. However, if I had done my research about this, I would have know that the preying mantis hatches in early June. Alas, one morning Melinda opened WF with around 300 preying mantis babies running around the kitchen! Of course, we captured and released them into our garden and sent around 150 back to the farm.

A little later, the we closely examined the WWF Monarch Butterfly that hatched earlier in the day.

112

Inside a few other cool things took place this afternoon:

Our WF Monarch chrysalis was moving back and forth on its own. It is clearly ready to hatch.

We took grapes off their stems in anticipation of making juice with them. Thank you Nickersons for the grapes and idea. (Would anyone really mind if we tried our hands at wine…just a thought:)

029

035

We had our regular snack, but I wanted to see how the kids felt about pumpkin smoothies and whether it would merit being a WF snack food. And I really wanted a pumpkin smoothie for myself! So I whipped up a batch and we did a taste test. Overwhelmingly, the children said they loved them. Kathy, Annie’s mom, asked that I post the recipe:

Pumpkin Smoothie Recipe024

1 c pure pumpkin

2 frozen bananas

1 c stonyfield organic french vanilla

1 1/2 ice cubes

1/2 tsp or so of allspice

and some sweetener to taste: for kids I use honey or pure maple syrup, for me I use some splenda because I’m sensative to sugar.

Fun day to be a WF teacher!

Have a wonderful evening,

Tami

WF Daily Explorations, Tuesday 9-20-11

Today we started our morning with paint: toes and water color pictures. Earlier this summer, Miss Melinda had promised the children that she would paint her toe nails sparkly purple at the end of the summer. True to her word she came to work yesterday with bright sparkly purple toes! Today she brought the nail polish and had some time with each willing child to paint their nails purple.

003

While Melinda was painting toes and fingers, six children at a time gathered at the art table for some water color painting. We talked about the proper technique to get the most color from the water color trays and how to control the paint on the paint brushes. Children also worked at writing their name on their paint pictures.

008

010

This morning was also YMCA swim lessons for the older children. This meant we had our maiden voyage in the Weehicle. It was a great adventure for the children to ride in the BIG new van!

014

019

While at swim today, Kai had an exceptionaKailly great swim day and met a few new swimming milestones: he dove 5 feet deep into the water to retrieve a diving ring (multiple times) AND he did a perfect form jump dive off the side of the pool. Both amazing accomplishments for a just turned 5 year old!

Miss Laurie is still out sick today. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Reminder: Tomorrow is farm on the new revised farm schedule. This means we have Kai, Owen, Jane, Macy, Annie, Ada, Simon, Alma, and Arleigh schedule to go. Please remember to arrive no later than 9:15 dressed in layered clothes. The forecast is 71 degrees with a 30% chance of showers.

For lunch today we had whole wheat toast, egg/hash brown casserole and watermelon.

Enjoy your day!

WWF, Daily Explorations, Tuesday 9.20.11

005

It was a beautiful morning at WWF! Some of us enjoyed the beautiful fall weather with a walk. We felt the texture of some fall leaves and crumbled them in our hands. For those of us that stayed behind, we played “Stop and Go” on the circle, and “Follow the leader.” Marta and Umi are mastering our bikes with training wheels. The children also enjoyed the slide today, and have mastered our log steps climbing back to the top. Markers were available in our outside art area. The children made a beautiful mural. The children enjoyed some books before lunch.

For a late morning snack, we had some delicious cucumber slices and rice cakes. Our lunch today was an egg and potato casserole with whole wheat toast and fresh peaches.

May your day be filled with the beautiful fall day and sunshine in your heart~

The Wee-hicle!

275

Some of you may have heard the wonderful news. This weekend we invested in a 12 passenger van (2007 Ford E350XL) for Wee Friends field trips. It can transport 10 children at a time and the car seats are all loaded and ready for us to take off! Those that have seen me each Tuesday loading the car seats in my Honda know how happy this makes me.

With the Weehicle, I have changed the WF farm schedule to take more children each week and you will find the revised schedule in your cubbies. The WWF trip stays the same. On most weeks I will take Melinda or Laurie with me to the farm, leaving just a few children to enjoy small group activities back at Wee Friends.

Good Afternoon!

Our Wee friends began their week with Ms. Jennifer at the Gymnastics Bus, they were all very excited for her to come back and get their bodies moving!

MG 8775 While the older children waited for their turn to go on the bus a group of girls built together a house for the ponies that had several ramps for them to jump off and bridges that connected the house to the shelves around it.

Umi and Nate have become good working partners, they are able to focus and peacefully accomplish major tasks. This morning they worked diligently on putting several puzzles together.

Together we read “Blue Hat, Green Hat” by Sandra Boynton in Spanish. We talked about how to say some basic clothing items and their colors in Spanish. After reading we moved to the table to design and cut clothes. Kai decided put his pieces together and make them into a paper doll, to this, we added labels to help ourselves remember the new words.

WWF Daily Explorations, Monday 9-19-11

Good Rainy Monday Morning!

Despite the rain, the WWFer’s stayed busy this morning. After some breakfast (whole wheat toast and applesauce), the children did some small group art at the easel and the table. Last Thursday, we wrote their names on the easel paper that they were cooperatively coloring. Today, Marta remembered and asked me to write her name again. We talked about the letters in everyone’s name as Miss Tami modeled the writing. The children used the easel paints, dot paints and markers for their project today.

031

029

Marta, Eleanor and Olivia played for quite awhile with the letter cookies. We brought out all of the small bowls and they filled them with the letter cookies. We talked about the different colors and letters as they arranged the cookies.

026

Housekeeping was very poplular with the girls today. We changed the housekeeping area arrangement to accommate this growing interest. We added 4 chairs to the little table (now a “dining table” instead of “coffee table”). We also added a small high chair for the baby dolls.

032

It was a busy morning so I didn’t get too many pictures taken! So here’s a few from Friday afternoon:

WWF, Sunshine on our shoulders, fall frolicking and friendships!

It has been a fabulous Friday at WWF. This morning we had story time followed by some dancing to Eleanor’s favorite, “We All Go Traveling By.” Sloane’s favorite is “Sunshine on my Shoulders,” and it seems as though the children really love to dance and use our maracas. Sloane now goes up to the basket on the shelf and points to them to let us know we forgot to bring them down! When the music is over, some of the children tell us, “more.” It is indeed music to our ears!

005

Max, Marta and Elizabeth were a terrific trio going down our hill on our Blue Dog Push cars. They are becoming quite the adventurous ones. They now put their legs up, and are really enjoying the speed. Sloane and Elizabeth had fun in our playhouse, and have developed a strong interest in their culinary skills. It is amazing what you can make on plates with pea gravel.

010 014

023

For lunch this morning, we had cereal and fresh fruit. Our late mid-morning snack consisted of rice cakes, an Ozzie favorite. For lunch today, we had ham, delicious squash, and oranges. We talked about fall colors. The children are excellent at singing our lunch song, and pushing their charis in when they are done.

We wish our little man, Peekay a speedy recovery, we miss him. Also, hugs to Miss Marty, who is trying so hard to feel better. She went home sick today, and hope she can recover this weekend.

May your weekend be filled with sunshine, great family memories, and perhaps, a win for the Irish!
