This morning, we continued weaving white strips of paper into black slotted construction paper, creating derby flags.

MG 9534

For further Mind Your Manners exploration, we played a sneezing game, using a spray bottle filled with water to explore what it feels like to be sneezed on! We talked about how germs spread during a sneeze and how to avoid spreading germs by covering your mouth or sneezing into your arm. Using glitter to “see” germs, we coughed into our hands that held glitter and then shook our friend’s hands sharing our glitter germs. We discussed the importance of coughing into your arm and/or washing your hands after a cough.

MG 9533

Using bath scrunchies and sponges, we washed our bodies while we sang and danced to “Bubbles in the Bathtub”. MG 9539

MG 9540 MG 9542

As always, we ended with a music meditation to calm and regroup!MG 9543

For lunch, we served pizza, peanut butter on whole wheat tortillas, green beans and bananas.

Have a terrific weekend and don’t forget, Wee Friends is closed Monday in honor of Memorial Day! See you Tuesday!

WWF Daily Explorations, Friday 5.27.11

Happy Friday! It is the end of another adventurous week at WeeWee Friends. This morning we did some water play and worked diligently on our matching cards. We had some outside time, then indoors for our infamous “Pizza Friday.” We also had some green beans and pineapple. This afternoon we spent time reading a book called “No Biting!” We also looked at a picture book about biting, pulling, pushing and kicking, and the responses we can give one of our friend’s if this happens to them. They were all really involved, and do believe this was, and will continue to be a great learning tool. Please let me know if you might find some of these resources helpful to you at home. Please join us in welcoming our new little wee-one on Tuesday! More information will be posted on our Message Board then. May your weekend be filled with lots of smiles, hugs and love! Regards, Lisa, Amy and Marty

WWF Daily Explorations, Thursday 5.22.11

It was the perfect morning for building a fort with some big blankets Miss Lisa brought in.  We went into our nap room,  constructed our cave, turned on our flashlights, and let our imaginations run wild!  We spotted a big brown bear up in the mountains, watched him celebrate a birthday with a blue birthday cake with panda bears in a tree.  We climbed mountains while singing songs, and had a campfire in our cave as we ate chicken, macaroni (a Finn favorite), green beans and milk.  We built a fire in the cave.  It was a great experience  to watch these little minds unfold.

Miss Amy and Lisa were able to take our friend’s outside for a little bit this morning.  It was time to unwrap the hoses and put out some fires, climb to the top of the log cabin house which also served as a firetruck.  Riding our push cars to the bottom of the hill appeared to be so much fun.  For those of us not old enough for that venture, they spent time just exploring our wonderful yard.

We enjoyed our couscous with scrambled eggs, broccoli, and watermelon and raisins for lunch.  Finn helped Miss Lisa wash and dry the table and towels to dry our hands.

Our dress up costumes continue to be a big hit.  Miss Paulina did some dancing and music with them yesterday afternoon and Miss Lisa played our version of ¨Simon Says¨with them.  Our ballerina and princess were especially beautiful.

Just a reminder that we will be closed from July 1 to July 11 as we enjoy a summer break with our families.

The creativity shared with us each day fills our hearts with much happiness.

Enjoy the day.

Regards,

Lisa, Paulina, Amy and Marty

MG 9516

This morning while younger WF were at tumbling a group of older friends continued to study pond water with the microscope. F.1.6 Use a variety of “scientific tools” (e.g., balance scales, magnifying glasses, measuring cups, food coloring) to investigate the environment and to gather information. F.1.7 Use age appropriate scientific equipment (e.g., magnifying glasses, thermometer, scales) when participating in scientific experiences.

Three Wee Friends have achieved letter/sound connections-the first stage on the road to “real” reading! Tami read Bob Books with these friends, practicing three letter words with the ‘a’ vowel. F.1.17 Generate sounds from letters. F.1.18 Recognize that words that look alike may sound alike.

MG 9502

We recently incorporated name place cards at the lunch table. Today, our friends used journal time to create their very own. F.4.7 Write from left to right. F.4.8 Write using pictures, letters, and words.

MG 9522

Using a racecar/track sound track and the steering wheel mounted to our hopscotch room wall, we stacked a few big blocks and drove race cars. F.2.4 Use various art forms such as dance, music, theater, and visual art as a vehicle for creative expression.

MG 9510

For lunch, we served whole wheat couscous with farm fresh scrambled eggs, watermelon/raisin salad and broccoli.

Have a great day!

WWF Daily Explorations, Wednesday 5.25.11

Caelan said it best this morning, ¨Rain, rain, go away, come again another day!¨  We were lucky enough to have some outside play time this morning before the rain.  Please know that Tami was continuously monitoring the weather situation.  In the event of a severe weather situation, we do proceed to the basement with a basket full of items with  snacks, bottles, diapers, flashlights, etc.  We will certainly ensure the safety of our children.

Once the rain started, we came in and made some more movies with our overhead projector and screen.  We are having so much fun with this.  It is fun to move the animals and different objects, and see our creations on the screen.  Some of us did Play-Doh and tracing stencils while others played in our new cardboard tunnel or listened to books. We also brought out our dress up costumes.  Umi was a ladybug, Finn was a lion, and Marta was a firefighter. Caelan wore the fire hat, and had ran around putting out his fair share of fires.

Alma helped Miss Lisa set the table today.  She did a great job with setting the plates, spoons and glasses out.  We had some more wonderful cuisine today prepared by our WWF Chef,  Miss Tami!  We had whole wheat rolls, fresh deli ham, mixed veggies, and watermelon.

Rain or shine, our days here at WWF always seem to have a ray of sunshine with the giggles, hugs, and love we receive from your child.

Make it a great day!

Lisa, Paulina, Amy and Marty

WF Daily Explorations Wednesday May 25

Wednesday May 25

What a busy day! We started the day with a science/math experiment that involved racing two cars at a time down two different ramps. One ramp was short and wooden and the other was long and made of cardboard, with a tube tunnel attached. We asked the question “The race cars will go down faster on which ramp?” We also changed the heights of the ramps, asking the same question.IMG 9477

Isaac brought a microscope to school! We examined pond water from The Res and well as our own WF aquarium. IMG 9479 IMG 9481

Anticipating the thunderstorm, we took the kids outside a little earlier this morning. When we came inside, we created art with gray, black and blue paper and chalk. Friends created incredible chalk drawings inspired by their feelings about rain and thunderstorms. IMG 9486

The rain passed and we had a little time before lunch so friends spent a few moments splashing mud puddles!MG 9498 MG 9500

Thank you Yonatan for the delicious chocolate cupcakes!! MG 9474We all enjoyed them!!!

For lunch today we served ham, mixed veggies, whole wheat toast and watermelon.

Have a great day!

WWF Daily Explorations, Tuesday 5.24.11

Yesterday afternoon we had so much fun coloring a mural and tracing our hand and footprints. This morning some of us were able to dip our feet in paint, and place our painted feet on the paper with Miss Lisa. For those that did not have a chance do to it today, we will do it first thing tomorrow morning. We will then brush on some glue and sand to look as though we have been walking on the beach. We are loving these warm, summer days!

Miss Paulina brought us a big box to crawl in. We used our imaginations to create a train tunnel and numerous other things. The children had a great time doing this, as well as playing with our train track we drew on long paper yesterday. We brought in our trains and even taped some cardboard over them to make tunnels.

While Miss Lisa and some of our friends helped to water our freshly planted flowers, Miss Paulina explored our garden with the children. We cannot wait to taste test some of our garden produce.

Ball rolling and climbing the log cabin house seemed to be the activity of choice outside today as well.

Marta was our kitchen helper. She helped Miss Lisa wash and dry the table, count and place our plates and spoons. We had chicken salad with apples, corn, and cantaloupe. What a great summer menu.

Miss Lisa read us a summer book about bumblebees and flowers, and then one of our favorites, ¨Busy Toes.¨

Wishing you a day full of sunshine!

Regards,

Lisa, Paulina, Amy and Marty

Happy Birthday, Yonatan! MG 9459Yonatan turns three today!

INDY 500 Study

Today we began a new study: race cars and the Indy 500. After an incredible brain storming meeting yesterday, our friends have come up with some incredible ideas for the study. We’ve promised a real derby race as a culminating event! MG 9460

In the truck room, we gathered all WF cars in a big pile on the floor. We sorted them in several different ways: race cars, cars of different colors, cars with stripes and cars with numbers. We counted the number of cars as we sorted them into piles. We explored different materials in the truck room that we could create ramps with. F.3.13 Talk about the cover and illustrations prior to the story being read.F.3.9 Sort a group of objects by more than one way. F.3.13 Categorize familiar objects by function and class. F.4.7 Sort a group of objects by more than one way. MG 9463

After lunch, a group of older friends gathered to listen to Twelve Little Race Cars by Scott Pruett and Indy Cars by Kate Riggs. We created a message board asking “What do we know about race cars?”

MG 9467

While our swimmers were at the Y for their weekly lesson, other friends sorted colored buttons into MG 9465

their corresponding colored bowl. F.3.12 Apply one to one correspondence with objects and people. F.4.6 Sort by one attribute (e.g., size, shape, color).

For lunch we served chicken apple salad, broccoli, whole wheat bread and cantelope.

Enjoy your day!

WF Farm, Monday, 5.23.11

Today, we spent our time at the farm investigating the marshy area of the pond.  We used nets to catch as a variety of living creatures:  a tadpole, several small fish, mosquito larvae, dragon fly larvae, a HUGE beetle (identified as a “toe biter” by Charlotte’s daughter Robin), several waterbugs, crawfish, fly larvae, snails in all shapes and sizes, a variety of marsh plants, and tons of small organisms that are just moving about in the water.

Another highlight was we were able to  investigate a baby dragonfly that had just hatched.  Because his wings were not dry yet, he let everyone examine him closely without flying away.  What a treat!

Unfortunately, I forgot the WF camera, so I have just a few pictures from my iphone to share.  But, the children really had a marvelous time scooping the water with their nets, sorting through their nets to see what they caught, and then sharing their catch with friends.  Also, this was a great chance for the children to assess how far they could step into the marsh without the water going over the top of their boots.  At some point, each child “filled” their boots with marsh water, but everyone handled the cold water and “dumping” their boots with good humor.

We brought back much of our marsh catch and placed it in the aquarium in the art room.  Ask your child to show you!

WWF Daily Explorations, Monday 5.23.11

Things are really beginning to bloom here at WWF!  We started our day with planting Marigolds in our flower boxes.  We had fun digging the holes, placing the flowers in them, and ¨packing¨ the dirt around them.  We then filled our watering cans and helped to water them.  We also watered our garden.   It was a lot of fun filling up our water cans and dumping the water all around us!

We are continuing to motor along on our tricycles and push cars.  Sunscreen was applied in abundance today, how nice that was!  Finally, some sun!

Finn helped to set the table for lunch.  We counted the number of friends we have here today  and counted as we placed the plates and spoons on the table.  The children really seem to be enjoying this.   We had chicken, rice, and corn with fresh fruit salad and carrot sticks.  We are all doing a great job with using our spoons and using the sign language we have learned thus far.

This afternoon we will be playing a matching and counting game with magnets.   Weather permitting, we will enjoy some more outside exploration time.

Please be sure to check your child´s cubby at the end of the day for wet clothing.  With the warmer weather, and lots of water play, we will most likely be changing clothes several times a day.

Enjoy the day, and we look forward to another great week here at WWF!

Lisa, Paulina, Marty and Amy
