Happy Sunny Tuesday!

This morning we engaged in a sensory experience with colored rice.  We were given a small and a large bowl, a regular spoon, a measuring spoon and a cup.  We enjoyed working on our pouring and scooping skills with the variety of items.  Eliza and Ben used 1/2 a plastic egg to scoop or put the rice in as well.  We loved it and were all engaged in the activity for quite some time.

Good Afternoon,

IMG_6327(2)IMG_6317(2)IMG_6322(1)

What a surprisingly beautiful day it has been! We took full advantage of the sunshine by getting lots of toys outside.

IMG_6296(2)IMG_6283(2)IMG_6265(2)

Yesterday we made some space playdough. We mixed quite a few colors together to try and achieve a black color. For stars, we used silver glitter. This morning we got to try out the playdough. We added some nocturnal animals to their trays to discuss how some animals are awake at night. We also included books about space and night creatures for them to explore. Rowan discovered that some stars are shaped into constellations. Hannah found a picture of all the planets that orbit the sun. She used her playdough to make the planet Saturn.

Several friends worked together today to create a table wide city complete with popsicle stick roads and block train stations, marinas, airports, fire stations and a few buildings that housed everything: vehicles,  aircraft and miraculously even ships.

IMG_6331(2)

In our sensory bin today we created a desert habitat for our lizards.  We used sticks, logs and rocks to create dens for them to live in.  We were reminded that desert animals usually hide during the day under the ground to stay cool and then come out at night.  A few friends asked if they could have some acorns for pretend food.  The used the ice cream scoop as a lizard feeder!

Breakfast: Cheerios & watermelon

Lunch: PB roll-ups on flatbread, green beans/cucumbers, pears & cheese slice

PM Snack: Whole wheat bagel w/ cream cheese & cheese sticks

Wee Sprouts: Green beans & cucumbers

Good Afternoon!

This morning we placed several of our long hollow wood blocks together to create a walkway for us to climb, crawl, sit or walk across.

IMG_6942IMG_6946IMG_6952IMG_6963

Then several of us were engaged with our beanie baby animals.  We were busy exploring them.  We engaged with them in the cube, fed them in the rocking chair or just sat on the carpet holding them.

IMG_6956IMG_6959IMG_6953

We then headed into the kitchen to create our own watercolor painting.  We first drew with markers on our papers.  We then used a paint brush to spread water onto the colors and watched as they bled onto our papers to create watercolors.

IMG_6979IMG_6980IMG_6981IMG_6986IMG_6982

Eleanor explored a shaker tambourine instrument, one of her spinning toys and gave us big happy smiles.

Good Monday Afternoon!

The rain was coming down today, but it didn’t stop lots of fun activities from going on inside. We had puzzles going on throughout the morning. Ms. Linsey pulled out some dominos and miniature trucks for road construction. She also changed our sensory bin from water to rice. Our friends created all sorts of tube designs for their rice to flow through in the bin. Some of our friends wanted to paint, so watercolors came out for some amazing creations. There’s never a shortage of learning and exploration going on at WF!

Hey There Friday!

HAPPY 5TH BIRTHDAY MILLIE!

IMG_6013IMG_6007IMG_6005

Our MACK this week asked for our WF to “demonstrate caring…for others.” Our large group was asked to make some friendship bread (a.k.a. peanut butter bread) for the whole class. We discussed how if we were to just add one ingredient to the bowl, it wouldn’t turn out as bread. We need all sorts of ingredients for it to come together into something delicious. It’s that way with friends. It takes all sorts of friends to make the world a better place. We all need one another to come together and show kindness and compassion. I see this already in each one of them. You should be proud of these incredible human beings you’re raising.

IMG_5977IMG_5980IMG_6024

We continued with terrariums today.  Since the interest in snakes was very high yesterday, we tried dry desert snake habitats.  We used drift wood, rocks and desert plants.  Our wet terrarium was set up in the sensory bin so we could make comparisons.  We talked about the needs of reptiles vs  amphibians in the habitats in which they live.  We leaned that amphibians have smooth skin that dries out easily so they need to live in and around water.  They also need water to lay their eggs.  We learned that reptiles like snakes have protective scales and lay their eggs on land so they can survive in desert habitats without their skin drying out.

IMG_6030IMG_6016IMG_6043IMG_6056

Another interest that has been strong lately is making books so today in art center we combined art and language in a book making project.  We used letter stamps and picture stamps to create our books.  We could also make our own illustrations in combination with the print.  We talked about our books with our teachers and added our title and the name of the author.

Older friends could do all of the writing themselves using inventive spelling.  Younger friends practiced writing their names and wrote as much as they could.  They have all been very interested in writing lately no matter what their age.

Breakfast: Brown rice cakes w/ PB & bananas

Lunch: Ham sandwiches on whole wheat bread, carrot chips, bananas

PM Snack: PB bread & fruit popsicles

Wee Sprouts: Carrot chips, bell pepper, & cucumber

Good Afternoon!

This morning we began positioning our bodies into several yoga poses.  We did downward dog and dead bug.  We then listened to versions of Animal Action by Greg and Steve and moved our bodies like animals.

IMG_6858IMG_6860IMG_6862IMG_6863

We then walked on the stepping stones, had a teacher read to us, used our imaginative skills while playing with the Little People with a friend and engaged with babies and dress up scarves.

IMG_6874IMG_6875IMG_6878IMG_6881

We then headed into the kitchen to engage with playdough.  We used many tools to flatten it and cut it.  We watched to see the designs and holes appear as we used them.  We were also given golf tees to enhance our experience.  Several friends used their imaginative skills to pretend the golf tees were candles and sang Happy Birthday to their friends.

IMG_6896IMG_6899IMG_6895IMG_6897IMG_6898IMG_6900IMG_6902

While the rest of us were engaged with playdough, Eleanor enjoyed crinkling her book while sitting in her chair with us in the kitchen.

Good Afternoon!

Today, in our sensory bin we did a water systems project. We were able to experiment with pipes and connectors to build different water systems.  We tested the pipe systems pouring water through and observing how the direction of water flow was affected.  We could pour our water in different ways as well.  We could used measuring cups and  funnels as well as using eye droppers to make the water flow through the pipes at different speeds.  We had some pipes with an on and off lever as well.  We were able to look inside the pipe as the lever was turned and see how water flow could be started and stopped in real plumbing systems.  We learned through trial and error how water always flows to the lowest point.

IMG_5875IMG_5898IMG_5925

At the round table we had a terrarium habitat building activity for snakes, frogs and turtles.  Many of us have been itching to play with water and gravel outside so we created an activity inside that would (hopefully) indulge this  interest.  We used gravel, water, silk plants and rocks to build habitats for our amphibians and reptiles.  We ended up having an interesting conversation as a group at this table about how snakes can unhinge their jaws in order to swallow their food whole!  When they are finished they must yawn in order to put their jaw back in place!

Breakfast: Corn Chex & strawberries/banana

Lunch: Brown rice w/ beef & cheese, peppers/cucumber, & honeydew melon/banana

Happy 1st day of March.

Today we engaged in a painting activity with blue, red and yellow tempera paint.  We worked on mixing new colors using a variety of brushes.  We painted with a toothbrush, a skinny and wide paint brush.  We also used white paint to see how white paint makes the colors lighter on our papers.  Several of our friends shared they were creating paintings for their siblings either in our class or the preschool class.

IMG_6827IMG_6828IMG_6829IMG_6835IMG_6836IMG_6838

We then headed outside to enjoy the beautiful sunshine and warmer weather.  We were busy riding or pushing the bikes, pushing a cart or digging in the sandbox.

Hello Sunshine!

IMG_5768IMG_5807

We conducted a popped corn and water experiment today.  One of our friends asked while eating a popped corn snack what would happen if he put his popped corn in water.  We did this experiment to find out.  We were asked what we thought would happen.  Some thought the popped corn would break apart, others though it would blow up.  We were asked if we thought the popped corn would displace the water like the rocks did.  Some of us thought yes and others thought no.  As we did the experiment some of us noticed that the popped corn made a hissing sound.  We learned that the popped corn did not displace the water because it was full of air and the water filled the air space.  We also learned that the hissing sound was made as the air rushed out of the popped corn.

K.M.1 Make direct comparisons of the …capacity…and recognize which object… holds more.

Our Kindergarteners were given four measuring cups/tools. They filled each one of them with their purple water until it reached the one cup line. We discovered that the denominator gave us the clue as to how many cups it would take. They recorded their observations in their journals.
