Good Afternoon!

Kindergarten sign in challenged all three children this morning as it required to change sounds and letters in words to make new words. Today, we focused on substituting sounds and letters to make a new word. For example, children had to take the word ‘tin’ and remove the t. They could replace it with another letter, essentially finding a rhyming word for ‘tin’ and writing the new letter into the space (pin for example).

K.RF.3.5: Add, delete, or substitute sounds to change words.

After we read Sassafras for K/PREK1 group, we used our two hands for solving addition problems. Each addition problem had a total of ten so we had to find the missing number. I had children hold up six fingers for the first problem. I asked, “How many fingers are hiding that help us make ten?”. Children counted the hiding fingers and said “Four!”. We did this for every addition problem and were able to find the missing number.

K.CA.4: Find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number for any number from 1 to 9 (e.g., by using objects or drawings), and record the answer with a drawing or an equation.

Every child came to the art table to explore painting with a feather as opposed to a paint brush. Children made several comments about how different it was painting with a feather and how “soft” is was.

It was a beautiful morning outside! We got out the balls, hoop, and bikes out which were occupied all morning long. Children spent the first 15 minutes outside running around, exerting some energy before they found an activity that peaked their interest.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we engaged with the pianos and xylophones.  We all made beautiful sounds for us to hear while playing music together.

IMG_3501IMG_3500IMG_3499IMG_3498IMG_3502

We then headed into the kitchen to finger paint.  We used the colors; green, yellow and red to make our beautiful paintings.  Miss Bekah also shared with us that the colors we were using were also colors of apples.

IMG_3521IMG_3520IMG_3523IMG_3525IMG_3527

Happy Monday!

**Wee Friends will be closed Thursday, November 24 and Friday, November 25 for Thanksgiving break.

The three kindergarteners kicked off their week by filling in numbers that were missing. They were asked, “What number comes after 9 but before 11?”.

Not only were they able to identify the number that was one more or one less than a given number but they also worked on number formation.

K.NS.3: Find the number that is one more than or one less than any whole number up to 20.

IMG_9722(1)IMG_9725(1)

Our kindergarten activity guided our K/PREK1 group activity. I put five number strips onto the chalkboard. Each group member was given an orange number. I asked, “What number comes before 19?”. Each group member had to look at their number to see if they had the correct missing number! Once they identified that the number missing was theirs, they came up to the chalkboard and taped their number into the missing spot.

K.NS.3: Find the number that is one more than or one less than any whole number up to 20.

Happy Friday!

We began our morning by reading books on the reading step: Paige read to her baby bear (covered under a blanket) and Arthur read a book by himself. We took care of our baby dolls, stacked plastic rings around our neck, and shared housekeeping toys with our friends.

We then headed to the kitchen to play with pegs and pegboards that Ms.Tina brought out for us. Paige stacked pegs and said she was making “a tower.” Emily said that her stack of pegs was a “tower mountain” and that it looked like a “rainbow.” Eliza and Ben enjoyed getting to explore the foam pegboards with tools like a hammer and a rolling pin.

Miss Bekah invited us to the kitchen to watch how the rice is made for our lunch. We got to see and smell all the different seasonings that go into the pot of rice.

IMG_3419IMG_3420IMG_3426IMG_3425IMG_3418

After watching how our rice was made, Miss Bekah gave us each some playdough for some sensory play. We squished it and used a variety tools to manipulate it, like plastic scissors and popsicle sticks.

Good Afternoon!

Kindergarten sign in consisted of children looking at three different item configurations and see how many items were in each group without counting! All three kindergarteners were able to do this by adding the top row and the bottom row together to find the total! “There’s five smiley faces on the top and five on the bottom so there’s 10!” said one kindergartener.

K.NS.6: Recognize sets of 1 to 10 objects in patterned arrangements and tell how many without counting.

IMG_9546(1)IMG_9539(1)

In K/PREK1 group, we read ‘Max and the Tag Along Moon’. After we finished the story, we identified the author and talked about where we may be able to find this book in the library. We chatted about the authors last name, which started with a C. Daniel said, “We’ll find it with the C’s since his last name starts with it!”.

We also did another run through of our counting sheet where each friend took a turn counting by 10’s up to 100.

K.1.19: Learn and apply knowledge of alphabetical order (first letter) when using a classroom or school library/media center.

There are so many benefits to a multi-age classroom. Rowan explored the role of ‘helper’ and ‘leader’ today as she helped guide younger peers in several areas of the classroom environment this morning. She was at the art table with several friends, including a three year old peer who was wanting to write ‘mom’ and ‘dad’ on his finished art creation. Rowan excitedly offered to spell ‘dad’ on his creation. Later on in the morning, she and another three year old peer lay looking at a story where she pointed out key events in the story as well as practiced telling the story based on the illustrations.

Good Afternoon!

Kindergarteners worked with four books for their sign in. We talked specifically about books in libraries and how they’re sorted by the librarian. When Daniel was asked if he knew how the books were sorted in a library, he answer, “By the authors name I think!”.

We looked at all four books as well as the author of each book and wrote down the last names. Then, using their knowledge of alphabetical order, they put the books into the correct order that you’d find them in the library!

K.1.19: Learn and apply knowledge of alphabetical order (first letter) when using a classroom or school library/media center.

IMG_9493

After we read, “Giraffe’s Can’t Dance’ from our MACK collection, each K/PREK1 group member was given their counting sheet. I counted to 100 by ten’s first as a guide and then as children felt comfortable, they raised their hand and gave it a go!

K.NS.1: Count to at least 100 by ones and tens.

IMG_7643IMG_7644

Various sized cardboard tubes were brought up from the basement to use in habitrail. A group of children worked together to create a track that started halfway up the habitrail and went down to the ground. They used a variety of cars to see if the cars made it all the way to the end without getting stuck.

IMG_9469(1)IMG_9480

What a gorgeous morning it was! Daniel and Bo spent time collecting leaves from the backyard environment and proceeded to make a leaf pile on the table down at the bottom of the yard while Rowan and several friends exerted some energy using the scooters.
