Good Afternoon!

A child lead project emerged this morning in the block area this morning.  William and Hannah built a very large tower and had the idea to use tape in order to stabilize the building.  This sparked the beginning of a “recycled cardboard and tape building project.”  That way William and Hannah’s idea could play out through experimentation.  William and Hannah lead the way as the majority of our Wee friends spent time building a large system of roads and houses spanning the entire building rug.  They built furniture for the houses and even a sewer system leading away from the “town bathroom” Smile

Happy last day of July!

This morning the friends enjoyed choosing a book from the bookshelf and having a teacher read to them.

IMG_0924(3)IMG_0927(3)IMG_0930(3)

Several friends engaged in the activities on the Zany Zoo Activity cube.  One friend moved the beads across the wire and the duck through the maze, another friend opened the doors to see the animal behind it and then closed it, and Charlotte spun the alphabet letters to see what picture matched each of the letters.

IMG_0934(3)IMG_0935(3)

We worked on stacking our color beads and wooden loose parts onto our stacker.  Eleanor also rolled her ball down the ball maze.

IMG_0937(3)IMG_0941(3)IMG_0950(3)

We also engaged in several music activities.  A friend asked for the rhythm sticks and we marched around the front circle tapping our sticks to Ants Go Marching.  We also sat and tapped our sticks on the floor to a beat. We then made our own beautiful sounds playing the pianos and xylophones for everyone to hear.

IMG_0982(3)IMG_0999(3)IMG_0992(3)IMG_0965(3)IMG_0966(3)IMG_0968(2)IMG_0964(3)

We then headed outside to enjoy some fresh air.  We enjoyed our usual favorite activities; however, today at the art table we made dot pictures with our dot markers as well as the markers.  Miss Bekah also cooled us down with a cool mist spray and we loved it.

Good Afternoon!

This morning in the art center, we made Olympic torches out of paper.  Our older friends learned how to make them first,  and then taught our younger friends.  After showing a younger friend how to make the torch, an older friend stuck by to help and answer questions.  Our big kids made great teachers!  Teaching others is the best way to learn.  The younger kids love working with an older friend as well and learning from them!

IMG_7816(4)IMG_7809(2)IMG_7820(4)IMG_7846(3)IMG_7802(3)

This afternoon, our second Olympic event of the week took place: the long jump! Our older friends showed their younger peers how to bend their knees and jump! Most of our jumps turned into cute bunny hops or energetic skips! We love moving our body whenever possible!

IMG_7878(4)IMG_7877(2)IMG_7879(3)

As William played with clay outside today he was watched by a young admirer who was enamored with his ceramics skills!  Having the multiage aspect of our program has mutual developmental benefits!  We try to foster the “older kids teaching the younger kids” dynamic when ever possible!

Good Afternoon!

Our friends started off their morning by taking turns to crawl through a tunnel. We also danced with silk scarves to Shake Your Sillies Out.

IMG_0852(2)IMG_0853(2)IMG_0864(1)IMG_0866(3)IMG_0867(3)IMG_0868(2)

We then made our way into the kitchen to paint with two different kinds of brushes, a flat one and a round one. We painted with red and blue paint,  and our friends watched as the two colors mixed on their papers to make purple.

IMG_0873(3)IMG_0874(3)IMG_0875(3)IMG_0876(3)

We then headed outside to play in the sandbox; watching the sand go down the blue chute or put it into different containers.  We also rode the teeter-totter and Eleanor engaged in a new sensory experience, exploring clay with a variety of tools.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we were engaged in a variety of activities.  We went on a bear hunt with our stuffed teddy bears, cooked in the play kitchen and used our imaginative skills with the doctor tools to use in our cooking, looked through our color pyramid squares and built a tower with the BounceBlocks to stand on at the habi-trail.

IMG_0719(3)IMG_0725(3)IMG_0740(3)IMG_0742(3)IMG_0746(3)IMG_0751(3)IMG_0764(3)IMG_0762(3)

We then headed into the kitchen to engage in a loose parts activity.  Our trays contained dominoes, pom-poms, a wood cup and bowl, a spoon, tongs and a whisk.  Pom-poms were placed inside of our whisk and we worked our fine motor skills using our fingers to pull them out.  We also worked to strengthen our hand muscles as we used tongs to pick up the pom-poms.  Charlotte, Eleanor and another friend used their imaginative skills and turned their dominos into telephones.  Charlotte and Eleanor both said, “hello” into them.

IMG_0775(3)IMG_0774(3)IMG_0778(3)IMG_0782(3)IMG_0783(3)IMG_0784(3)IMG_0785(3)IMG_0789(2)

Charlotte asked to play with the shaker instruments.  We all enjoyed shaking and making music together.

IMG_0800(2)IMG_0801(3)IMG_0805(3)IMG_0799(2)IMG_0795(1)

We then headed outside.  We were engaged in water play with the sea animals, observing and feeling the texture of a leaf in our hands, drawing with markers and scooping rocks inside the climbing house.

IMG_0810(3)IMG_0812(2)IMG_0816(3)IMG_0823(3)IMG_0832(3)IMG_0820(3)IMG_0825(3)IMG_0826(3)IMG_0830(3)IMG_0840(3)

Good Afternoon!

The Olympics were a hot topic among Wee Friends this morning!  This week we will be working on projects and playing games that revolve around the “Olympics” theme since many of our young friends have been watching the games at home.  It will be a fun week!

This morning the “Wee Friends” Gymnastics team worked on the balance beam!

IMG_7726(4)IMG_7648

The science area was turned into an Olympic stadium where our first game of the week took place: the bean bag toss!

Children got a chance to throw three bean beans into bins that were different amounts. The closest bin was worth 1 point, the middle bin was worth 2 points, and the bin furthest away was worth 3 points. We kept track of everyone’s scores and at the end, Hannah helped me tally up everyone’s totals!

IMG_7688IMG_7700IMG_7711IMG_7722IMG_7721

We created “Olympic Rings” paintings in the art center this morning.  Some of us used our Olympic colors to make the symbol they recognized from the games.  Others used the rings to get creative with their artwork in their own unique way.  It was up to our kids to determine how they wanted to use the materials.

IMG_7723(4)IMG_7729(4)IMG_7687(4)

Breakfast– Whole wheat toast with butter and fresh apples.

Lunch– Whole wheat pasta with shredded turkey, fresh plums/pineapple, and fresh green beans/cucumber.

PM snack– Whole milk yogurt with graham crackers.

Happy Friday!

We celebrated Miss Jena’s last day today.  She will be moving south next week to continue her masters.  We wish her well but will miss all the stories and snuggles!  We are so grateful for the time we spent with her at Wee Friends.

IMG_7527(4)

We were engaged with an open ended activity in the art center using a few simple ingredients: playdough, sticks and beads.  There were many different ways the kids chose to use the materials.  Some made patterns while others sorted them into warm and cool colors.  Some friends made sculptures, birthday cakes and even a turtle. A few kiddos wanted to work together and others independently.  With so many possibilities, our friends stayed with their projects all morning!

IMG_7533(3)IMG_7555(3)IMG_7558(3)IMG_7573(3)IMG_7541(4)
