This morning we engaged in a new sensory experience with putty.  We worked to strengthen our hand muscles as we pulled to stretch the putty and squeeze it in our hands.

Happy Friday and first day of Spring!

This morning, a few friends stacked bounce blocks along the habitrail railing. They moved their stacks to be next to each other and climbed to the top!

IMG_1164(2)IMG_1166(2)IMG_1165(2)IMG_1167(2)IMG_1168(2)

Then, we built with Waffle blocks, working on connecting them together Diana and Rose joined us, exploring all the pieces.

IMG_1156(1)IMG_1157(2)IMG_1159(2)IMG_1171(2)IMG_1173(2)

In the kitchen, we drew with markers. Friends swapped colors with each other before filling their papers with lines and dots.

IMG_1187(2)IMG_1188(2)IMG_1192(2)IMG_1191(2)IMG_1195(2)

Happy Friday!

There has been a lot of class interest in reading our collection of “Anansi the Spider” stories, which are retellings of old African folktales about a trickster spider.  We offered a project at the art center for older kids to make their favorite character out of pipe cleaners.  Kids could also make his web using a paper plate and yarn.  Some kids wanted to to take the project further and decorate Anansi’s legs with beads.  Others went on to make other characters from the story like Hyena and Little Bush Deer.  Some kids even enjoyed playing with their homemade characters, acting out the stories through imaginative play.

PREK2: We enjoyed some relaxing yoga poses and deep breathing in group today.  We read “The Family Book” which talked about different kinds of families.  At the end of group we counted how many people were in each of our families and wrote it on the board.

*REMINDER: Wee Friends will be closed Friday, April 3.

Good Afternoon–

This morning we offered a “marble runs in water” activity in order to explore water movement, gravity and the basic foundation of applied physics.  We knew that several kids had a strong interest in these kinds of hands on experimental building activities.  We found however, that many kids who normally don’t spend time building, became interested in this activity and were able to explore skills that were new to them. Projects like this build the foundations of scientific reasoning through play.  Activities like pouring, damning and moving water through pipes teach the fundamentals of physics and math while also fostering social skills and sensory stimulation for young minds.

Happy St Patrick’s Day!

We spent lots of time this morning with Magna Tiles! Friends began pretending their large Magna-Tiles were computers.

Then, we brought Magna-Tiles into the kitchen and played on the light table. We looked at the colors of the Magna-Tiles and made houses.

Good Afternoon!

Our PREK1 friends came to the sign in board today where they were asked to find their name and identify the number on the back of their card. Once they identified their number, they looked for the corresponding arrangement with their number. We started talking about how we can separate the configuration and add the numbers instead of counting all of the items. For example, Hannah’s configuration had two rows of 5. So we added 5 and 5 together to get 10 instead of counting every shape.

K.NS.6: Recognize sets or 1 to 10 objects in patterned arrangements and tell how many without counting.

This morning we took advantage of some indoor gross motor activities to get our bodies moving.  On the building rug, kids danced with scarves and played musical instruments.

IMG_1571IMG_1568\IMG_1585IMG_1620IMG_1574IMG_1597

Other kids made obstacle courses and balanced on bounce blocks.

IMG_1602IMG_1503

We added some new materials to the art center to experiment with like paper plates and yarn.  The kids came up with many creative solutions.
