Good Afternoon!
Each kindergarten boy got to pick a book from the following choices: ‘Caps For Sale’, ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’, and ‘The Story of Ferdinand’. They worked with one specific book as well as three specific illustrations in that book. For each illustration, I gave them options of authors words that matched the illustration. They had to figure out if the authors words and illustrations matched!
K.RL.4.1: Describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear.

For K/PREK1, we read ‘The Story of Ferdinand’. We filled in our chart after we were done reading it and talked about who did what job in the creation of this story.
Afterwards, we identified the shapes on the paper. Once children identified the shape, they told me how many sides the shape had as well as how many vertices. After the square, James raised his hand and shared, “The numbers are the same for each shape!”. I asked the group if they thought this trend would continue for the rest of the shapes and they all said yes! Sure enough, we found out that the number of sides and the number of vertices matched for each shape!
K.RL.3.2: Define the role of the author and illustrator of a story in telling the story.
K.G.2: Compare shapes using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, and parts (e.g., number of sides, length of sides, and vertices).

Our welcome activity was a fine motor activity in which children used metal tongs to place colorful puff balls onto a wooden rainbow. Some children placed the puff balls sporadically onto the rainbow while others sorted by color. Two three year old’s were doing this activity together and one chose to do each arch with a certain color. He shared how he did this with his peer who was eager to try out his way of doing it.
