We then headed into the habi-trail area to explore the balls and toss them into a basket.  We also got the big plastic blocks out to sit in and row our boats.

IMG_1341IMG_1344IMG_1346IMG_1339IMG_1348

We then headed outside to go down the slide, explore some new toys in the sandbox, scoop with our hands in the rocks and see our older siblings.

Happy Friday!

**Reminder: Wee Friends is closed Monday, September 5th for Labor Day.

Our two kindergarteners used clothespins to clip the number of syllables for each clip card. For example, there was a picture of an elephant. Bo used the clapping method to come to the conclusion that the word elephant has three syllables in it so he clipped the number 3.

K.RF.3.2: Orally segment words into syllables.

IMG_5896

We continued this activity into K/PREK1 and introduced it to Rowan, Millie, and James. Each child chose two cards to do and with the help of their peers, were able to clip the correct number of syllables!

K.RF.3.2: Orally segment words into syllables.

IMG_5946IMG_5943IMG_5938

As we head into fall in the next couple of weeks, Rowan and James talked about what theme they wanted to introduce into the housekeeping area. They thought about farms and an apple orchard so they both grabbed clip boards and drew diagrams on what they wanted to add into the housekeeping space.

Miss Tami brought in foam footballs for us to use so this morning, three buckets were placed outside at various distances. Children took four footballs and tried to throw the footballs into the buckets! It required quite a lot of concentration and focus!

Good Afternoon!

This morning a friend asked to read the book, “sunshine” because it has a sunshine on the cover.  The book is titled May There Always Be Sunshine!, by Jim Gill.  We read that book, along with a variety of teacher books.

IMG_1214IMG_1215

Miss Bekah then went into the kitchen to make the rice for lunch.  Emily asked, “can I watch you?”  So all the friends came into the kitchen and sat at the table to watch Miss Bekah add the rice, water and different spices to our rice before she placed the pot in the rice cooker.

IMG_1216IMG_1217IMG_1227IMG_1218

We then engaged our fine motor and hand-eye coordination skills with the color shape stackers and object permanence boxes.

Good Afternoon!

Two of our kindergarteners completed sign in before heading outside. They were asked to count a specific number of colored puff balls using their one to one correspondence skills: eight yellow balls, seven red balls, and eleven blue balls. One of our kindergarteners ended up having nine red balls and said aloud, “Oh I have nine red balls. I need to get rid of two.”—doing subtraction without even knowing it! Smile

K.NS.4: Perform one-to-one correspondence tasks.

We read, ‘The Gruffalo’ in K/PREK1 group. Before we started reading, I asked the group to pay attention to the characters in the story because I was going to be asking about them when we started our activity. This lead into a quick conversation about what ‘characters’ are in a story.

After the story was done, children worked together to name all of the characters in the book. We started going through each character to see how many syllables each word had. James, who was gone on Tuesday when we did our first syllable lesson, asked what syllables were. Since he wasn’t here for our syllable group lesson, friends gave him a quick crash course using our names to explain what syllables are! It was a great re-teaching experience where children became the teacher. We learned that most of the characters have one syllable in their name!

K.RF.3.2: Orally segment words into syllables.

Rowan showed interest in gems and rocks earlier in the week so Miss Kim went down into the basement and brought up the rock collections. Children were able to use a magnifying glass to look closely at each rock. As they looked at a specific rock, children were told the names of each rock as well as where they came from—most came from volcanoes!

It was a beautiful morning! We’ve been spoiled with great weather the last few weeks. A group of older boys gathered in the housekeeping area where they used a collection of nature including mulch and purple flowers.

Good Afternoon! The last day of August.  The month seemed to fly by.

This morning we were all engaged up in the front area of the classroom.  We built with Magna-Tiles,  looked at the objects inside the Peek-a-Blocks and stacked them and drove the truck and train cars back and forth on the carpet.

IMG_1166IMG_1167IMG_1170IMG_1178IMG_1171IMG_1174IMG_1168

We then headed outside.  The bikes were out for us to enjoy riding down the hill and several friends were busy digging in the sandbox.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we did several activities with our big plastic blocks.  First we pretended they were boats as we listening to the song, Row, Row, Row Your Boat and acted out the motions of rowing with our arms as we sang the song.  We then flipped over our blocks and pretended we were riding on a train.  We read the book Magic Train Ride by Sally Crabtree while sitting on the train.  Miss Bekah then asked us where we would like to go on our train ride?  A friend said, “my house.”  Paige said, “momma’s house.” Emily said,  “the zoo.”  They had some great ideas of places they would like to go.

IMG_1100IMG_1103IMG_1114IMG_1117

We then headed outside to enjoy the refreshing air and sunshine along with some of our favorite activities.

Good Afternoon!

Syllables was the focus of kindergarten sign in today! First, we talked about what syllables are before discussing the two ways that we can count syllables: clapping and hand on chin.

Together, we counted the syllables in the word apple before they tackled the three following words with little teacher assistance: banana, hand, and table.

We read the story, ‘The Listening Walk’, in K/PREK1 group. This week, we start our 12 week MACK (Mindful Attention with Curiosity and Kindness Curriculum) curriculum. This is a curriculum that encompasses the whole child so we’re not only meeting the cognitive needs to our child through the FAB’s but the social emotional needs as well. We have a library of books that speak specifically to the MACK curriculum. They are broken down into five topics: mindfulness, emotions, acts of kindness and friendship, peace and diversity, and gratitude. Our MACK for the week is:

Children will learn that mindfulness involves paying attention on purpose in the present moment with curiosity and kindness. Children will use their sense to describe what they are feeling and seeing in the world around them.

Afterwards, we continued to explore syllables by bringing our older preschool friends into the mix. For group, we used our names to start the conversation of syllables. Children chose to use the clapping method or the hand to chin method to see how many syllables were in each group members name! We found out that we are quite the two syllable word bunch!

K.RF.3.2: Orally segment words into syllables.

IMG_5670

Several friends explored the welcome activity which was an open ended activity revolving around shapes! Daniel chose to use the shapes to make a picture, having to look specifically for certain shapes. Other children held the shapes in their hand, placing them strategically on the wooden board.

IMG_5603IMG_5619

Miss Kim set up an art exploration that offered children the chance to use a variety of materials such as pinecones, feathers, beans, leaves, and crinkly paper. Children were able to use these materials as they wish so everyone’s creation look quite different!

Reminder:  We will be closed next Monday, September 5th in observance of Labor Day. Thank you.

Good Afternoon!

A friend was working on her forward roll.  Several friends went over to join her and practice doing them.

IMG_1045IMG_1048IMG_1046IMG_1051

We then engaged with our stacking cups and shape sorters.  We worked our fine motor, hand-eye coordination, color recognition  and sorting by size skills as we worked stacking them back together in the cup or on the pole of the stacker.

IMG_1058IMG_1053IMG_1042IMG_1054

We then headed into the kitchen to draw with markers on a piece of cardboard. Paige shared with Miss Bekah that her markers weren’t working.  They were working, so Miss Bekah explained to her and the rest of her friends that the colors do not show up as bright because the cardboard is brown which is different than the white paper we usually use.

IMG_1061IMG_1060IMG_1063IMG_1069IMG_1059

We then headed outside to run around the circle, go down the slide, play with the sea animals and trucks at the tables and watch the trash truck empty our trash bin.

IMG_1070IMG_1074IMG_1082IMG_1085IMG_1080

Breakfast:  Whole grain wheat toast with butter and cinnamon/sugar mixture and fresh oranges.

Lunch:  Whole grain wheat pasta with black beans, fresh apple slices and cucumbers.
