Good Afternoon!

Our PREK1 friends came to sign in today where we took a stab at subtraction equations today! Yesterday, we started working with addition problems so today, we introduced subtraction. We used manipulatives on a tray to help each child solve their own subtraction problem. Several children were able to not only identify each number in their equation but also write their total!

K.CA.1-2: Solve real-world problems, objects, or drawings that involve addition and subtraction within 10. Demonstrate the equation (e.g 5=3+2 and 5=4+1).

Our PREK1 children have been busy journaling lately! There are so many interesting drawings and our letter identification and letter sound knowledge has only made our journal experience that much more interesting! This increase in being able to hear sounds is linked to a few friends being able to explore and start to read our BOB books—YAY! As we journaled today, Eliza was starting to write her description with help from a teacher and Arthur, quietly under his breath, would say what letters he heard in her description! They all learn from each other every day during these authentic experiences.

Today, there was a lot of building exploration throughout the classroom.  Kids used a wide variety of materials to build imaginative structures to play with… or in.  Many of the little building projects were based around teamwork in a collective effort to create play spaces.  Building projects are excellent for kids.  While they play, they are building their executive planning skills, a higher thinking ability using the prefrontal cortex.  Kids are also able to practice the creative side of high level thinking as they problem solve and imagine possibilities to create.  They build fine motor, gross motor and social skills as well.  There is so much development happening during this kind of play!

IMG_5114IMG_5104IMG_5084IMG_5071

The book making projects continued as our young author/illustrators came up with more creative ideas for stories, practicing their language arts and fine motor skills in a creative and meaningful way.

IMG_5067IMG_5065IMG_5062

We even enjoyed a little life science as several friends explored our “metamorphosis cards”.  One bright young friend asked why monarch caterpillars have antennae on both sides of their bodies, so we got to talk about animal defenses and camouflage which they use to fool predators.  New information sticks when lessons arise naturally driven by questions kids ask.

Happy Monday!

This morning we engaged with the balls tossing them to Miss Bekah and rolling them on the floor.  We also enjoyed wearing the color rings as necklaces.

IMG_5502IMG_5504IMG_5505IMG_5496IMG_5494

We then headed into the kitchen to engage in a sensory experience with playdough.  We were using our hammers to pound the dough to make it flat, used a craft stick to cut it and held it with our hands.

IMG_5507IMG_5510IMG_5511IMG_5506

We then headed outside to engage in a variety of our favorite activities.

Good Afternoon!

A few vacation reminders:

Wee Friends will be closed:

Thursday, November 27th and Friday, November 28th for Thanksgiving Break

Monday, December 22nd through Friday, January 2nd for Winter Break

_______________________________________________________________________________________

We kicked off our week by completing a PREK1 sign in where we focused on addition problems. Each friend came up to the board where they located their name, identified the two numbers in their equation if they were able, and added their two numbers together using gem manipulatives. A few children were able to write their total without any assistance while others asked to have their number dotted to help them!

K.CA.1-2: Solve real-world problems, objects, or drawings that involve addition and subtraction within 10. Demonstrate the equation (e.g 5=3+2 and 5=4+1).

The theme for the day seemed to be reading and writing books!  In the art center the kids completely led a book making project.  Some of our kids are becoming quite skilled at sounding out words.  A couple of kids tried some early reading in our BOB books and were able to sound out some words.  How exciting!

Good Afternoon!

We continued on exploring numbers and the order in which they occur! Each PREK1 friend came up to the sign in board where they found their name and worked on identifying all of the numbers on their specific number line. There was one number missing so once they figured out what number was missing, they had to find the number on a tray. We taped the number in the missing spot so the number line would be complete!

K.NS.3: Find the number that is one more than or one less than any whole number up to 20.

Today at the art center, several kids have been interested in making collages.  I set out some options for collage materials.  After the kids got started, an outer space theme emerged.  Kids made stars, constellations, planets and comets.  We got to talk about comets a bit as there were some questions.  We learned that comets are made mostly of ice and the tail is the steam from the melting ice as it comes close to the sun.  I love how a collage art project can turn into a science lesson about comets!  That is where child led learning takes you!

IMG_4807IMG_4823IMG_4836IMG_4831

This morning, several kids were interested in kanoodle.  This is a complex game that only a few friends are old enough to play, so we got out something similar that everyone could explore.  Our Montessori beads allow kids to explore mating three dimensional shapes using two dimensional planes.  They can be fit together to make more complex shapes with pieces that resemble the shape of the pieces in the kanoodle game.

Good afternoon!

This morning several of our older friends were interested in making a letter book.  We worked on finding all of our letters from the alphabet to stamp in our books.  Many kids enjoyed illustrating their letters with a word that began with each.  One friend drew Michelangelo for the letter “M”.  Another friend found a bunny stamp for the letter “B”. Everyone at the table had a great time sharing ideas about words they could use in their books.

IMG_4688IMG_4654IMG_4668IMG_4659

Our younger friends practiced their fine motor skills as they created rows and stacks of colored pegs.  This work is all “pre-writing” development.  It will help them get ready for the book and writing projects our older friends have been interested in.

Happy Wednesday!

This morning we engaged in looking at a book on the reading steps and added pictures of friends to the felt board.

IMG_5245IMG_5243IMG_5244IMG_5265

We then headed into the kitchen to engage with the Slot-A-Shape Builders.  We explored the different shapes and identified the colors of them.  Miss Bekah helped by saying the color/shapes for us if needed.  Several friends made stacks with them.

IMG_5248IMG_5250IMG_5258IMG_5260IMG_5252

We then headed outside to play in the snow for the first time this season.  We picked up the snow in our hands, worked with a shovel to clear the snow off the cement.

Good Afternoon!

PREK1 friends came up to the sign in board where we started talking about numbers and the order in which they occur! Children wrote their name under the number that comes after 9. They identified the number 10 and wrote their name. Everyday during our calendar activity in group, we all do our calendar activity together where we identify the day of the week and answer a question such as, “What number comes after 10?”. Then, we say the whole date such as “Today is Tuesday, November 11”. So, we get daily practice saying aloud what number comes next.

K.NS.3: Find the number that is one more than or one less than any whole number up to 20.

IMG_1652IMG_1651IMG_1623

This morning we offered a letter stamping project at the art center.  Kids thought of words they wanted to spell with the stamps, then we thought about what sounds we heard.  Older kids could sound a variety of words and help younger kids figure out the sounds as well.  Some friends chose to stamp their name.  Others picked words like “Rainbow Unicorn, Zebra, Cat, Rhino, Ox and Super Kitties”. There was an animal theme for sure!  When kids choose words that are important to them, their interests peak with the project.  This allows their learning to stick!

One friend became interested in the exclamation point and question marks stamps.  We got to talk about what the symbols mean.  Some kids enjoyed adding the symbols to their words.

IMG_4553IMG_4550IMG_9152

IMG_4555IMG_4508IMG_4540

At the circle table we offered an open ended loose parts activity which encouraged one to one ratio,  counting, sorting and pattern making.  Friends could use colored clothes pins to see how many they could fit on a rope, make colored patterns or match colors.  Kids naturally know what is developmentally appropriate in projects like this and will follow what ever it is they know they need.
