Welcome to September!

Happy birthday, Evie!! Evie celebrated her 4th birthday today! We are so happy we were able to celebrate with her.

FYI: if you’re looking for a fun and new snack at home, Evie brought in frozen watermelon popsicles and our friends LOVED them.

This is how Evie’s mom made them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8qJMfuriTI

Kindergarteners sign in this morning revolved around objects in different arrays: specifically a rectangular array, circular array, and in a line. When Sophia got to the circular array, she said, “Oh wow! I am going to place my finger here so I know where I started.”

K.NS.5: Count up to 20 objects arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle. Count up to 10 objects in a scattered configuration.

We read, ‘Here Comes The Big Parade’ in our K group. The book focused on every uppercase and lowercase letter in the alphabet. On each page, that letter was prevalent so we talked not only about the letter but the sound that it makes. Before heading to the journal table, we plugged in some missing letters that were on the chalkboard. We pointed to the letters together and if we came to a blank spot, friends had to figure out who had the missing letter and tape it up in the line.

K.RF.2.4: Identify and name all uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

In PREK2, friends matched numbers to a group of items. For example, Daniel had the number 9 and his job was to find the picture with nine items!

Happy Monday!

Today, our class for the school year became complete! Ellie joined our classroom today after being over at Wee Wee! We are so excited to have Ellie in our classroom and round out our 2020 crew.

This week, we are kicking off our MACK curriculum. This is our second full year of implementing this curriculum into our daily routine. MACK stands for Mindful Attention with Curiosity and Kindness Curriculum. Our Mindful Attention with Curiosity and Kindness curriculum provides teachers with direct-teaching learning goals in 5 areas over a 12 week cycle. To read up on this ‘newer’ addition to our curriculum, you can read up on it here (plus look at our ever growing list of awesome books!)

https://weefriendskids.com/about-us/program-philosophy/

______________________________________________________________________________________

This week’s MACK is:

Children will learn that mindfulness involves paying attention on purpose in the present moment with curiosity and kindness. Children will use their sense to describe what they are feeling and seeing in the world around them.

In K group, we read ‘The Listening Walk’ which speaks to listening instead of talking. When you stop talking, you can hear much more going on around you. Afterwards, each friend got the chance to come to the chalkboard and count the numbers of items on a specific paper. For example. Mack came up to the chalkboard and counted 4 diamonds. After he counted the four diamonds, he found the number 4 and tapped it above the picture that displayed ‘4’.

In our kindergarten curriculum, we’ll focus on the following FAB’s this week:

K.RF.2.4: Identify and name all uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

K.RF.3.2: Orally segment words into syllables.

K.NS.4: Perform one-to-one correspondence tasks.

K.NS.5: Count up to 20 objects arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle. Count up to 10 objects in a scattered configuration.

Happy Friday! I hope you all have had a GREAT week.

Today we say Goodbye to our good friend, Ellie. Sadly, she  has graduated to Infant/Toddler classroom and will be moving into the Pre-school classroom. We are VERY happy that she is just a classroom away and that we will still see her daily. Smile

These last few weeks Ellie has been a wonderful “Teacher’s Assistant”to Rebekah and I, helping us show the many new toddlers we have in the classroom the ropes! She has LOVED her title and did a great job!

Happy Friday!

After we read, ‘I’m The Best!’ in K group, we used the community helpers from group yesterday as a catalyst for an activity today! Each friend got to come up to the board and choose a community helper. They took the word card back to their mat and they had to say aloud a tool that the community helper uses to do their job! So, for example, a child had ‘police officer’. They shared that a police officer needs a police car to do their job. We all had a discussion where other peers shared different tools that the community helper would need.

Social Studies: K.2.1 Give examples of people who are community helpers (inside the classroom and outside the classroom) and describe how they help us.

Good Afternoon!

We read, ‘Be Glad Your Nose Is On Your Face’ in K group  which is a huge collection of funny poems! Each friend got a turn to pick a poem before we started in on the activity for group time. There were 9 community helpers that were taped to the chalkboard. We read them aloud and after, I read a description of a community helper and by working together, we were able to match each helper to their description!

Social Studies: K.2.1 Give examples of people who are community helpers (inside the classroom and outside the classroom) and describe how they help us.

It was quite the busy morning! Friends requested beads + pipe cleaners as well as the art easel. We saw older friends take their younger peers under their wing and help them with these activities—one of the many benefits of a multi-age classroom!

DSCN9500DSCN9506DSCN9511DSCN9514

The rest of our morning was a mixture of inside time where our younger friends got in some wonderful gross motor activity while the outside offered up more of a quiet down time. Miss Kim brought out a big blanket and some of our favorite books for a quieter activity in the shade!
