Happy Wednesday!

Today was a fantastic day for other adults to read to our little Wee Wee’s. Not only did we have a parent reading stories, but we had a teacher from the Wee classroom read to a few of our friends as well.  We LOVE to read and it’s always a treat to us when we get different people to read also. Smile Thank you Ben (Jack’s dad) and Miss Mindy!!

Coloring in our journal binders was another activity we engaged ourselves in today. We showed great attention span while coloring many pictures, we utilized our fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination skills, and the recognition of  our colors.

Breakfast: Whole grain Chex cereal and banana.

Lunch: Scrambled eggs with cheese, whole wheat toast with butter, peas, and mandarin oranges.

Snack: Whole wheat crackers with peanut butter.

K/PREK1 used their knowledge of numbers from 1 to 20 to complete the group activity. Each child came to the board and had to identify the yellow number that I had stated. For example, Lucy came to the board and had to find the yellow number 16. Once she identified the number, I then asked her to find the green number in that row that is one more than 16. She was able to identify the number 17 and drew a circle around it.

K.NS.3: Find the number that is one more than or one less than any whole number up to 20.

PREK2 used turkey manipulatives to complete simple subtraction problems. For example, Miss Kim put six turkeys on the floor. After friends got done counting those six turkeys, she took two away. Together, the group counted how many turkeys were left. At this age, having something concrete, where children are able to touch and move, really allows the concept to be grasped.

Several children came to the art table where a puff paint art experience was made available. Friends took brushes and brushed the puff paint onto the paper before having the option of sprinkling sparkles onto their puff paint.

We’ve been interested in money lately! Friends used the felt money in their play this morning as they told one another the cost of goods that they were offering!

We used the chains in an unconventional way! While they were put out on the table to make patterns, friends decided to use them on their bodies! They helped each other make bracelets or anklets as well as belts that went around their waist.

Good Afternoon!

Reminders:

Wee Friends is closed Thursday, November 22nd and Friday, November 23rd for Thanksgiving break.

We will have PAJAMA DAY on Wednesday, November 21st. I’ll put a reminder next week too!

K/PREK1 read ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ which is a story we’ve read before. Friends share events that they recall before we read the story which offers a great authentic assessment for myself to see how many detailed events children remember!

Afterwards, we all held out our fingers to help us with math facts that were on the chalkboard. Before we rolled up our mats, each child was responsible for one equation. Lucy held out both of her hands and I asked, “Lucy, if I have five fingers, how many more do I need to get to 10 fingers?”. By using her fingers, she quickly came up with the answer of 5!

K.CA.4: Find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number for any number from 1 to 9 (e.g., by using objects and drawings), and record the answer with a drawing or an equation.

PREK2 used their knowledge of rhyming words to create new words. For example, the first word was ‘cook’. Miss Kim took away the ‘c’ and friends had to come up with a new word which was ‘Dook’. After substituting sounds to change words, children went to go journal where we are all working on writing our names on the top of our journal page.

We got all bundled up in our snow gear and headed outside this morning! While there wasn’t a ton of snow, it was enough to get our little hearts beating and our little bodies moving.

Good Afternoon All!

We started our morning out by engaging our minds in puzzle play! This activity has multiple learning possibilities for our friends. Using our hand-eye coordination, fine motor, and cognitive skills are always in full gear when we manipulate puzzles.

We then bundled up nice and cozy warm to head outside and get some fresh air and play in the little amounts of snow we had. Friends had a GREAT time! We can’t wait for more snow to fall, so we can build a snowman and have even more fun. Smile

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a fantastic weekend.

A request was made for our colorful see through tissues. We use these tissues in many different fashions. We dance with them, throw them in the air to watch them elegantly flow down to the floor, and we put them over our eyes to see what our classroom looks like through a sheer cloth and different color. Our sensory skills, color recognition skills, and hand eye coordination skills are all being utilized with this fun activity. DSCN9868DSCN9873

Daniel and Jack were very engaged with the number cake activity. With this activity they learn to coordinate the circular cake pieces to fit on top of another piece in sequence, from largest to smallest. They can also count the cake circles as they are placing them on top of one another. They worked very well together, displaying awesome teamwork. Smile

Lunch: Whole wheat/grain butter noodles with shredded beef, broccoli, and strawberries.

Happy Monday!

I opened our Wee Friends email this morning and this gem of an article was waiting for us (thank you, Mandy!). I never tell parents to read an article; HOWEVER, I highly recommend this specific article. It aligns perfectly with what we believe in as far as the development of these children and what we expect from them.

“But more important, here’s what parents need to know. That every child learns to walk, talk, read, and do algebra at their own pace and that it will have no bearing on how well they walk, talk, read, or do algebra.”

There are several reasons why I love this article. It speaks to the developmentally appropriate aspect of preschool. Reading, writing, and mathematical skills are important, yes. But at what cost? At the cost of “knowing they are loved wholly and unconditionally, all the time” or “knowing how to laugh, act silly, be goofy and use their imagination”? Reading, writing, and math will come. Every child learns at a difference pace and in a different way. A suggestion the author gives: “Count up to 60 when you’re mixing a cake and he’ll pick up his numbers. Get fun books from the library about space or the alphabet. Experiment with everything from backyard snow to celery stalks in food coloring. It’ll all happen naturally, with much more fun and much less pressure.”

K/PREK1 read ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ from our library collection! I picked out six words from the story and we eventually ended up changing a letter/few letters in each word to create a new word! We talked about the different sounds that were added and our older friends helped me say each new word.

K.RF.3.5: Add, delete, or substitute sounds to change words.

PREK2 used turkey manipulatives to help complete the equation ‘7+___=10”. Together, children came to the conclusion that ‘3’ completes the equation. Each friend got a chance to write their name under the correct answer.

Good Afternoon!

**JUST A REMINDER: UPDATED SHOT RECORDS ARE DUE BY MONDAY, JANUARY 7TH!

K/PREK1 read ‘Hurty Feelings’ written by Helen Lester who also writes all of our favorite Tacky stories! In ‘Hurty Feelings’, Fragility got her feelings hurt all the time, even when friends gave her compliments! She took compliments and turned them into negative comments which she eventually got really upset about. We talked about how we feel when friends used unkind words towards us. It ended up being an awesome session where we shared our feelings with one another.

Afterwards, we practiced counting from 0 to 100 by ten’s a few times. We were about to do calendar when Grady all of a sudden said, “Hey! I see a pattern—1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10!”. He was referring to the numbers from 0 to 10 and noticed the pattern without any teacher prompting! (true ‘AH HA!’ moment!)

K.NS.1: Count to at least 100 by ones and tens.

K/PREK2 explored a pattern arrangement that was on the carpet. Together, friends counted row by row until they had counted every turkey!

We were absolutely amazed at the snow today! (this happens every year..)

Our day was full of stories, taking trips to Florida in our boat creation, and imagination filled play experiences.

Today we were all pretty excited about seeing snow on the ground for the first time this season. We didn’t get a chance to go outside, but we had lots of fun in the classroom.

Good Afternoon!

K/PREK1 practiced deciphering between singular and plural nouns. For example, I read the first sentence two ways:

I have one dog AND I have one dogs.

Friends listened to each sentence and commented on which one made sense! We worked together to complete each sentence while talking about adding an ‘s’ to make something plural. I taped the word that completed each sentence into the blank spot.

K/PREK2 worked together to fill in missing numbers from 1 to 20. As they came to a missing number, they talked about what number may come next.
