We could not have had a better fall day to begin October and to explore the farm.  Today we picked…and picked….and picked up.  We brought back to WF a wonderful assortment of nature (corn, pine cones, pine branches, flowers, seed pods and so on).  The children also found at least a dozen small frogs which they found challenging to pick up and to keep ahold of!  Same story with the grasshopper.  101

It was a beautiful morning of exploration and learning.

Good Afternoon!

Hope everyone is enjoying the last day of September!

It was a kitchen and baby doll kind of morning. Saskia propped her baby doll up in her high chair where she proceeded to feed her baby food. Rosemary took a spoon and stirred her food in her bowl. Friends use procedures and techniques that they see in the real world and use it in their play. Children are always observing their surroundings.

We sure did have to bundle up this morning as we headed outside. Friends kept commenting on how cold the sand was!

The sun finally started to peak out. Lucy and Maya walked around the yard to look at the different flowers. They really seemed to like the purple flowers that line the fence.

Tate laid on the floor and talked to Anna after lunch time. She sure thought it was funny Smile. It’s amazing to see how the multi-age grouping plays out on a day to day basis. Our older friends love taking care of our little ones.

Weekly FABS:

LITERACY:  K.3.3 Identify characters, settings and important events in a story. K.3.4 Identify favorite books and stories. MATH: K.2.1 Model addition by joining sets of objects. K.2.3 Describe addition situations.

It’s a favorite FAB week as what is described above is naturally present in each and every day at Wee Friends. All it takes is recognizing the opportunity to have a conversation and the learning moments define themselves.

And so it was as friends added blocks and trios higher and higher.

Books were read and questions asked “Who is this story about?” “What is happening in this picture?” “Where is the yellow 016star?”

018

When dancing began in housekeeping, friends were invited to go to the music rug and dance to music. “Did you know SONGS have characters Even songs without words! This song is soft and gentle-what do you think the character might be?”

“Look! I can fly!”

“Would anyone else like to fly?”

And so it goes. Hope your day is off and flying! –Laurie

Happy Friday!

Pretend play is such a big part of our day. Kitchen play. Housekeeping. Dress up. Through it all, social skills are learned through play. While the concept of ‘sharing’ is hard to grasp at this age, we try to talk about the issues we’re having during play. For example, two children wanting the same doll. We give options such as going to get another doll or waiting for their friend to be done with that certain doll. It’s all about options and choices Smile.

We’re so affectionate with our baby dolls!

IMG_0021IMG_0022

All week, we have been enjoying watching the leaves fall from the tree in the backyard. Friends have been collecting leaves and having conversations about the color of the leaves as well as the smaller/larger aspect.

IMG_0028

For quite a while this morning, we worked on filling up cups and buckets using our shovels. While we were focusing on the sandbox, we also observed the older wee friends starting a ‘hole’ exploration. They’re into digging BIG holes Smile.

It’s sibling love. With a little tackling thrown in!

WF Thursday 9/25 Doin’ What Comes Natur’lly!

Folks like us could never fuss
With schools and books and learning.
Still we’ve gone from A to Z,
Doin’ what comes naturally – Irving Berlin

045

A bunch of folks were seeing how far they could jump from a stoop to across the floor. We just did the natural thing and got ‘em outside. One thing led to another and we were on a walk trying to figure out what the REALLY LOUD sound was. We came back to the classroom and used our prairie flowers (from the farm) to create art.

Just doin’ what comes natur’lly. A to Z.

Breakfast: Puffins with pear slices

Lunch: Whole Wheat Cream Cheese and Cheddar Pizza, fresh cauliflower/carrots and strawberries

Snack: Nuts and fresh pear slices
