WF Farm, Wednesday 9.21.11

To set the mood for this blog, I must share this picture that I couldn’t resist taking this morning…

Now that we are all feeling friendly, I will share some of the highlights from our unbelievably educational and fun farm trip today:

We held chickens.  For the past few trips, Annie and Jane have been unsure about how close they wanted to get to the chickens.  Today they both held one!  Their bravery and confidence also inspired our younger girls, Arleigh and Alma to have a turn holding them too.

The children mixed the grain and fed the chickens.  Owen was able to manage the smaller bucket alone, but it took Ada, Macy and Owen with some help at the back to get the big bucket of corn into the feeding dish.

Next we fed the goats.  Alma was very uncertain about letting the goat eat grain off of her hand.  First we held her hand over our hand, and she allowed them to eat.  Very soon though, she gained confidence and shouted, “I fed the goat all by myself!”  Her expression below says it all!

Kai noticed that one of the goats did not come over to eat.  This young goat was laying over by the fence, which is not typical behavior for a goat when food of any kind is near.  We shared this information with Charlotte and our farm trip took a whole new path.  The kids were able to share in the diagnosis, care and treatment of this goat. We also went out into the field and caught all of the other goats so they all could have a preventative dose of medicine.

Feeding Luna, the young cow, was the next thing we did.  Luna wasn’t sure what she thought about us.  She can be a bit shy.  However, Ada, since her first farm trip weeks ago has been determined to “hold a cow”.  She talked soothingly to Luna and offered her grain.  Luna quickly learned that the WF group had lots of love and yummy food and she blessed us with lots of her time.

We took a short walk to finish our trip.  In this short walk, we found a small frog and took turns examining him (his body was sparkly!) and holding him (he was feisty).  I laughed so hard I had tears when the little bitty frog jumped from Owen’s hand onto his shirt.  His expression was priceless!  But, after a moment to recover, you can see below that he was happy to have the frog there.

Finally, we did some milk week explorations.  Milkweed is the favorite food of Monarch butterflys and caterpillars.  We looked at the milk drip from the plant and looked at some of the dried milkweed seeds.  We also examined the milk weed beetles.

Have a great afternoon!

WF Daily Explorations, Farm Day! 9-7-11

Today was another wonderful farm day! It was a bit chilly when we arrived, but the sun quickly warmed us up.

This trip we had 3 younger friends and 2 older friends as helpers. Jane and Kai really took their role seriously and held hands, explained, and demonstrated throughout the morning.

Some of the highlights were:

Feeding the goats our WF scraps.

Holding, touching, feeding and learning about the chickens. The younger children were intimidated by the goats and the chickens initially, but became comfortable as the morning went by.

With Ms. Charlotte’s help, we also spent some time grooming the horses today. She showed everyone how to use the pick to clean the hooves of the horses. Everyone that wanted to try was able to help.

Later we went on a walk and we saw many different things: caterpillars of many shapes and sizes, beetles, ants, butterflies, birds, bees, & flies. (Notice the beetles and the caterpillar we found on this milkweed!)

087After lunch at WF, the older children gathered around and had a farm discussion with Miss Laurie. They brainstormed all the things that you find at Ms. Charlotte’s farm. The children that went last week clearly remembered a lot about their farm experience. The children from today brought in fresh ideas to the discussion.

After the message board time, the children were excited to journal about the farm. They each enthusiastically chattered about their favorite parts of the farm. They drew, to their own ability, a representation of something related to the farm.

This type of real experience connection to language and literature creates meaningful learning that is unparalleled in any way!

WF Daily Exploration Thursday Aug. 25

What a lovely creative flow Wee Friends experienced this morning!380

Friends gathered in the reading area to listen to Goldilocks by Janice Russell. We focused on and discussed the concepts of small, medium and large. Friends looked around the classroom and gathered together chairs that represented these three sizes. We gathered enough chairs for each friend to sit on and then introduced the game “Musical Chair”s. After a few rounds we identified who was in a large, medium or small chair. 269

To further explore the idea of small/medium/large, we added sound by plunking out, on the piano, large sounding low notes, medium sounding notes and bright sweet sounding high notes. Paulina took out her recorder set and played the sopranino, alto and tenor recorders. As she played, she taught friends the Spanish words: pequeno, mediano and grande.

278

Friends closed their eyes and identified which sound they were hearing.281

Two small groups emerged out of this exploration: one moved to the art table to paste small/medium/large squares onto construction paper and the other to the reading area to cut and create with felt. One friend made a bear mask, another a fairy tale with a fallen tree and a third, a two dimensional, multi material (felt and thread) work of art. 293 305 308

Our garden has produced so many tomatoes that we’ve decided to make a Wee Friends Marinara! Friends began the multi step process today by picking the stems off the tomatoes and putting them in to a large bowl. They each took a turn sprinkling the tomatoes with salt and pouring a bit of olive oil over them. With very clean hands, they mixed them up.312

320

340 Outside, Paulina placed various sized rocks (Spanish=rocas) in a bowl of water. Friends enjoyed exploring the textures, temperatures and weight of the stones. Later, during journal time, friends continued their rock study, writing and drawing images and impressions of their exploration.

Enjoy your day!

WWF Exploring Wings!

We spent the morning outside. The children spotted a butterfly, and we discussed how it has wings and can fly. We talked about the wings on a butterfly are different to that of the wings on an airplane. Shortly after that, we spotted a few birds. It is great to see the children observing nature and initiating discussions on what we have been talking about. Elizabeth, Finn, and Marta did some dramatic play.

035

We took our “donut shop” outside today. Finn was extra creative and added sand to the top of his, and told us that they were his sprinkles! We read several stories outside as well.

Miss Laurie led us on a bear hunt! How exciting! The children spotted a brown and black bear, and a grizzly. They covered the log cabin house with a sheet and used it to hibernate. It was an adventurous morning at WWF.

For lunch today we had ham sandwiches on whole wheat buns, peas and bananas.

We hope Marty is feeling better, and will be back with us tomorrow. We sure do miss her.

Have a great afternoon~

WWF Daily Explorations, 8.5.11

Happy Friday!

This morning children began their morning with one on one reading with their
teachers and free play. Outside time was spent making music. They sang the
Hello song adding different motions to it and playing the maracas. They also
sang “Aram Sam Sam” to different tempos, noticing fast and slow and moving to
the changes. Using the stretchy band, children held it in a circle formation and
danced to “Ring Around the Rosie”, “Going Around the Sun”, “jumping Shoes” and
chants in duple meter.

Some of the children also snacked on tomatoes picked by themselves from our
vegetable garden. Some children discussed with their teachers how some of the
tomatoes were green and that meant they were not ready to be picked and
eaten. After that, they eagerly looked for red ones!! 🙂 They also played with
the sprinkler while we watered the garden.

Lunch today included pizza buns, corn and blueberries.

Have a wonderful weekend!!

WWF Daily Explorations, 8.3.11

We started our day with circles, Kix Cereal!

We sang our circle song, and Miss Lisa taught us a new game. It is called, “Going to the donut shop,” We incorprated our circle shape all in different colors. We learn colors and shapes while going to the donut shop. One of the children suggested we pretend we were eating our donuts, and brought each of us a plate. We also played our Curious George matching game. George has balloons in all different colors. The children were great at matching colors on the circle balloons.

For lunch today we had rice, peas and banana. This afternoon, weather permitting, we will have some outside exploration time with a circle themed scavenger hunt.

Have a great Day!!!

Lisa, Marty, Paulina and Amy.

WWF Daily Explorations, Monday 8.01.11

Circles, circles everywhere! We have a huge elastic circle that looks like a rainbow! Now that we know the shape and its name, we played “I Spy.” Our house has circles everywhere! We also learned a new song about circles and friendship.

Tomato alert! We pickwd some from the garden today along with a giant zucchini! The children enjoyed checking our harvest daily and sampling our crop.

We read more books on dogs and cats and talked about our pets at home. Today we had whole wheat pasta with tuna, avacado, and fresh melon.

Enjoy the start of a new week!

WWF Daily Explorations, Thursday 7.29.11

Another great week comes to an end!

This morning we had lots of dramatic play. Elizabeth and Marta really enjoyed parallel play with their dolls. They dressed them, fed them, and got them ready for bed. We read and sang, “BINGO.”

We were lucky enough to have Jason play the guitar for us this morning. Thank you, Jason!

For lunch today we had ham roll ups, peas and more fresh blueberries!

After lunch, the babies had a great time scooping and splashing water at the kids’ sink.

Enjoy the weekend!

WWF Daily Explorations, 7.26.11

This has been a teriffic Tuesay! Early this morning we read about bird nests, cats and dogs. We felt our nest and examined the egg in it. Some of us played on the floor with our new road puzzle.
Miss Paulina read to us, “There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.” The children helped out by acting out some of the animals. It was a lot of fun! Olivia and Sloane played in our play house. Umi, Finn, and Marta enjoyed the bikes.

For lunch today we had chicken and pasta, corn, and applesauce.

Later today we will make some nests out of yarn, and use our child-friendly chopsticks to eat our pretend sushi! As pick up times are often hectic, please check your child’s daily sheet for feeding times, etc. These sheets are in your child’s cubby upon your arrival.
Make it a great day!

Regards, Lisa, Paulina, Marty, and Amy.
