Good Afternoon!

Clipboards served many purposes today: such as holding pipe cleaners stable so that they could be twisted or “braided” as Clara called it AND making a chart that shows how many puzzles we have. Jackson commented, “I want to see how many puzzles we have here!” So grabbing a clipboard and making a chart seemed like the next step.

In keeping with our motion and fast/slow theme for the week, friends went to the habitrail to construct different ramps for their cars. We put a car at the top of each ramp to see which car traveled faster! A child was heard saying, “I want my car to go faster! I need to fix my ramp.” Children got together and worked it out. Our conversation skills AND trial and error skills were definitely put to the test!

We enjoyed stories in various settings today.

DSCN6679DSCN6663

Elliott used the wooden blocks to construct a boat before a few friends came over to add to the creation! It grew in size and before we went outside, Elizabeth said, “Can we get a picture taken of this?!”

DSCN6698DSCN6701

An ice cream shop was created outside where flavors such as chocolate, strawberry, and blue moon were made! The crew were on a time crunch as the bell was about to ring so they finally said, “Okay! We’re ready. Come get your ice cream!”

With it being poetry day, we read a few of our favorite poems in ‘A Light In The Attic’. As a group, we created our own poem with everyone contributing different ideas.

DSCN6735DSCN6744

Some children took the poetry theme and used it in their journals while some of their peers had a different direction that they took their journals. Our journal time was full of kid spelling, where friends tried to sound out as many consonants and vowels as they could.

For breakfast, we had Corn Squares and grapes. Lunch was brown rice with shredded cheese and turkey, oranges/cantaloupe, and green beans. PM snack was pumpkin seeds and whole wheat thins. Our wee sprout for the day was carrots.

Have a great night!

Today’s sensory activity was uncooked black bean pasta. David and Ruby grabbed big handfuls and seemed to enjoy feeling the thin pasta sticks break. Ruby and Sophia liked sticking their hands in the tub and swishing all the pasta around. David would grab some in his fist, stand up, and watch the pasta sprinkle back into the container.

Hello!

Keeping with our Kindergarten theme for the week (K.3.2 Investigate that things move in different ways, such as fast, slow, etc.):

We read a Robert Munsch book entitled, “Andrew’s Loose Tooth”. Elizabeth and Elliott shared their experience of losing a tooth. As a group, we talked about the perfect/easiest way to lose a tooth. The responses varied among the group with, ‘leaving it be’ getting the most votes Smile. Friends brought up the scenario of ‘pulling it out quickly’, which to that most said, “Ouch!” or had a scared face!

An activity was made available this morning for children to partake in. Paint choices were put on the table along with straws. A teacher demonstrated how to blow through the straw to make the paint move!

DSCN6508DSCN6511

We took a deep breath and exhaled through out straw.

“Look it moved!”

DSCN6512DSCN6542

“I’m mixing the colors!”

DSCN6532DSCN6533

“I need green but since Tate’s using the green, I can just mix yellow and blue together!”

DSCN6565

Elliott drew a diagram for Miss Melinda that entailed details of an experiment he started in the tub last night. He put a cup on the edge of the tub and it eventually popped up and made the water shoot up! He gathered the materials he needed and tried to duplicate the experiment, with his friends help of course!

DSCN6569DSCN6573

Our friends have been on the hunt for BUGS! Rollie pollies, crickets, and spiders..just to name a few Smile. A certain child kept asking this morning, “When are we going outside? I have to check on my bugs!”

DSCN6591DSCN6592

Clara, Elizabeth, and Emerson pretended to be mice for the day. They gathered grass and weeds to build a mouse fire along with food to survive. As a group, they were extremely resourceful!

DSCN6619DSCN6621

For breakfast, we had oatmeal with cinnamon and bananas. Lunch was farm fresh scrambled eggs, whole wheat bread, oranges/banana, and cauliflower/carrots. PM snack was popcorn and grapes. Our wee sprout for the day was carrots.

Have a lovely evening.

Introducing our Spring 2016 swim class!

P4260019

Today, our swimmers had their first swim class! The reviews were spectacular!

“Now, my favorite place to swim is the Y!”

“I jumped off of that block thing!”

“I put my head under the water!”

P4260004P4260015

We all did a FANTASTIC job and took full advantage of our first swim class!

While our swimmers were off being all aquatic, some friends stayed behind to continue working on our fab for the week (K.3.2 Investigate that things move in different ways such as fast, slow, etc.). Miss Melinda set up an activity at the art table where friends could further investigate marbles. Each child took a color of paint, a bin, and a piece of paper along with their marble. After dipping the marble in paint, they placed it in their bucket. We tipped our bucket at different angles to see the multitude of lines that were left on the paper. A child was heard saying, “Oops. My marble is out of paint. I’ve got to get more!”

After the swimmers got back to Wee Friends, we all needed to exert some energy so a rousing game of ‘What Time Is It, Mr. Fox?’ was played!

DSCN6477DSCN6481

For breakfast, we had Kashi’s Wheat Squares with banana. Lunch was whole wheat flatbread with melted cheese, fresh PPC pineapple, and a mixture of cherry tomatoes and red peppers. Our afternoon snack was toasted whole wheat bagel with cream cheese. Our wee sprout for the day was cherry tomatoes.

The sandbox was a popular place this morning! Our friends picked materials to sift, scoop, fill, and pour the sand with, using their upper bodies. We love to watch them take in the texture of the sand and become absorbed in their play!

We hung some long strips of fabric from one of the doorways this afternoon. One fabric is light and gauzy and the other soft and fuzzy. Our friends loved walking through the doorway and feeling the fabrics brush against their face and arms. It’s also a great new spot to play peek-a-boo together!

WF 4/25/16

***The YMCA swim class begins TOMORROW for: Jackson, Eren, Clara, Addi, Elliott, Lucy, Elizabeth, Lulu

PLEASE BRING YOUR SWIMMER  A SWIM SUIT .  They may bring goggles also if they prefer to swim with them, but they are not required.  We will provide a towel.

Today many of our children, both kindergarteners and preschoolers alike, were delighted with an activity that Miss Melinda created for this week’s FAB Science: K.3.2 Investigate that things move in different ways, such as fast, slow, etc.   Mel created a hand-on activity that started out with a demonstration of fast and slow with marbles through a tube.  Then there was a lengthy discussion about how the angle and height of the tube effected the speed of the marble.  Finally, the children set off with their own marble and explored our environment to find ways to make it go fast and slow.  There was much happy animation as children discovered the many ways to make the marble roll at different speeds and shared their discoveries with friends.  We extended our exploration of fast and slow in our outdoor learning environment.

Happy Earth Day!

Today in Kindergarten:

We celebrated Earth Day by discussing the Earth as a whole and what it has to offer. This lead into different weather changes around the globe and what different parts of Earth look like.

A few comments we heard:

“There’s a whole lot of water!”

“This country here..is this where Naia lives?”

“Where do I live?”

DSCN6244DSCN6246

We researched on the internet and found pictures of what Italy, Austraila, etc. look like. We saw a picture of a star fish which lead into an exploration of star fish. We found a video that we watched that let us know that there are over 200 different variations of star fish. Some star fish have as many as sixteen legs!

We used the globe as a guide for children to point out where they’ve traveled to.

DSCN6252

Elizabeth took it upon herself to draw different parts of the globe. She used detail and even wrote the name of each country.

DSCN6253DSCN6254

We wrapped up our fab this week by discussing what specific areas they’d like to learn more about. Tornados, volcanos, beaches, and geysers were mentioned. Elliott took his geyser idea and translated it into his journal. He informed his friends of the previous knowledge he has concerning geysers. We plan on diving more into this topic next week..

DSCN6332DSCN6326

The rest of our morning was full of:

Magnatiles.

DSCN6233DSCN6234

Puzzles (with concentration written all over our faces).

DSCN6264DSCN6272

Outside time where we took apart our tulip!

DSCN6276DSCN6278

We plan on planting the bulbs in the fall.

DSCN6284DSCN6296

A few of our younger friends started working on pedaling! The bicycle circle was quite busy.
