Good Afternoon!

In K/PREK1 group, we read a book that one of our kindergarteners picked out: The Berenstain Bears: No Girls Allowed. Before we started reading, we looked at the cover for clues as to what the book was about. When friends started sharing their thoughts, I asked a question: “Have you ever not allowed a friend to play with you?”. All six members looked around quietly at each other and slowly started raising their hand. We had a thoughtful discussion about our feelings and how friends can and do make sure feel. Not only did we talk about the sad feelings that we feel but the happy feelings too!

Our words have power and as friends get older, they come to understand just how much power they have! One of our main goals is to give children the tools to solve their problems with words. Problem solving is something that occurs several times a day. When children come to the end of their time here at Wee Friends, our goal is to have given them enough tools so they can solve their problems using their words, without any adult interaction.

“Every conflict presents you with a choice. You can choose to view conflict as an opportunity to teach or as an opportunity to blame and punish.”

PREK2 took Montessori beads and created different sized chains. After their chain was made, they used paper dinosaurs as a measure. Franklin used more dinosaurs to measure his chain than Chloe did. Children quickly shared that Franklin’s bead chain was longer than Chloe’s.

Grady and Maxwell played around with wooden boards and blocks to try and make different ramps. They used cars on the ramps to see how differently they would move.

DSCN6131DSCN6132DSCN6138

This idea grew and eventually took up the entire habitrail, our gross motor area. When they had the final product, we worked together to make sure it was stable enough. We switched out the cars for marbles because they are round and moved better on our ramp.

We had to make a few changes but eventually, a marble traveled the entire track, ending in a wooden bin which was our goal!

This happened over and over (and over and over!) again. Friends took various turns, picking out two marbles to put down the track.

This activity was full of imagination, trial and error, collaboration, and pure joy.

Chloe sat at the art table where she started by writing ‘mom’ without any help. After, she asked how to write her brothers name. She knew it started with an E and with a little teacher assistance, she was able to write his name. Her writing experience took off from there, writing different teacher and friend names.

Chloe used a letter guide where she focused on her uppercase letters. She turned it over and said, “I want to write these smaller letters!”. Through the whole experience, she guided the process, asked the questions, and shared her enthusiasm with friends who eventually came to the table too.

“Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment.”

Good Afternoon.

“A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.” ~ Maria Montessori

Today our friends experienced a new, exciting way to paint. Several colors were added into a large bucket along with a small ball, and our little ones were happily rolling that ball all around in the bucket. They made beautiful and very colorful paintings.

We will be adding these paintings to our Wee Art Gallery very soon, so please keep a close look out for your child’s work of art!

Good Afternoon!

In K/PREK1, we read ‘Thidwick, the Big Hearted Moose’ which is a story about several different animals moving onto Thidwick’s antlers. When a different animal moved in, we compared them to the animals that were already there. “The animals are getting bigger!”, one friend shared.

After we finished the story, children helped me sort pictures into categories. I read all of the categories first: long, light, short, cold, hot, and heavy. We quickly came to realize that a few pictures could go in multiple categories. For example, we were trying to decided which group was best for the giraffe: long or heavy. Friends shared their thoughts and as a group, we decided that the giraffe belonged in the ‘long’ category because of it’s neck.

K.M.1: Make direct comparisons of the length, capacity, weight, and temperature of objects, and recognize which objects is shorter, longer, taller, lighter, heavier, warmer, cooler, or holds more.

In PREK2, friends made a prediction about the book they were going to read. The title was, ‘The Berenstain Bears Catch the Bus’. Before they started to read the story, children looked at the front cover of the book and answered the following question: “Will Brother and Sister Bear be able to catch the bus?”. It was almost a split decision, with three friends saying ‘yes’ and two friends saying ‘no’. As they read the story, their question was answer: Yes! The Berenstain Bears did catch the bus.

We had a request for the ‘Crystal Climbers’ this morning which were put out in the science area. Quickly, several friends came to join and build their own creations. This activity requires strong fine motor muscles as it can be challenging to put these pieces together.

The art table was buzzing with letters, sounds, and putting thoughts onto paper. Children played with letters as initiative was taken by writing the letters down on paper.

Happy Monday. I hope you all had a fantastic weekend.

The trampoline is always a great way to get and keep our friends bodies in motion when it is just too bitter cold outside. This gross motor activity is a favorite of all our little Wee Wee’s!

While engaged in this fun activity we can learn how to balance our bodies, use a jumping motion, work on taking turns, (waiting for our turn) and work together if we deicide to jump with a friend.

Happy Friday!

We read a ‘Frog and Toad’ story in K/PREK1 today where the author used the words yesterday, today, and tomorrow quite often in referring to time. We talked about these words and what they mean in the context of time.

Afterwards, we went over what we talked about yesterday in reference to the hour hand and minute hand on a clock. Each child was given a time and the opportunity to come up to the clock and make that time.

For example, Lucy was given the time 2:15. The hour hand was written in red marker while the minute hand was written in blue marker which corresponded with the clock. Lucy moved the hour hand to the 2 and the minute hand to the 3 which represents :15. We quickly found out that the small, blue number represents the minute hand!

K.M.2: Understand concepts of time, including: morning, afternoon, evening, today, yesterday, tomorrow, day, week, month, and year. Understand that clocks and calendars are tools that measure time.

We couldn’t contain our excitement as a still life was prepped at the art table. Friends used a different medium today: pastels! Children took their time as they observed the still life roses before drawing what they saw.

DSCN5890DSCN5891DSCN5898DSCN5913

Emma and Sophia displayed what it means to have determination. They built a magnatile tower as high as they could, much taller than they are. Every time when it fell, they rebuilt it!

Happy Friday!

We were all very excited about coloring in our journals today.

Once we dove into coloring with our markers, we soon found that they weren’t making any colorful marks on our paper. Evie asked Miss Marty, “Why are there no colors?” I explained to her that they all dried out and we would need to get brand new ones. Boy oh boy, were there excited smiling faces then!!!! It was even more fun coloring with the new  bright, vibrant colors.

“Time is not measured by clocks but by moments.”

In the mind of a child, this statement is pretty inaccurate. Statements such as, “When is my mom/dad coming?” or “What time is lunch?” contradict the statement above because children are looking for a time. Clocks and time are a big part of our day. While time in general is pretty abstract at this age, children understand it in a way that’s relevant to them.

In K/PREK1, we talked about clocks after we finished our poetry session. I used authentic assessment by asking questions to see how much prior knowledge children had pertaining to clocks. We identified the hour and minute hand and specifically what happens when the minute hand is on the 12. I moved the hour hand to different numbers and children would indicate what the time was. For example, when I had the minute hand stationary on the 12 but moved the hour hand, they would respond, “3 o’clock”, “5 o’clock”, or “10 o’clock” depending on where I placed the hour hand.

We are going to dive deeper into the clock tomorrow!

K.M.2: Understand concepts of time, including: morning, afternoon, evening, today, yesterday, tomorrow, day, week, month, and year. Understand that clocks and calendars are tools that measure time.

Good Afternoon.

“No one can be free unless he is independent.” ~Maria Montessori

Today as Daniel was engaged in the cooking utensils we made a very interesting discovery!

Along with the use of pots and pans, Daniel added in a few of the magnetic cylinders only to find out that they stuck to the pans. We were very excited to see such an amazing science activity added in our dramatic play. Smile

Later in the day, Evie was in the dramatic play center engaged in cooking soup. She quickly brought the soup over to Miss Marty and said, “It’s hot, you have to blow on it” It was the best soup ever!!! I loved it.

Pretend play helps our little ones expand in several different aspects of their learning. Thinking skills, language development, emotional development and even physical development are all being worked on during this fun and exciting play.

Today several of our friends were engaged in the dramatic play center. The baby dolls were the main attraction!

Jack and Zoe each gathered blankets for their babies and decided to wrap them up to keep them nice and cozy warm.

While engaged in this activity Jack showed great empathy skills as his baby started to cry.  He told his baby, “It’s okay baby.”

We always enjoy seeing our classroom fish float through their water environment, but today the fish were very enticing to a few of our friends.

Miss Marty asked each child that was interested which fish was their favorite, how many fish were swimming in the water and what color the fish were. We were all excited to see the fish chasing one another from time to time.
