Good afternoon!

This morning the older friends were busy climbing up the ladders.  Cece worked on pulling herself up to a standing position at her activity table.

Good Afternoon!

Our friends started their morning by engaging with the Latches puzzle board. They are occasionally curious about the locks we have around our classroom, so Miss Bekah brought out this puzzle for our friends to work on. It gives them the opportunity to freely explore 6 different latches and to practice their problem-solving skills.

IMG_6651(3)IMG_6652(2)IMG_6662(3)IMG_6666(4)

Miss Bekah brought down the magnetic Mix-and-Match animal pieces for us to create with. We worked on matching pieces to make dinosaurs, farm animals and safari animals. Some friends used their creativity to build new creatures, saying “it looks so silly.”

IMG_6672(3)IMG_6673(4)IMG_6674(3)IMG_6675(3)IMG_6676(3)IMG_6677(4)

We then headed outside for another day of beautiful weather. Some of our friends explored a mud tray with sticks and construction vehicles. Two other friends opted to play in the sandbox instead and use tools or their hands to engage with it.

Good Afternoon!

We used a map of the world for our PREK1 sign in this morning! We identified the compass on the map and talked about the four main directions. Children were able to state that ‘N’ stood for North! We talked about the three other directions as well.

A few friends have been travelling recently or are planning to travel this summer so we looked up the destinations on the map and figured out what direction the city or state was from us. Places we looked up were Washington, D.C., Virginia, Singapore, and Vietnam!

Social Studies: Create maps 2 dimensionally and 3 dimensionally.

This morning one of our friends said “I really liked that sand building activity with the trucks yesterday…can we do that again?”.  There was a lot of communicative hand gesturing so I knew it was important.  Of course, since we use emergent curriculum, we were happy to set up an activity for further exploration.  I couldn’t help but expand on it though.  Instead of kinetic sand, we used real sand.  We made read lakes and a river flowing through the middle.  We added long sticks and flat rocks which the kids used to build bridges, roads and houses.  Friends were engrossed in imaginative play, sensory and creative problem solving all morning…

IMG_3597IMG_3591IMG_3607IMG_3594IMG_3621

…so much so that we moved the activity outdoors!

We hope you enjoy some more pictures from out day!

PREK2:  During group we read “The Mud Puddle”.  Most of us could confidently say this book was “fiction” because a mud puddle could not “run, walk or jump”.  After the story, we thought about how we could describe what the mud felt like on our hands while we explored the activity this morning.  We made a class list of what we thought.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we engaged with dress up clothes and accessories.  We worked on our self help skills putting the clothes on.

IMG_6535(3)IMG_6571(4)IMG_6572(4)IMG_6573(4)

We then headed into the kitchen to engage in a loose parts activity with color beads, a pipe cleaner and pattern card.  We worked on matching the color of our bead to the color on the pattern card.  Some of us worked our fine motor skills to string the beads onto our pipe cleaners.  Another friend was stacking their color beads by color.

Good Afternoon!

**Wee Friends will be closed for summer break starting Monday, June 23rd through Friday, July 4th. We’ll reopen Monday, July 7th. Thanks!

_____________________________________________________________________________________

We kicked off our week with our PREK1 kids coming to the sign in board where we looked at a map of the United States! We identified a specific symbol that identifies mountains. We found a few mountain symbols on the west coast. Throughout the week, we’ll continue talking about maps and possibly creating some of our own!

Social Studies: Create maps 2 dimensionally and 3 dimensionally.

IMG_3444(7)IMG_3498(5)

Today we offered a play based learning activity using kinetic sand to build land formations.  We built mountains, islands and rivers.  We used popsicle sticks to make bridges over the “water” for out vehicles.  We added wooden trees to our landscapes along with construction vehicles.  One friends pretended to plant trees with his back hoe.  He dug holes for the trees, then asked another friends to be the “dump truck” and carry the sand away.

IMG_3491(5)IMG_3479(6)IMG_3441(6)IMG_3396(4)IMG_3439(6)

At the light table friends practiced kid spelling or making their name using the letters.  A few created a sorting activity, sorting the letters by color.  Through play, our kids explored both language and early math.

Good afternoon!

Our friends started their morning with silk scarves. They placed them over their heads or held them up to their face to look through them.

IMG_6376(4)IMG_6378(4)IMG_6379(4)IMG_6385(4)

We then made our way to the kitchen to explore a loose parts activity. Our tray included pompoms, a bowl, tongs, and a second bowl or cup. We practiced our fine motor skills to pinch the tongs to pick up the pompoms to place in our cup or bowl.

IMG_6392(4)IMG_6393(4)IMG_6396(4)IMG_6390(4)IMG_6394(4)IMG_6397(3)

Our friends engaged with shape stackers at the housekeeping table. We identified the shape of the stacker we were using and determined that we had two circle stackers and one triangle stacker.

IMG_6414(4)IMG_6416(3)IMG_6417(4)IMG_6427(4)IMG_6429(3)

The rain stayed away this morning, allowing our friends to go out and play! We crawled on the balance beam set, poked our head through the climbing house window with a smile, or explored the construction vehicles in the rock area with a friend.

Good Afternoon!

We are winding up farm season as we head into summer.  We decided to touch on some of our favorite places at Prairie Winds Farm.  First we visited the barn and fed the horses.  We held and petted the chickens.  Then we decided to go exploring to visit places we had not visited before.  We took a new path through the meadow which lead us to many new discoveries in our interaction with nature.

IMG_7695IMG_7709IMG_7666IMG_7676IMG_7687IMG_7692

We found a toad as we walked.  We each took a turn to hold it.  Three kids said it was their first time ever holding a toad.  We talked about its habitat and how it is alike and different from a frog.  We also found a large millipede and talked about similarities and differences when compared with a centipede.  For instance, one is a vegetarian and the other, a predatory creature.  The last type of animal we discovered was the slug… and they were everywhere.  We found “whole families” of slugs, according to one friend.  One friend asked why we had not seen so many slugs before.  We had a discussion about what conditions where different in the environment.  It was decided that since the slugs needed very wet places and the day was very wet, that this must be a contributing factor.  One friend said he wanted to build a “wet house” for the slugs:)  Lots of learning at our “Wee Friends Nature School” today.

IMG_7699IMG_7716

Our gross motor work out was in full swing as friends found and gathered fallen branches.  They voluntarily chose to drag or carry the branches all the way back down the trail to the look out, so they could make a fort!  What dedication!  Ryan commented that he would be very strong after this!  The kids exemplified some amazing team work during this endeavor.  It was hard work so it took cooperation, negotiation and problem solving!

IMG_7724IMG_7721IMG_7731IMG_7737IMG_7730

Arthur was over the moon this morning after asking for help solving a puzzle. This puzzle has a collection of cards to choose from and two colored blocks that have to be put into the square a specific way. He did the puzzle several times and became very confident so I introduced Ka-Noodle, one of Wee Friends favorite past time activities. Ka-noodle works in levels (1-6) and gets more challenging in each level. Activities like this are great for spacial awareness as well as fine motor control.
