Good Afternoon!

We felt it was a good day for an engaging sensory activity!  Friends enjoyed exploring a large tray with chemistry lab vibes.  They mixed soap, water, pompoms and liquid water colors to make potions in vats and vials.  A couple of friends even stayed to continue exploratory play after everyone had gone outside.  Since we had a teacher inside finishing up some fresh baked banana muffins for lunch, they were welcome to finish exploring!

Good afternoon!

We had a musical start to our morning today. Miss Bekah brought down the shaker instruments for our friends to explore and shake.

IMG_6143(3)IMG_6148(4)IMG_6152(3)IMG_6151(4)

We then made our way into the kitchen for a water/sensory play activity. The tray at the table contained rocks, faux plants, snakes, frogs and water for our friends to explore. We identified the colors of the frogs and the varying sizes of the snakes. We also discussed the environments where frogs and water snakes reside, and mimicked the behaviors of the frogs by making them jump on the objects in the tray.

Good Afternoon!

PREK1 kids came to the sign in board where they were given several options to write their name under. They were asked to choose their favorite local spot in our community but several friends couldn’t pick just one. SO, they wrote their name under multiple places Smile.  A few of our favorite places were the movie theater, car wash, and park!

Social Studies: K.3.3 Locate and describe places in the school and community.

We had a creative morning creating a large bubble wrap transfer painting in our outdoor art center. We first made a painting over bubble wrap, creating an abstract collaborative artwork.  Next, we used the painting to make prints.  We pressed individual pieces of paper over the painting, and lifted the transfer.  We made so many prints that we covered the entire back fence!

Congratulations to Arthur on his first kid-spelling!  He has started to hear letter sounds and share the sounds he hears in different words, like noticing the “R” sound in different friends names.  We tried sounding out words in his journal and he was able to write his first “kid spelled” word at journal time, “garden”.  Arthur went on to spell many more words since he was so excited about his new skill!  He chose to write the words “Classroom, Sea, Mommy, Cece, Love, Playground and Lemonade”.

Good Afternoon!

We kicked off our week by diving into what we did over the weekend, specifically where we went. Friends thought for a moment and shared where in the community they had went. Several children shared that they went to gymnastics—popular weekend activity! Throughout the week, we’ll discuss places in our community as well as specific places in our classroom!

Later on in PREK1 group, we talked about the grocery store while reading a few pages from Here and There. First, we talked about the grocery store as we know it as well as the kinds of grocery stores we have. Then, we started reading Here and There, where we found out that in Indonesia, they have ‘floating markets’ on rivers where people sell goods—how fun! Kids were all about that, stating, “I want to go there!”.

IMG_7867IMG_7865

This morning we invited kids to use their imaginations to create cooperative imaginative play using “loose parts materials”.  They used boxes, blankets and recycled materials of different shapes.  What manifested in the group was a make believe “donut delivery shop”.  Cardboard rolls cut into pieces became the donuts which were packed in boxes for sale.  Small cardboard rectangles became phones used to order and receive calls from customers.  The large boxes were the homes of customers who order donuts.  Several friends worked to package donuts and deliver them while others ordered from “home”. There was a moment where the donut shop became overwhelmed with calls and we had to create an “on hold system” so orders could be placed one at a time.  Katherine later decided she wanted to grow her store into an “everything store” where a customer could order anything they wanted…maybe her version of the original Amazon book store…but with donuts Winking smile.

The space under the tree was busy this morning as the art table and water table were at maximum capacity our entire time outside! We love having multiple spaces to utilize water when it’s warm out.

PREK2: At lunch today we got to try asparagus!  Arthur, who had been interested brought some in and we sautéed and mixed it into the pasta.  He was so excited to try it even though he said he had tried it the night before and hand not enjoyed the flavor :).  We made a class chart at group time deciding whether we liked or did not like the asparagus.  Hannah shared that she” kind of liked the asparagus but also kind of did not like it”, so we decided she should place her name on the line between the columns.

Happy Friday and last day of May.

This morning we went into the kitchen to engage with playdough.  Golf tees were added to our tools.  While a friend was adding their golf tees, they imagined they were candles and sang the Happy Birthday song.  We were also busy making designs with our pizza cutter, making the mold of our plastic egg half, cutting out shapes with our cookie cutters and rolling it between our hands to make snakes.

Happy Friday!

This week, we have had a lot of interest in “Rolly-Polly” bugs in the garden.  Friends have spent much of our outdoor time looking for them, making habitats for them in bug jars and asking questions about them.  Today we decided to bring some inside and create a rolly-polly habitat in the science area.  Friends helped to collect sticks mulch and leaves to put inside.  We added some “Wee Sprouts” to the habitat for the rolly- polly bugs to eat.  We learned that they eat vegetables.  We also noticed that rolly pollys have more than six legs.  We learned that rolly- polly bugs are not insects but belong to a group of creatures called isopods.  Lots of life science this week!

IMG_2627IMG_2629IMG_2633IMG_2636

Friends explored loose parts at the round table this morning.  Our play evolved with the kids.  As the kids built tunnels to roll puff balls down, there was an issue with the pipes slipping.  We problem solved, trying several ideas and landed on some silicone pieces being the best way to secure the tunnels.  Problem solving with kids gives offers a great opportunity for their own critical thinking and problem solving skills to grow.

Good Afternoon!

A friend asked for “marching sticks” this morning, so we brought out the rhythm sticks to march with in the front. We tapped our sticks together or tapped them on the floor as we marched.

IMG_5855(3)IMG_5860(4)IMG_5859(4)IMG_5857(3)IMG_5864(4)

Our friends made their way to the kitchen to paint at the easel. Two friends came in a time so we practiced waiting for our turn patiently. We painted with 6 different colors with 3 different brush sizes: small round, medium round and large flat. We identified the colors we were painting. A friend summed up our activity by saying “the paintings are so beautiful!.”

IMG_5866(4)IMG_5867(3)IMG_5886(4)IMG_5887(3)IMG_5896(4)IMG_5894(3)

While our friends waited for their turn to paint, Miss Bekah set out several different activities for our friends to engage with. We had waffle blocks out to build with, object permanence boxes to explore and dress-up bear puzzle for friends to complete.

Good Afternoon!

Four kids in our PREK1 group went to the farm this morning! It was a slow moving trip which allowed us to take our time in nature, moving whichever way the wind blew us (no pun intended!).

We stopped by the barn where we said hi to all of the animals. Ryan quickly noticed that the chickens had laid a few eggs! As we headed back towards the marsh area, we stopped at the pond where we played a game the kids called, ‘Float or sink’. They gathered a few nature items, mainly sticks and grass, and worked together to guess if items would sink or float in the pond.

We visited our favorite swing where Ryan and Paige worked at pushing one another on the rope swing. This requires a ton of strength, coordination, and balance! We ended our trip by having a quick snack before we visited the ‘lookout’ for a bit. Instantly, we saw several different birds flying throughout the marsh.

One of the things we value most at Wee Friends is our outside time. We try our best to bring our indoor environment, outside. Meaning, we paint, create, build, dig, and explore outside, along with a very loose daily schedule where we can punt and spend majority of our day outside!

I’ve attached an article about the huge benefits of outside time on kids mental health. I loved the ideas the author shared of quality outdoor activities along with activities if you’re short on space! Kids have such a wide imagination that they really just need the space and the materials and they’re off!

In the classroom, we offered a tadpole observation and painting station.  Our tadpoles have started to grow small back legs, so we spent time looking at how they changed.  Some friends wondered why they had the two back legs but no front legs.  We talked about how the tadpole changes slowly, developing one area at a time.   As we observed and painted, some friends began to notice other living things inside the jar.  There was a snail and, the favorite,  a dragonfly nymph!  We got to talk about metamorphosis in other kids of creatures like the dragonfly.

IMG_2407IMG_2409IMG_2447IMG_2442IMG_2411IMG_2415

PREK2:  Outside, several friends were on the hunt for pill bugs.  They looked under logs, in the garden and around bushes.  Some made homes for the bugs inside jars and watched them during our outdoor time.  Some even named them.  At group we read “A Pill Bug’s Life” and counted pill bugs on the board in response to the outdoor interest.

Happy Wednesday!

This morning while we were looking out the reading step window, we noticed a big, stuffed teddy bear sitting on the neighbor’s bench.  Seeing that led us to wanting to grab our stuffed bears/animals to engage with in our play and go on a bear hunt.

IMG_5790(3)IMG_5793(4)IMG_5796(3)IMG_5797(4)

We then headed into the kitchen to engage with some bear sorters and our wooden shape loose parts.  The friends were holding up the different colors of the bears to identify and also putting them onto their wood shape pieces.  Cece even joined us in sitting at the table exploring the bears on her tray.

IMG_5800(4)IMG_5809(4)IMG_5803(4)IMG_5814(3)IMG_5813(2)IMG_5818(4)

Some of us then headed out to engage with driving the wooden cars on the floor or wooden ramps, or listening to Miss Bekah read books, or looking at one independently from the reading step shelf.

IMG_5822(4)IMG_5820(4)IMG_5826(2)

We then headed out to get some fresh air outside before the rain came.  Cece engaged with her basket of toys, Eleanor peeked over from inside the climbing house, Clark engaged with the dinosaurs in the sandbox, Charlotte worked on climbing to the top of the house, a friend interacted with Cece on her blanket and several friends engaged with the sea animals and sea shells at the table.
