WF Visits Good Shepherd Montessori School for a Music Performance 10/3/14

068Today was an exciting day for our older preschoolers…We visited a really BIG kid FullSizeRenderschool!  We went to GSMS for a music presentation from Mrs. Oyer’s Orff students.   GSMS is only about 2 miles away from Wee Friends, located on the corner of Jefferson and Eddy streets in downtown South Bend.  I was excited to bring our Wee Frienders to GSMS because:

1. Our kids were able to see the next stage of learning: elementary school!

2. The Orff presentations are very, very cool.  Our kids were active participants in the Orff show with singing along and creative movement.  They all stayed very engaged in the process from start to finish!

3. We saw several of our WF alum in classrooms or while walking through the school.074076075

4. I love GSMS as it was my daughter’s school for 1st-8th grade and my son currently is a 6th grader.  Ya’ll know if I catch your ear for a few minutes, I will give a strong testimonial that GSMS would be a great place to consider for 1st grade!  I always fully disclose that I am biased because GSMS fits my education philosophy so well.

In a recent email with a GSMS administrator, she shared, “We are always eager to have children from Wee Friends come to GSMS after completing their time with you because they are well-prepared, cooperative, curious, eager to learn, and peaceful. Thank you!”

Good Shepherd continues your child on the path that we start in their Early Childhood/Kindergarten years with us:

  • to sustain a LOVE of learning
  • to continue to have ownership of their education
  • to be known for the gifts they offer to the world
  • to have continuity through 3 year classroom cycles that allow them to experience being the younger child (who learn from the oldest) and work their way to the top to be the older child (who teach the youngest)
  • to learn social emotional skills that encourage problem solving for the community
  • to be allowed to develop at their own pace in leaps and bounds rather than adhere to a “one size fits all”  linear curriculum

5.  This is also a great opportunity to share that GSMS is having an open house this Sunday from 2:00-4:00.  My daughter Kaitlyn (currently in the  Adams High School IB Program) will be giving tours! If you would like me to give you a personal tour of GSMS, just let me know when you will be there and I’ll be happy to meet you there.

On another note…I heard from one of our families that there is a grassroots movement for WF to offer a kindergarten option for a larger set of our current kids for fall 2015.  I would like to schedule a Parent’s Meeting at a local coffeehouse  on a Wednesday morning (say 8:15ish?) in early November for any families that would like to participate in a conversation about what it could/should look like to extend your time here at WF.  PLEASE CONTACT ME IF THIS A MEETING YOU WOULD WANT TO ATTEND, BUT A WEDNESDAY MORNING COULD NOT WORK FOR YOU.

After the music presentation, Mrs. Driscoll toured our group through the school where we visited the 1st-3rd grade (Lower El) classroom.   We saw some familiar WF faces! We also talked about some of the big kid math works, we saw beautiful art, we saw the new chicken coop, we watched GSMS children gardening in the rain, and then we visited Ms. Woody in the lunchroom where she shared her home-made granola with us!

When we returned to WF we found Mel working with our younger friends with our big wooden blocks and rhythm sticks.  The funny part is that she did NOT know what Orff was and it was truly a coincidence that they were doing the same music work that we were visiting.  Ha!  It was a perfect transition back to WF though.

While playing grocery this morning, Saskia let us know that she was off to Whole Foods! Good choice! Smile

We got out the trampoline again and a few of our friends took full advantage of the opportunity! We love to jump and get some energy out.

Nahla went around the rock area and collected different rocks in her bin. Lucy, Maya, and Nahla started to dig holes in the rocks using multiple sticks that they found.

WF Thursday 10/2 Pincer Play

Dear Wee Families,

004

It was a great day for grasping. Markers, puzzle pieces, corn husks and kernels, QTips, donkey saddles, game chips and stickers and blocks. It’s like a workout for the finger muscles. The Wee fingers are getting ready to write, letters and one day…..letters!

Love,

Your Wee Teachers.

WF 10/1/14 Picking our way through the farm!

PLEASE NOTE: We are tentatively planning on taking Group A (the older kids) to the Apple Orchard next Wednesday, Oct 8th.  I’ll keep you posted as the forecast comes out and the plans develop.

We could not have had a better fall day to begin October and to explore the farm.  Today we picked…and picked….and picked up.  We brought back to WF a wonderful assortment of nature (corn, pine cones, pine branches, flowers, seed pods and so on).  The children also found at least a dozen small frogs which they found challenging to pick up and to keep ahold of!  Same story with the grasshopper.  101

It was a beautiful morning of exploration and learning.

Good Afternoon!

Hope everyone is enjoying the last day of September!

It was a kitchen and baby doll kind of morning. Saskia propped her baby doll up in her high chair where she proceeded to feed her baby food. Rosemary took a spoon and stirred her food in her bowl. Friends use procedures and techniques that they see in the real world and use it in their play. Children are always observing their surroundings.

IMG_0143IMG_0147

We sure did have to bundle up this morning as we headed outside. Friends kept commenting on how cold the sand was!

IMG_0155IMG_0163

The sun finally started to peak out. Lucy and Maya walked around the yard to look at the different flowers. They really seemed to like the purple flowers that line the fence.

IMG_0164IMG_0176

Tate laid on the floor and talked to Anna after lunch time. She sure thought it was funny Smile. It’s amazing to see how the multi-age grouping plays out on a day to day basis. Our older friends love taking care of our little ones.

For breakfast, children had chex and apples. Lunch consisted of hummus on tortillas, strawberries, and broccoli. PM snack was string cheese and whole wheat bunny crackers.

Have a great night!

WF Tuesday 9/30

*Farm Group A will be heading to the farm tomorrow!

Weekly FABS:

LITERACY:  K.3.3 Identify characters, settings and important events in a story. K.3.4 Identify favorite books and stories. MATH: K.2.1 Model addition by joining sets of objects. K.2.3 Describe addition situations.

It’s a favorite FAB week as what is described above is naturally present in each and every day at Wee Friends. All it takes is recognizing the opportunity to have a conversation and the learning moments define themselves.

And so it was as friends added blocks and trios higher and higher.

Books were read and questions asked “Who is this story about?” “What is happening in this picture?” “Where is the yellow 016star?”

018

When dancing began in housekeeping, friends were invited to go to the music rug and dance to music. “Did you know SONGS have characters Even songs without words! This song is soft and gentle-what do you think the character might be?”

027

“Look! I can fly!”

“Would anyone else like to fly?”

And so it goes. Hope your day is off and flying! –Laurie

Wee Sprouts: Green bell peppers. Breakfast: Raisin Bran and bananas. Lunch: whole wheat hummus tortillas, fresh strawberries, fresh green beans Snack: Fresh raspberries, fresh pomegranate, and string cheese.

Happy Monday!

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

**We are in need of plastic grocery bags so if anyone has any extra at home, we’d greatly appreciate it Smile.

Today, we had a student from IUSB come and observe our class. Victoria will be here for the next ten weeks every Monday morning for a few hours. We’re excited to get to know her and for her to see how the Wee Wee world works.

For breakfast, children had English muffins with cream cheese and apples. Lunch consisted of whole wheat pasta with shredded beef, unsweetened applesauce, and peas. PM snack was cheddar cheese slices with raisins.

Have a terrific night!
