WF Monday 9/22 MORE THAN/LESS THAN

030

Happy Monday!

The Blue Bus and the beloved ‘end of class stampers’ kicked the morning into high gear!

When everyone re-gathered, Sloane created and invited all the Wee Friends to a birthday party. A teacher (me) saw the numbers on the cake and jumped at the chance to integrate one of this week’s MATH FABS: Find the number that is one more than or one less than any whole number. “We don’t want to do that.” responded MORE THAN one friend.

And with great exuberance, friends continued their own imaginative play. We settled in and listened to one another. We supported friends, redirected here and there and let the morning flow.

It was MORE THAN enough.  Hope your day is nothing LESS THAN peaceful. –Laurie

WF Thursday 9/18

029

For the last two Wednesdays, the WF/WFF staff has been attending a professional development sponsored by the Early Childhood Association in Fort Wayne. The sessions focus on Positive Discipline for all ages. Among the many great ideas that have been shared is the reminder that sitting with our Wee Friends, listening and guiding their explorations is key to cultivating a true love of learning.

One of these moments began yesterday with a spark of an idea when two friends experimented with the translucent and colored clipboards. Jessica watched friends explore these colors through the sun’s rays  pouring through the window. Today she invited friends to further explore color combinations by teaching them about a color wheel using primary colors.

Later, in support of Literacy FABS K.1.20: (Identify and sort common words in basic categories) and K.7.3: (Describe people, places, things, locations and actions) friends gathered around the table and listened to clues about objects hidden away in Jessica’s hand!

WF Wednesday 9/17 To Pick or Not to Pick

139

There are many opportunities in an early childhood classroom to investigate: To Pick or Not to Pick. It is a valid and important question because there are so many things to pick: nosey snacks, flowers, boxwood leaves, green beans, scabies and the list goes on.

Well, today, on the Prairie, we picked with abandon. We picked with purpose and  pleasure. We picked to understand and to process. We spread seeds not boogie germs. We spread knowledge and inquiry and not necessarily effluvia.

Pick away Wee Peeps! The prairie is your oyster.

Wee Sprouts: Sweet bell peppers. Breakfast: Rice cakes with peanut butter and PPC peaches. Lunch: Brown rice with lentils, PPC green beans and bananas. Snack: Crackers and hummus.

Good Afternoon!

Just to start you’re afternoon off right…

It was a beautiful morning outside. With a little nip in the air, we headed outside where our main focus was on the sandbox and rock area.

Lucy loved getting hugs from Elliot once he got back from swimming.

Since the air was a little cold, the sand was pretty cold. We loved filling buckets up with sand using shovels.

Rosemary and Tate read books as the others slept. Rosemary loves to empty out the shelve and have her pick from the books!

Milestone of the day: Rosemary made it up the habitrail! She’s still learning how to navigate the stairs and her way around the habitrail but she loved it!

For breakfast, children had toast with butter and cinnamon along with apples. Lunch consisted of hummus on tortillas, pears, and peppers. PM snack was cheddar cheese and animal crackers.

Have a great night!

WF Tuesday 9/16 SWIM!

027

Enjoy the swimming pix! Mel was able to sneak in and take some pictures of your swimmers!

Back in the classroom, we explored a different kind of water play. The conversation began yesterday when Hazel sang the Braham’s Lullaby in Icelandic. Today, we asked Hazel to sing it again and as she did, we investigated big black tubs of ice cubes. We added blue water color and eventually bubbles and farm/aquatic animals. When Jessica described a coral reef, we added Floam (and a fabulous illustration from our library). We found Iceland on our globe and discussed other cold and icy places on the earth.

Tuesday. Wee celebrations of the glorious gifts of water.

Have a peaceful day. – Laurie

Wee Sprouts: PPC Cherry tomatoes. Breakfast: Cheerios and bananas. Lunch: Whole wheat tortillas with hummus, apple slices and orange and green Bell peppers. Snack: Mozzarella cheese sticks and blueberries.

WF Monday 9/15 To Scream or Not to Scream

045

We take expressing ourselves very seriously at Wee Friends. So when the screaming begins, we pause and ask ourselves: “To scream or not to scream?”. We know it feels good to let our bodies scream. High pitched soaring sound, straight from the depths of the Wee spirits. And yet, it is an alarming sound, too. It creates inner ear ouchies for friends and teachers. “How can it hurt your ear?” asked Aislinn to a hurt Melinda.  Hmmmmm. We don’t have the answer on this one. We watch for safety, kind words and…..expressive emotion. Today it worked for a while. Then we encouraged a change in direction. And so it goes. Day by day.

002

Wee Sprouts: Carrots. Breakfast: Whole wheat bagels with cream cheese and apple slices. Lunch: Pasta with marinara, peas and pear slices. Snack: Yogurt and a fruit TBA after PPC delivery.
