Good Afternoon!
This morning for our PREK1 sign in, children came up to the board where they were asked to identify the coin worth 25 cents, just like the book we read yesterday in group. Children wrote their name under the quarter and a few friends even went as far to identify the other coin, a penny, that is worth one cent!
Social Studies: K.4.1 Explain that people work to earn money to buy the things they want. Introduce money names and values.
We had a busy day with so many child driven ideas for experiments! While sitting in the sandbox yesterday, an older friend came up with the idea to use the cornstarch and water mixture, but to try adding sand to see what would happen. He hypothesized that the sand would make the mixture more “stiff”. He, and other interested kids, tried mixing different amounts of each ingredient to see how the mixture was affected.
Since we had sand in the classroom, we also decided to add it to the art center. Kids tried mixing the sand into paint to see how it would change their paintings.
Another friend asked to try using the paint/salt mixture to make paintings at the art center. After talking a bit, we decided it might be interesting to try different papers. We tried water color paper, card stock and printer paper to see if the paper affected the outcome of the paintings.
Back in habitrail, a group of children participated in some ‘rough and tumble’ play. We always allow “wrestling” to happen in habitrail as long as there is a teacher present. We also go through rules that we have when engaging in this kind of play such as listening to friends words when they say “stop”. This type of play is important not only for gross motor development but understanding and exploring play that is safe and unsafe. Even though this group was made up of some of our youngest peers in the class, they were able to toe the line and make sure they stayed safe as well as their friends. By the end, friends were out of breath and needed a little breather by just laying on the floor and taking a break
. We always try to allow our environment to be a space where we say “yes”, especially when it’s what children”’s bodies need!
