Good afternoon!

Today we brain-stormed as a group to decide what to add to the Tuff Tray.  We came up with water and pipes.  Next, we worked as a team to create an interesting water system.  We talked specifically about the “valve/switch” pieces which could open or close off water ways.  Some of our older friends noticed that if we added a closed valve to the beginning of the pipe system, the water would fill up and spill into the next pipe, flowing in a different direction.  One friend  was able to predict where the water would pour out, and tell friends to collect it from various locations.  This takes a lot of ability to visualize a system and how water will move through it!  Hands-on projects like these that are driven by kids interests/ideas build creative problem solving, cooperative problem solving, language/communications skills, imagination/visualization and an emerging understanding of applied physics, all through play.

In the art center, another friend planned a project.  She wanted to make a wind chime.  She was able to imagine what she wanted to make and visualize what materials she would need to put it together.  She also showed off her developing higher thinking skills, and ability to plan/communicate complex ideas.  Next, she was able to carry out her project all by herself.  This is what we want to see as kids move through our child driven curriculum,  complex thinking, independence and confidence to bring ideas to fruition.
